Aaron Hemmer, a freshman at the University of Missouri, discusses how his views on advertising in the media have evolved. He finds advertising to be an interesting and memorable topic that is constantly present in our lives. He believes that advertising has the largest impact on society. Danny Morris, who shares similar views, explains that advertising is important for companies to promote their products and increase sales. Both Aaron and Danny agree that advertising is everywhere and has become a part of everyday life. They believe that advertising will continue to be a crucial aspect of business. Hello, my name is Aaron Hemmer and I am a freshman here at the University of Missouri. Today I'm going to revisit my media assessment inventory and talk about how my thinking on advertising in the media has changed. I'm also going to speak with Danny Morris about his general knowledge of advertising in the media and how about I may or may not agree with their opinions about the material following my enrollment in Communications 2100. In my opinion, advertising was the most interesting and memorable topic that we talked about this semester. I remember specifically from lab we were split into groups and asked to discuss different questions. Usually when we do this only one person is talking from each group, but for this activity everyone was talking and introducing their own ideas on the topic. That's why I loved this idea. Advertising is something that is always going on around us 24-7, whether it is someone wearing a sports team's logo on their shirt or seeing two golden arches representing McDonald's. Here's what I thought about advertising in an industry at the start of the semester. Which of the following affects society in the largest manner today? Media economics slash practices, advertising as an industry, public relations as an industry, or media legislation slash regulation? I would say advertising in an industry because advertising is how they're able to attract all of the users on their app and that goes back to the last example that we used in why I think social media is the worst. My view on advertising hasn't changed much in terms of me believing that advertising affects society the most as an industry. Like I previously mentioned, advertising is all around us all of the time. The marketers know this as well. They purposely show us things that you will remember and then show it to you as many times as possible. For example, take Geico. Everyone knows Geico by their little green gecko that's in every one of their television commercials and also on almost every billboard. They have been able to spread their company all over the world by doing this type of advertising. I am here with Danny Morris. Today I wanted to talk to you about advertising in the media. Can you tell me what you think advertising means and why companies use it? I think advertising is just promoting or spreading a message about your company or product in different ways. Yeah, I would agree with you on that. Why do you think advertising is important? Obviously, as a company, your goal is to have high sales and you want to sell products and you do that by getting more and more people to believe in your product and eventually spend money on it. Definitely. So how does advertising affect society as a whole? I mean, advertising is everywhere you look. It's on every street corner, every building and it's kind of hard to go a day without seeing anything being advertised and I think it's just become part of everyday life now. Danny, thank you for stopping by and telling us what you think about advertising in the media. Thanks for having me. I would say that Danny and I have very similar views on advertising in the media. We both know that it is everywhere around us all of the time. Like he said, it is on every street corner and everywhere you look. Overall, I would say that advertising has been here forever and is going to stay here forever. If companies did not use advertising, then many people would never even know that their company existed. Advertising in the media is a good and effective way for a business to get their name out there and it will stay this way forever and ever.
