Julaine Milkus and William Kearns discuss their love for Magic: The Gathering. Julaine got into the game after his friend introduced him to it, while William joined a Magic club at school. They talk about their favorite formats, decks, and cards, including Pioneer, Questing Beast, and Old Nauvon. They enjoy the variety of the game and the different types of players it attracts. They also appreciate the funny interactions and inside jokes that come from playing Magic. The episode is from the podcast Turn One Drops. Greetings fellow aristocrats, blue control players, and red skull slingers. My name is Julaine Milkus and I'm your host. With me is William Kearns, one of my best friends. Hello, I'm William Kearns. Today we'll be talking about some of the things we love about this game. Right off the bat is the question I have to ask, what got you into magic? So I had a friend in preschool, I'm pretty sure his name was like Eli, and he really liked Pokemon and we would play Pokemon together over the pandemic. And one day I asked him if he wanted to play Pokemon with me and he was like, nah, I got this new game, it's called like Magic the something, Magic the Gathering, I think. And I was like, whoa, that's so cool. So I went out and bought a deck and that's how I got into it. That's awesome. What got you into magic? On my sixth grade year, when I decided I would be going to Sussex school, my dad had this friend named Nick who got me a bunch of these like starter kit decks and promised to teach me, but we moved from Colorado before he got a chance. So my mom asked me, oh, Magic the Gathering club at school, do you want to do it? And I said, yes, maybe somebody will teach me. And I remember quite clearly walking in there and then getting crushed in magic my first time by William. Yeah. I'm pretty sure you were playing the white tokens deck kind of thing. Yeah. Basri's Lieutenant, I think. Yeah. And I was playing some mono green stompy. Yeah. Moving on to our favorite formats, cards and Dexeon. I know there's so many to choose from. Do you have any opinions? My favorite format, I'm going to be honest, is probably Pioneer. It's a non-rotating format, which means you don't have to buy a new deck every six or seven months. They did put a pause on the rotation of the standard this year, but I just like being able to have a deck that was made many years ago and I can still play it because then that's a similar power level to some of my friends decks. Do you have a favorite card? Oh, that's a good question. My favorite color is absolutely green and I really love Questing Beast. That card is just super cool, but my favorite card other than Questing Beast is probably Old Nauvon. It's a, I think, five and a green green for a seven seven dragon. It says whenever a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, create that many treasure tokens. Yeah, that card is sick. So super expensive. I got it for my birthday when I first started playing Magic. It was super fun to surprise my dad with it in his deck. Yeah, I love playing Commander just because making decks for that format is so easy and having that super powerful card out every single game is really fun for me. My favorite Magic card is probably Raffine Scheming Seer from the Set of Streets of New Cabana. I just like, I just love the idea of the Obscura Crime Family. My favorite deck to play is probably my Teysa Karlov Orzhov Aristocrats deck just because it flourishes in the chaos of a four-player game. What with so many creatures blocking, attacking, and dying. Now that we've talked about her face, what moves you about Magic? What, what do you like about it? One of my favorite things about Magic the Gathering is how it can be really anything. There's so many different cards. In fact, I think there's over, well over 2,000 cards in the game. Wow. So, there's so many different combinations of decks and there's so many different types of players. Like, I walk into some game stores and I'll sit down with the game for people and they'll bring out their crazy, like, wacky, silly deck where they, like, their goal is to win with some, like, really weird card and it's just really fun or there's other people that are really serious and they want to win and that come out with their, like, CDH commanders. They make really competitive decks and there's other people that, like, are kind of newer to the game and really don't know or what to do or how to do it. I just really like how everybody can kind of find a place in the game. Yeah, I actually really love the funny interactions and jokes that can come out of Magic games. Like, some of the, uh, I know of Beast Within, a couple of cards that were just, like, the best things to Beast Within because it was so funny thinking about the possible interactions or giving something flying or giving a flying creature an equipment. Definitely, there's a lot of inside jokes that come out of Magic the Gathering and games. Yeah, it seems that we've come to the end of the episode. Don't forget to check us out. You just listened to an episode of Turn One Drops.
