Ettill is a bilingual programme here on Conamara Community Radio, with a special emphasis on the Irish language, on poetry, on song, and on the landscape, history and culture of Conamara. In this programme three, Seán o Coisteale continues his beautiful discussions around the Agallabh Beartse, or the Dialogue Poem, or the Two-Hander as Brendan Flynn called it, the Two-Hander, Rathdraí agus an Sbidéal. An Agallabh Beartse is essentially a conversation in rhyme between two people, and usually one with a lot of sawdu, as they say in Irish, a lot of humour, and a little bit of competition between the two people involved. This Agallabh Beartse was written by Johnny Holbeich o Coisteale. And the situation, to recap for all of us, is a Fille, a modern-day Fille, or poet, unnamed in this case, is on his way to a Scáil Éigse, or perhaps the Eireachtas. He's on his way to the Eireachtas, or Scáil Éigse, and he stops at the grave of Rathdraí, Anthona, or Rathdraí. His grave is in Crachwil, there in South Galway. And there he has a dialogue with the poet Rathdraí, and this covers a lot of subject matter. You have poetry, literature, drink, fame, competitions, and many other things in this wonderful dialogue. We're going to look at this dialogue with the poet. We're in Dublin. We're in Loughborn now, and I'd like to say a few more things about this poem, because there's a lot, a lot of poetry, and a lot of stories about the poet. This is the poem itself, and a quote from the poet. This is the dialogue between the poet Rathdraí and the poet. It's an irregular verb. Peicim, I see. Peicim, I saw. I did see. Peicim, I will see. Now it's not going to be a very literary translation, it's a huge challenge to try and translate the beautiful rhythmic rhyming verses of Johnny Hovewijk into English but we will bring you a useful practical translation where at least you'll understand most of the words but it's only a shadow of the original Irish language version.
