The podcast episode discusses colorism, which is prejudice or discrimination based on skin tone within the same racial or ethnic group. The hosts, Vashti and Hannah, share their personal experiences with colorism, particularly in the context of dating and the music industry. They highlight how light-skinned individuals are often favored and given more opportunities, while darker-skinned individuals face discrimination. They also mention the fetishization of light-skinned features and the lack of recognition for talented dark-skinned artists. The hosts emphasize the importance of raising awareness and addressing colorism within the black community. Hey guys and welcome back to Vashti's Vibrant World. So today we'll be talking about colorism. Yes, hi guys that was Hannah. It's Vashti. Welcome to my vibrant world and like Hannah said today we will be talking about colorism. Now we've tapped a little bit into that when we discussed texturism but colorism is something that has to do with more so skin tone and um yeah it doesn't have anything to do with hair. So basically colorism is defined as prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone typically amongst people of the same ethnic or racial group. So this definitely applies to black people because within the black community there's a lot of prejudice and discrimination against people with darker skin tone and obviously it's among the same group because we are all black. So colorism comes from obviously light-skinned people and I feel like like I said in the last podcast colorism and texturism are hand in hand because obviously typically it's not okay it's not impossible for somebody of darker skin tone to have a looser curl pattern. Obviously we see it with like Indian people and people amongst the entire diaspora amongst the world but typically within the black community it is people with lighter skin tones that have looser curl patterns and it is usually people with darker skin tones that have tighter curl patterns. So I feel like colorism and texturism definitely go hand in hand but they are still two separate issues. So have you ever been affected by colorism? Oh keep in mind sorry keep in mind um I am dark-skinned. Hannah's like brown yeah Hannah's like a caramel color so obviously it would probably affect me more than it would her so have you ever been affected by colorism? I don't think I have. Ever? No I might have gotten into it but yeah have you? Oh of course. Can you explain? Oh of course. So I've had um oh another thing about colorism at least my personal experiences as far as guys I've faced a lot of it in my dating life the one with white guys or like oh no dark-skinned because with white guys that would be racist colorism is only like sorry guys yes colorism is only within the black community so it's like I faced it a lot a lot from guys who are way darker than me um I haven't really faced it with anyone light-skinned I feel like the most colorist thing a light-skinned male has said to me is oh like I've never messed with a black girl besides you or this is a common one that I find offensive I don't get why like in men or a woman if they're saying this to a man that is dark-skinned um I don't get why they think this is flattering but they'll say something along the lines of oh no it's always that too we're going to touch on that no we're not far off we're going to touch on that but as far as like just you know playing and just out there they'll say something along the lines of like I don't find dark-skinned women attractive but you're the only one I find attractive like it's just weird because then it gets to the point where why would I sit here and be like oh thank you so much if anything I'm gonna be like wait so why don't you find dark-skinned women attractive like and why just me like you like me like I don't know it's just kind of weird it's so weird and it's so awkward because then I have to call them out on their bs and then they get they're like well damn and I'm just like sorry to make this moment awkward but I just don't feel like why are you comfortable with just saying that yeah like why are you thinking that and I feel like also I cannot stay with a man that thinks like that because it's just like I don't know like just the fact that I'm not really like like you know like she's a refugee I think me too no yeah also how a lot of I feel like men want light-skinned babies I don't know what that is there's this one youtube couple and they kept trying like I don't know there's this one youtube couple that kept trying like kept having babies just because they didn't get a light-skinned baby yet and I feel like you know what I'm talking about I don't remember like that I feel like I know but I don't remember either but if she was light-skinned I don't know I don't remember who it was this is a girl she's hispanic and she has like she's dating this guy was dating this black guy and basically she just kept trying for um a light-skinned baby and it's like she did love her kids but the fact that she really wasn't that bad why do you want me that bad like and this oh I see colored eyes yes I've seen it so much on social media too it's this one basketball player can't remember his name for anything but he is black and his baby mom is hispanic and every time that they will post their son he's like oh my dominican baby my light-skinned baby my green-eyed baby like you can see the fetish fetishism I want to say fetishism right there yeah you haven't played my precious baby oh my look like why do you have to add those things like because those are characteristics of like interracial or a lighter skinned baby this is just like why do you have to keep pointing that out it's so weird and I'll see colors in the music industry as well yes and just for example um Mariah the scientist I feel like she um people know her and everything and like she's up there and stuff but when it comes to formula I thought now she has her flowers now she has her flowers and everything but she just got a hit on the top 100 list or whatever that is for billboard yes and I feel like other light-skinned people I feel like they're easy like Ice Spice for example oh yeah like how she's up there and everything but her music is really not that good and like Slow Millie her music is so good and she actually talks about things in her songs so it's like and Slow Millie has had she has been running the billboard charts but for some reason she opened up for Ice Spice I mean Ice Spice's concert why Slow Millie the Slow Millie opening up for Ice Spice why is Drake flying Ice Spice out why is Nicki Minaj hopping on one of Ice Spice songs and she just got out here like in the past two years and why is Taylor Swift why is Taylor Swift asking Ice Spice to be on one of her hit songs it's not because Ice Spice is the greatest rapper known to man no it's because she's easy to push in the music industry they know people will see her they know people will buy her music because she's thick and she's light-skinned exactly and she got curly hair exactly it's not a wig we're never gonna know because people been saying it's a wig people been saying it's not a wig we honestly will never know at this point but it exists so heavily within the music industry and the fact that Mariah the scientist goes viral goes viral um because she has said oh yeah I can't sing like I'm just known as like an artist but she keeps making music consistently singing she sounds horrible but yet people still defend the fact that she can sing even though she's because she's light-skinned and she's pretty pretty pretty privilege and colorism go hand and they run the music industry just like they run a lot of the small things in this world like it is some brown singers Dolce Victoria Monet Ari Lennox I can keep going and going and going Lex I can keep going who deserve their flowers but they will never get this actually who deserve their flowers and have real talent they can write and they can sing and live and they can dance Mariah the scientist will walk back and forth on stage singing her music exactly Victoria Monet will have a whole production set a live band Victoria Monet can dance her breath control is amazing but she will artists like dark-skinned artists like that will never get their flowers because the music industry loves a pretty light-skinned woman and will push them in our face until and I'm not going to say until we get sick of it because people never will but just until it's a problem in society and I feel like there is going to be a moment where it's going to break but we just don't know what that moment is yet yeah but yeah that's our small talk I could go on and on and on about this topic but I just want to cover like the overlay like of the situation but I know talking about this I don't this is something I definitely want to raise attention to and raise awareness to within the black community like it's just something that needs to be talked about so yeah that's all we have for colorism bye guys
