The podcast discusses how technology can benefit cities, focusing on smart cities. It explores the ways technology helps cities become bigger and more organized, such as saving important documents and data. It also discusses how technology improves daily lives, manages distribution, reduces waste, and addresses climate change. Technology enables citizen participation, better communication, and reporting of issues to the government. However, there are downsides to consider, including data privacy, cybersecurity, and the digital divide. Ethical implications, such as surveillance and misuse of data, are also discussed. Welcome to our podcast. Today we will talk about technology affecting society. We are going to focus on how technology can help cities. My name is Adem Bouzereri and I am going to try and help you understand how technology will help cities. I have been studying this subject for 10 years in my free time. Hello, my name is Yigit Faiz and I will be your second host of this podcast. I also studied this subject for 7 years, 4 of them in Harvard University. My goal is to help you get the right information about our subject so you can become an expert at it and that you will understand it clearly. The question that we will be focusing on is how does technology help smart cities become bigger. To support our argument we will be having some interviews throughout the podcast. We might also do a survey to start a point that we have. We will look at some professional opinions from scientists. We will look at the opinion of people like Carlo Ratti who is a famous scientist about that subject. We will first talk about how cities were before AI, how people lived, how things were done in the morning. We will talk about key events in history that if it was here what could have happened. If technology was here what could have happened. It is good to see the difference between a city that does not have a lot of technology compared to one that has a lot. It will help us see the differences. Understanding the differences will really help us understand how technology can help in a lot of things. Also this will help us as the podcast goes on. First we will be looking at things technology did that helped smart cities get more organized. One example is that technology helped save important documents and data. Because in a city with almost no technology documents could be easily lost. In this part we will take a survey and see if people think that technology is helpful for cities or not. 10 people will participate in it. We will also explain about how technology could help people's daily lives. An example is this famous app Grovo which we can use to order food. Technology is a powerful tool to let people happy in the city where they live in. It helps people get comfortable. Technology could also help people's daily lives in a positive way. Technology helps cities grow efficiently and sustainably. And there is many factors for that. One example is that it helps manage distribution and helps reduce waste. This helps cities in an economic way. Technology in cities could help with climate change. There are many factors due to that. One example is electric cars. It doesn't pollute the air and it's a more efficient way of traveling. It helps reduce the speed of climate change. Another important factor is that technology helps citizens participate. Technology allows better communication between people, residents and more. Apps and stuff like that allow citizens to report issues. And those issues message go to directly, for example, the mayor of that city. This could solve many issues and help people stay happy and comfortable where they live in. This involvement puts pressure on the government to respect the needs of citizens. This is one of the benefits of citizen participation. Technology advancements will put up the expectations of living situations. People will expect more from a government to use this technology from one who doesn't. People will ask for immediate things, for example, like a door that opens by itself. But this will help because it will make a city a better place to live in and attract more people to come. For example, smart cities initiatives are gaining popularity across the globe. For example, these initiatives use data and technology to create more efficient urban areas. We will dive into key strategies of successful smart cities. Cities like Barcelona have implemented advanced technology to improve urban living. In Singapore, for instance, smart traffic management systems have significantly reduced congestion because real-time data collection and analysis help manage traffic flow. Barcelona has implemented smart lighting to save energy and reduce costs. Sensors adjust lighting based on activity and time of day. Another important aspect of the use of Internet of Things in urban planning. Because Internet of Things devices collect data to optimize city services like waste management and water supply. Technology also plays a crucial role in enhancing public safety. Surveillance systems like cameras and emergency response technology help keep citizens safe. In addition, predictive policing uses data analysis to prevent crime. This can lead to a more efficient use of police resources and safer communities. Technology can improve healthcare services in cities. Telemedicine and health monitoring apps provide better access to healthcare. As we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, technology was vital in managing public health. Contact tracing apps and remote working solutions helped control the spread of the virus. Education is another factor where technology has a significant impact on. Year-learning platforms and digital classrooms make education more accessible to people. Cities with strong technological infrastructure can adapt more easily to changes. This adaptability is crucial for resilience in the face of challenges like pandemics or natural disasters. We will also explore the potential downsides of technology in urban areas. Issues like data privacy and cybersecurity need to be addressed. For instance, smart city technologies can be vulnerable to hacking. Ensuring robust cybersecurity measures is essential for protecting sensitive data. There is also the risk of widening the digital divide. Not everyone has equal access to technology, which can aggravate social inequalities. It's important to consider the ethical implications of technology in cities. This includes issues like surveillance and potential mis-issue of data.
