In 1977, the nightclub Warehouse in Chicago became the birthplace of EDM and house music in America. House music was created by black and gay DJs. European electro music was imported, creating underground dance scenes in cities like Detroit, New York, and Chicago. These scenes, known as raves, were held illegally in abandoned areas. EDM grew in popularity in the 90s among young people. In the early 2000s, the term EDM encompassed all sub-genres of electronic music. Music festivals dedicated to EDM started appearing in the US in 2010. By 2015, well-known artists like The Chainsmokers and Calvin Harris were part of the EDM scene. In 2023, the American EDM scene is vibrant and diverse, with festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival and Electric Forest drawing large crowds. Denver has one of the largest EDM communities in the US. Fast forward to 1977 in Chicago, where the nightclub Warehouse, also referred to as the House, emerged as the birthplace of EDM and its sub-genre, house music, in America. The sub-genre house music was invented by black and primarily gay DJs in Chicago. As house music began to take over the club scene, more European electro music was imported from different countries overseas and created the underground dance scenes in urban areas like Detroit, New York, and Chicago. These underground dance scenes, also known as raves, were illegally held in abandoned urban areas. This was a result of EDM's rapidly growing popularity among young people in the 90s. In the early 2000s, the term EDM came into play and encompassed all of the many sub-genres of electronic music. Popping became the term people used when talking about attending EDM music festivals or events. By 2010, music festivals solely dedicated to EDM started popping up in the United States. Around 2015, the EDM scene consisted of artists which I'm sure most of you are familiar with. Artists like The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris, and Tiesto. Now, in 2023, the EDM scene in America is as vibrant and diverse as ever. Festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas and Electric Forest in Michigan draw massive crowds every year, showcasing a wide variety of EDM sub-genres. Beyond the massive festivals held throughout America, many major cities have thriving EDM scenes. Denver actually has one of the largest EDM communities in the U.S. and is known as the base capital of the world.
