After being shot, Henry ends up at sanitoriums and alcohol treatment facilities. Upon recovery, he attends Texas Tech briefly and goes to Florida where he and a friend run out of money. The trip back to Lubbock is touch and go and both sign up for the draft, but a car wreck spares Henry.
