The activation synthesis hypothesis suggests that dreams are just electrical impulses without any inherent meaning. According to this theory, people piece together elements of their dreams into a story after waking up to make sense of them. Our need to understand the world around us drives us to create stories out of our dreams. Now that we understand what a dream is and where it comes from, it's important to finally figure out what we do with them. One of the larger theories in neurobiology is the activation synthesis hypothesis. This theory suggests that dreams don't actually have any inherent meaning and that they are just electrical impulses, as previously stated. Now this theory most prominently proposes that people piece together each element of a dream into a story only after we wake up to make sense of it. Now why? This drives me to my next point. Our burning need to understand the world around is what drives us to create stories out of dreams.
