Tim and the Midland sheriff drove out to the scene of the shack that he and Hect burned to the ground. An obvious crime scene, the rubble had been sorted into neat stacks for easy identification, but how could it be that the charred remains of a human being had not been uncovered. Then, of all the inappropriate reactions to so horrible a crime scene, the Midland sheriff broke out laughing. At that point, Tim suspected he'd been the victim of a bad joke that went way too far, in his opinion.
