William Commons, a freshman at UNC in Chapel Hill, discusses introspection as a process of self-discovery and personal growth. He emphasizes the importance of actively engaging with oneself to uncover values, aspirations, and areas for improvement. Through discussions with family and learning about other cultures, he has gained self-awareness and a broader perspective. Introspection serves as a compass to navigate college life. Hello, my name is William Commons, and I'm a freshman here at UNC in Chapel Hill. I was born in New Jersey, but I grew up most of my life, at least, here in Chapel Hill. And so the values I'll be discussing today is introspection. To me, introspection is not just about looking inward to understand my thoughts and feelings, but it's kind of the whole process of continuous self-discovery and personal growth, so kind of beyond the dictionary definition. So in college, I've come to see introspection as a tool for navigating the complexities of my life here on campus, through both academics and my personal relationships, and it hasn't just been about analyzing my past experiences, but more actively engaging in a dialogue with myself to uncover my values, my aspirations, and areas for improvement. And this goes beyond the surface-level kind of examination. It's a real commitment to understanding the deeper layers of my identity and how my identity will evolve in response to these new challenges that I face. My unique interpretation kind of comes from this sort of self-awareness that I've gained through sort of my cultural ecology, if you will, so through my family, I want to say, like just having discussions with my parents, my brothers, and just those close to me, I've been able to feel more open and get a better understanding of myself and kind of what I want in life. And then through class also, kind of the same thing, just understanding other people's cultures and their ecologies has helped me broaden my view of the world and kind of take that and internalize it and kind of understand where I want to be, and it's helped me be more introspective. So yeah, in essence, just like introspection for me is an ongoing journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. It's kind of a compass that guides me through college, I guess. Yep, that's all. Thank you for listening.
