How you doing? I'm here, man. Did you guys do a soundcheck? Yes, Kyle, we did a soundcheck. Anyway, so welcome to the podcast. You're our very first guest. I feel so special. You should. Kicking it off with a banger with Mr. Gilbert, first episode. Bring me energy. Yes, sir. So really, we have zero agenda for what we want to talk about today. So it's really just like we want to get inside the mind of who is Dan Gilbert. So just like take us through a day in the life of Mr. Gilbert. All right, 5 a.m., it's a wake up and wondering what I'm doing with my life. And then I feed the cat because that's my sole purpose. And then I spent maybe five minutes trying to figure out what bow tie to wear. Big deal. And then I packed my lunch, my little Marvel Comics lunchbox. Yes, the metal can. Now I'm here to teach people how to talk in a different language for seven hours or so. Seven or eight, around there. Nine, ten. All day. And then field hockey. Yes, you are one of the new field hockey coaches. I forgot about that. How much field hockey have we done, Mr. Gilbert? Well, so far it's just with the three and two season right now we're winning, but I haven't played ever. The first time was when preseason started like end of August. Tons of records. Hey, what got you into field hockey? Money. That'll do it. I mean, that's really fair. Don't ask me, it's money. Pascoe came to me at the end of last year, like, hey, do you want to coach field hockey? I said, after school stuff, no way, I'm going home. Meanwhile, I was proposed by Ms. Willis, she said, you know, systems coaches do get paid. In my head, could I have snapped around faster thing? Go on. Please. But it's also just fun to actually do something with you guys, like, in more than just being like, all right, three o'clock, I'm out. Yeah. It's like throw up a deuce and I'm just like leaving. Throw up deuces. Just during the day, you're teaching us how to speak in another language. My incredibly energetic voice. Yes. I think it was the twins, Allison and Lauren, Justin's sister, they were like, we know you're being serious right now because you actually sound like emotion. Like during a practice, I was like, you guys are doing so good. Like, we know you're serious because you actually raise the pitch in your voice. I was like, yeah, I got to dial it back. Too much emotion from Mr. Gilbert. I don't know. I just can't like, I guess it's laid back, but it just sounds so like, yeah, all right, here's what we're doing today. There's the problem of everything sounds sarcastic. We never know when Mr. Gilbert's happy or not. I know. I don't know. It's just that poker face that's right now. You guys have started doing stuff now that I find more funny. Like, first year was just more like, all right, I'm in a new place. Oh, we go to the church. Okay, this is different. All right. And like, like having you, like you were in a homeroom. Yeah, that was freshman year. Like that's wild thing that you guys are going to graduate this year. Now you finished for four years. I know. Like that, that's one thing I kind of wanted to stick around for. I was like, all right, I want to see this class graduate. So, I mean, really, like you came here four years ago. When you first came those four years ago, what, what was that like, like new school? I know you used to do like little kids in high school Spanish. That's a big swing. No, no. It went, I'm in preschool. I worked at academia or not. It's a Latin American community center over on Van Buren street, like a couple minutes down the road as the Spanish teacher. Like I had a co-teacher and she spoke English. Yeah. I spoke Spanish. So conferences were kind of funny where I had to sit in like, oh, like this is neat. And then one of the kids there, his dad was the principal of academia, Antonio Alonso back when he was over near where the Whiteman's they got built over in the area. Yeah. I'm not going to say that. Okay. Fair enough. I was going to try and tell me 141. I appreciate that though. But then he was like, if you ever want to make more money and having to do more of a challenge, because like, all right, I liked the kids because everything was so new. Like we learned about milk and they lost their freaking mind about it. Like making like skeletons or like milk is good for you. I'm like, wow. And then it was kind of like the, it was a lot of different things. There was like the paternalistic kind of stuff, like a lot of crime. Yeah. And I was like, I don't think I'm like, I'm not comfortable. I said, I don't think I could handle this. Yeah. And that was the same thing happened when I taught second grade. I had a co-teacher and she was the, we just switched. I was the English speaker and I taught like English and social studies and she taught math and sciences. And I was at switch off where it seemed like the idea of like, oh, we need more male teachers. But like, I don't know, like I had to stop them because it's like, I feel like there's a certain age where it gets to like a 40 year old man could not be teaching like preschool. I mean, possibly. Yeah, sure. Not to knock if people do, but like, I just know that there's a bit of like, not like a stigma like to like, usually it's like more for women, but it's like, it was, it was fun. I mean, I had worked with a bunch of like moms or like 40 year old women. So when they played on the playground, I was like, I was the go-to to actually try and get these kids tired enough to go like sleep and have time. But yeah, just conducting all the playground games out there. Yeah, he did in fact catch them. But no, it's just like leaping up there. I'm like, put my face against the bars. Like, I'm right here. But no, so like, I learned, I studied for Spanish and like, I wanted to get back to it at some point. It just kind of worked that I went from academia to Odyssey. But like that mix of chart, like the public charter school, it's like, so if anything, I just left there, but I wasn't sure where to go after that. So I just kind of took this because I want to just follow language. They were like, we need a Spanish teacher. I was like, I just want to teach Spanish. Like last year, was it two years ago now? And Testo was here. And he was like, we need to film because they took the lower school kids back downstairs. He was like, we need you to fill two classes. I said, can I learn, can I teach another language? Like, do you know another language? So I'm like, I took a course in French. A singular course. I mean, I don't know. Like, I eat that up. Like, I have books pretty much from most of the major languages in my, in like a bookshelf at my house. And I remember sitting in class, you're sitting there like reading a book, learning Mandarin. I'm like, okay, Mr. Gilbert. Mandarin was a short lived one, I'll give you that much. But I was like, I know there's like, there's like a German book, like in Ms. Park's old room. I was like, this is not going to get thrown away. I'm going to take this with me. Like, heaven forbid. Yeah, another side quest. Yeah. So then I began French. I took my, took a refresh over three months and now we're at level three where I'm just excited that we're doing another language. Yeah, I mean, definitely good to have more languages. Yeah, just to have that. Yeah, like, because I mean, even though it is like the growing language, like variety is all for itself. Yeah, yeah. Like, to have another course that we teach would make good, good name for St. Kitts and all that. French sounds cool too. It's different. It does sound cool, but there's a lot more like pauses and breath and a lot of more like, not R's, but they have more like a back and forth. Like a lot of schwa. Yeah, it's weird. Like there's, no. So yeah, no. So like, what did you like really want to get into teaching like language in the first place? I feel like you guys asked me this question like towards the beginning of like the, like when I first started working, I was like, I don't know. Like I went to school for chemistry. Yeah, I do remember that. Yeah, you know that? No. No. We've been here, we've been here for four years. I know, I was probably absent that day. That one day when I revealed like the tell all about everything I've done before. But no, like I went to chemistry and let me tell you, college level chemistry, you are a face. Oh yeah. Yeah. And you have to like go up like, imagine the V-PAC like maybe three times as far back. Yeah. And you have to walk all the way up to talk to the teacher at the end of class. And be like, I have a question. And they're like, who are you? But then if you talk to them enough, they're going to be like, oh yeah, your name. Yeah. But no, like it's just hard. And I like the idea because I had a really good chemistry teacher, but I was like, this is not my style. I stuck with education. I just changed to bio. Bio also got too hard, but then I had minor things and I kind of forgot about that one. Like at the end, I was like, oh, I'm going to have to put a minor in biology on my degree. Like, cool. But then just Spanish became like, it's just like defaulted. I don't know. Like I was like, all right, this isn't too bad to learn. And then the education part, though, like. Yeah. Yeah. The actual teaching, like there's the whole pedagogy and everything of like learning how to teach. Yeah. Which sounds just interesting in and of itself. But like there's so much theory that goes behind like tests and like analytics. Like multiple choice answers statistically versus open-ended questions versus like short responses versus like essays and everything. Like and all that has to line up to make like a percentage score. Yeah. Like you have to come with that percentage of this is like knowing how well they're going to do. Like it's just. A lot more than just throwing answers, four answers on a page. Yeah, really. Kind of. Kind of thinking more than like, all right, multiple choice. The whole thing is great. Sorry. No. So like last year in our class. Yeah. We saw us physically struggling to do Spanish and then proceed to put these just awful questions on the test. What was the reasoning behind this? Like you said you're talking about like multiple choice. You're going to statistically do better. Well, see, here's the thing. Like the expectation at a level three. Yeah. Is that you can produce thoughts. Yeah. Like there's a whole schema behind like language acquisition where there's three levels, novice, mid, and high. And then within each of those there's a low, intermediate, mid, mid-stage, intermediate between like the intermediate skill level. But each of those is like it becomes a progressive sense like going like I like food too. I love to eat this kind of food. Whereas the higher level is like yesterday we went to this great restaurant. I saw this really different thing I didn't order before. So I wanted to try it. So level three is like middle of the road where it's like I went to this restaurant. It was good. That's it. So that's the kind of stuff I like I knew you guys could do but it's definitely like a big challenge. Yeah. Whereas not for nothing but it is language acquisition is kind of like you don't really I feel like you don't really like it until like the upper levels or like college. Because I came out of this like I honestly when I was in high school I got to Spanish 4. It was four other kids and they all spoke natively the first day. And I remember sitting like five seats like diagonal from them thinking I got to get out of here. So I took physics. But like looking back I'm like you're just a stupid idiot. Like you should have talked through that. Like now I'm like I like learning. Like it's all just a puzzle. Yeah, it is. But yeah, no, the pure interest for you guys like just to show you like this is what you can do. Like you guys like not for nothing but you had the potential to be able to write like yesterday we went to the park and I saw this thing. And when we got to the condition at the end you were being like I would like to do this. Like it's just it's just advancement. And I wanted to see you guys be I wanted you guys to see that you could do this. But I mean, yeah, it was also really hard. So you couldn't see that. You couldn't see like the forest through all the trees about difficult. So I know you guys could do that. I want you to see like this is what you can do. Yeah. So like when you're teaching a class and you obviously our entire class when you see that when you see that light bulb click in all of us. What did that feel like? That's it. That's it. That's it. Like it's the micro. It's like the different scale of like the three year olds who are like, all right, if I like making like weights balance out there like, oh, this is how this works. I'm like, like, that's what I see when you guys are like working out the senses, like the imperfect and the preterite. So I was like, this is what it was like. This is what I wanted. And seeing all you guys figure it out. That was I feel like the couple of times I was like, yeah, that's good. Like when the slight raise in my voice was like, that was my extreme emotion. Like, oh, my God, you guys get it. Let's go. Like that was like, that's what and it doesn't happen all the time. But like, that's the kind of stuff like I love seeing you guys learn. Yeah. Like, even if it is something you're not going to ever remember, like Spanish, like, cool. But like seeing you guys figure stuff out is just like, it's just such a good feeling. Yeah. Like watching you guys do well. Like, I don't know. That's like, that's what it's become now where it's like not just teaching a language or it's like seeing you guys figure this stuff out. Yeah. So that's why I kind of felt like also I did help maybe a little too much because I was like, I want to see you guys get this. But like, I need to help you get to this point because you're kind of missing a couple words. Yeah. And that's, but then having you guys been the year before, I was like looking at it like, this is my fault. Like, I feel like they forget these words. I'm like, I did this to them. I have to make up for this. But no, like when you guys, when it clicks for you guys, that's it. Like, I'm like, this is good. Scores might not have been that, but I was like, in the moment, that's where I'm like, this is what matters. Like you guys getting that sense of like, I got it. Yeah. There was a point where it was like, I actually comprehended like intense Spanish. Yeah. And I was like, I actually know what like people are saying in Spanish outside of like a. I definitely have noticed that. Like I've like. You can pick up words. Yeah. I like people that's talking in Spanish. And I'm like, holy crap. I know what that person just said. Yeah, I know. And I can say this much. We had, we had a meeting with some other teach, some admin people for, I don't know, do we want to say that? Ms. Parks, I'm not hearing you. Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't matter. And I just sit down in some meetings and I remember it was Mr. Jordan coming. He's like, I haven't taken Spanish for like since high school and I still was able to follow along. So like that stuff sticks with you. Yeah. But yeah, no, it's like that kind of stuff where it's like, you can even make like a couple words out of a sentence. You're just like, I know what you're saying about me. Especially when you have like such a fun class like we did last year. My God. I enjoyed, as much as I would be like, guys, please. It was like, you guys made a great class. Like it was fun. Even you, Kyle. Yeah, I'm not going to lie. I look forward to that class every day. I will say that. Okay. Maybe not the workload, but the class. So to be completely transparent, that was one of the things I've worked on with like my goals. But I was like, I wrote down like, I want this to be a class they at least look forward to. And like having you say that, I'm just like. Yeah. This is like the most, this is like peak satisfaction right now. To know that you guys, we saw like, all right, this is a decent class to be in. Yeah. It's not like we just go there and like mess around the whole time and not learn anything. No. Yeah. No. My God. We would go there. It would still be like really fun. And then we'd still comprehend whatever we're doing. Especially when dice came out. Yeah. Yeah. And then the papers would just go. Yeah. Yeah. You guys gave me so many ripped up sheets of paper. That and slap and slap. I don't think there's anything different. We did the marker game. The marker. We did that once and I know the honest two kids this year are like, can we do that again? I learned so well with that. And I'm like, all right, man. So it's got to be like a once every so often thing. Yeah. If I were to do games every day, like I'd get bored. This would lose the fun. Yeah. But like, yeah, no. It was bad. You guys definitely were a really fun class to have. Yeah. So you pull out like the Oregon Trail in Mach... Oh my God, yeah. Oh no, that was the year before that though, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah. That was Spanish too. Yeah. We always talk about the Oregon Trail or Machi Koro, like buying all the properties. I still don't understand that game. Like actually. I actually don't understand it. It was random economic game in Spanish that you had to try to figure out. Yeah. How to make like the balance of like profits and everything. Like making sure you sold from other people. Yeah. Trying properties off of them. Like, I don't know. Like as an aside, like I am, I'm just wondering what you guys are going to be like next year. I mean, it's going to be a lot of fun. It's going to be a lot of fun. Yeah. What are you guys going to be like next year? I mean, it's, it's definitely weird to think about. Like the thing about this, I've been in this building for 14 years. Like for me. That's a bubble. Yeah. Like for me, like I could move eight hours away or I could go 30 minutes up the road into Philly. I'm like, I don't, I'm like, I'm starting like second guess everything. I'm like, okay, well. Because I've never done anything. Like I never went anywhere cool, cool, different. And like, it's, I don't know. It's just, I don't know how it's going to be. The big thing is like, I know they've talked about it. Like, what are you guys going to major in? But it's so fluid. Like my roommate went from English to elementary education to law enforcement, back to English. Like, like, and I went, I was almost going to start going to school for nursing too, because it was sciences. Like I wanted to learn science, but not have to like that aspect of it. Yeah. But like, it's so fluid. Like whatever you guys have now could not be your major next year. Like it's just, and I know that they've talked about it. It's just, I don't know how it's going to be. The big thing is like, I know they've talked about it. What are you guys going to major in? But it's just, I don't know how it's going to be.
