After the driver who hit Mauler in his '48 Chevy pulled to the shoulder of Highway 80, he expressed remorse for killing the dog. Hect, appearing out of the Mesquite, claimed the dog was his and pretended sympathy for the tipsy old man, saying to make up for the loss he could give him and Tim a ride up the road, offering to drive the inebriated old timer. As a result, they escaped before the sheriff caught them. They parked next to the railroad tracks as a train roared by, barely missing them.
