Christ is The Head of the Church

It's really nice to be back with you on another session of the GoToMeeting. And today we're going to be talking about Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ being the head of the church. So I'd like to start the message by asking some questions. And first of all, do we remember that Jesus Christ is the head of the church, you know, giving glory and praise and honor to him? Are we seeing the churches of God, all the churches of different churches of God? We'll be talking about the church in a little bit. But do we see the churches of God recognizing Jesus Christ as the head? And then another question we'll go ahead and ask is, is Jesus Christ the head of us personally? Because he certainly needs to be. So as we ask these questions and we go through the message, we'll just maybe spend some time thinking about what's being asked here. And are we seeing this? Because Jesus Christ is the head of the church. So let's review the scriptures that talk about the authority and the power that's been given to Jesus Christ in his name. So we're going to start in Philippians, the second chapter. In Philippians 2 and verse 6, it says, Although he existed in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself and was made in the likeness of men and took on took the form of a servant and being found in the manner of man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even the death of the cross. So we understand what transpired there, that, you know, the Lord God of the Old Testament. Became Jesus Christ and emptied himself. To be our personal savior, to be the only begotten son of God. So much was done there for Christ to be able to be the head of the church. Continuing on there, it says, Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed upon him a name which is above every name. And at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow of beings in heaven and on earth and under the earth. And every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God, the Father. So God bestowed this upon him. God gave him a name above every name. And as we read that every knee should bow. Let's go back to 1 Corinthians, the 15th chapter. We know that God put everything in subjection to Christ. And this is brought out by Paul in 1 Corinthians 15. And we'll start in verse 23. It says, but each in his own order. Christ, the first fruit, then those who are Christ at his coming. Afterwards, the end comes when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to him who is God and Father, when he shall have put an end to all rule and all authority and power. For it is ordained that he reign until he has put all enemies under his feet. And we know this is brought out in Psalm 110. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For he has put all things in subjection under his feet. But when it is said that all things have been put in subjection, it is clearly evident that it does not include him who put all things in subjection under his feet. But when he has put all things in subjection to him, then shall the Son of himself also be subject to him who put all things in subjection to him, so that God may be all in all. So, God the Father again has done this. He has put everything in subjection to Jesus Christ. And then we know, as it says here, Jesus Christ is subject to God the Father. So, we won't turn back there, but we know in John 14, 6, Christ talks about himself. He says he is the way, he's the truth, and he's the life. And no one can come to the Father except through him. We know we're reconciled to God the Father through Christ. And that through the very blood of Jesus Christ, we're redeemed. So, God has set it this way for Christ to be the head of this church. It's his church. The church is only built on Jesus Christ. And we'll read about that in a little bit, about that foundation. But the church is only built on Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ knows who are his. Let's go back to Matthew, the 16th chapter. Matthew 16, we're going to start verse 13. Now, after coming into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus questions his disciples saying, And they said, some say John the Baptist, and others Elijah, and others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. And he said to them, but you, whom do you declare me to be? Then Simon Peter answered and said, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said to them, blessed are you, Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And the same things can be said of us. Those of us in the church that God's placed the spirit within, we have much revealed to us. From God and Jesus Christ through the spirit. He goes on to say here, I say also to you that you are Peter. But upon this rock, I will build my church. And the gates of the grave shall never prevail against it. So, the church, we'll just talk about for a moment here. The church, Greek word there, ekklesia, it is the ones God calls, the called out ones. And they belong to Christ. That's what the church is, and a lot of people struggle with that. Because different church organizations recognize themselves as the church. But the church is just people all over the world down through time that God has called. And they've repented and accepted Jesus Christ as their savior. And they belong to Christ. With the receiving of the Holy Spirit. That's the church down through time. And as we'll read in a moment, we really don't know who is part of the body of Christ all around this world. Who God has called and who he's working with. But the church is the called out ones. And it's Jesus Christ's church. Let's go to John 10. This is brought out a little bit more in John 10. John 10. In verse 14. It says, I am the good shepherd and I know those who are mine and I am known of those who are mine. Right. So Christ knows who belong to him and those that belong to Christ know Christ. Know that he's the head. Know that he's the head. Just as the father knows me, I also know the father and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring those also and they shall hear my voice and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. So, again, it's clear here who the flock is, who they belong to. And who Jesus Christ is to the flock. The flock is his and he has others. And again, down through time, we don't know all the ones God has called and worked with. And even at this time around the world, we don't know. But they're all Christ. They all belong to him. It's his flock and there's one shepherd. So do we see the churches of God recognizing Christ as the head? Well, Christ gave all those in the body instructions and things that they should be doing. I want to review one of those back in Matthew 28. So if you would turn to Matthew 28 with me. And this was instructions that Jesus gave to the apostles. And that these instructions carry on down through time to us today for all the churches. Matthew 28 in verse 16, he said, Now the eleven disciples went into Galilee to the mountain, which Jesus had appointed for them to meet. And when they saw him, they worshiped him. But some doubted and Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Again, here pointing out the authority has been given to him. Therefore, go and make disciples in all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. And lo, I will be with you always, even to the completion of the age. Amen. So this message. And what Christ told them to do is has carried down through time. Through. The body of Christ. To go out, teach the commandments. To teach God and Jesus Christ. And to baptize. That is the church's responsibility. The church's responsibility. And all the churches of God should be working together. Certainly not against each other, but working together to accomplish this. This is allowing Jesus Christ to be the head of the church. This is also brought out and we'll read again in Luke 24. Go to Luke, if you would, with me, Luke 24. In verse 44, it says, and he said to them, these are the words that I spoke to you when I was yet with you, that all the things which were written according to me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and in the Psalms, it must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, according as it is written, it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day. And in his name, repentance and remission of sin should be preached to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. So, again, that is the commission that is part of the responsibility of the body of Christ to do this. We're going to go back now to the first Corinthians, the second chapter. We'll head back there. Paul preached Christ. Paul preached the power of God. Paul didn't preach himself. Let's see what is said here back in first Corinthians. Two, he says, and I, brethren, when I came to you, I did not come with superiority of speech or wisdom. He'll explain what that wisdom he's talking about is here in a little bit. In proclaiming the testimony of God to you. For I decided not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And how powerful of a message is that? Well. Christ is the head. And that's the foundation we're built upon. So, yes, the preaching of Jesus Christ and him crucified is key. And I was in weakness and in fear and much trembling when I was with you. And my message and my preaching was not in persuasive words of human wisdom. So that's not shouldn't be what we should be hearing from the body of Christ. The preaching of human wisdom. Being persuasive in that way. But it said it rather it was in demonstration of the spirit and the power. And we know that the spirit that's been given to us, it is a spirit of power. That your faith may not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. And that's all of our faith. Those of all those of us in the church, our faith is in the power of God. Now, we speak the wisdom among the spiritually mature. However, it is not the wisdom of this world, nor the rulers of this world who are coming to nothing. Rather, we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery. Even the hidden wisdom that God ordained before the ages and to our glory. So this is what Paul preached. He preached Christ. He preached the power of God. He preached this wisdom and this understanding in a mystery. That we can understand. Well, at times we see things within the churches of God, the body of Christ. That Christ isn't the head of. And yes, there's a lot of things that go on that we know Christ isn't the head of that. But one thing, the church isn't the head of that. But one thing, the churches need to be sound minded. And that comes from Christ. Let's see what Paul writes about this in Romans 12. Romans 12, in verse 12. Romans 12. In verse one. He says, I exhort you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your spiritual service. Do not conform yourselves to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind in order that you may prove what is well-pleasing and good and the perfect will of God. And that's that's what we're all striving to do, aren't we, is build the mind of Christ, to transform our minds, to get our minds away from the past, the worldly things, and to have our minds transformed again, to have a mind like God and like Jesus Christ. To be doing things we know that please God, all of us in the church. It goes on to say, for I say to the great that was given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think. But to think with sound mindness, as God has divided to each one a measure of faith. So now we're none of us are to think more highly of ourselves to be high minded than we ought to. Shouldn't be that way within the churches. For even as we have many members in one body, but all members do not have the same function. Likewise, we being many are one body in Christ and each one members of one another. How clear is that we're all of the body of Christ, all the called out ones. But again, the point I'm bringing out here is none of us, especially some of the churches of God, we should not think of ourselves more highly than anyone else. But sometimes we don't see that. Let's go back to James, the third chapter. Because if we're all the same body, why would one one group or one person think more highly of themselves and others? When we're considering Jesus Christ is the hip. Let's go back to James. I want to talk a little bit about wisdom. Because we should be seeing wisdom in the churches of God, the body of Christ. James three. And I want to go to verse. Thirteen. It says, who is water? And understanding among you. I think we would all agree within the body of Christ. We should see wisdom. We should see understanding. Because we know who God and Jesus Christ are. We fear them. We love them. We love them. We love them. We fear them. We love them. We study their word. We try to keep their laws. Wisdom and understanding come from this. We should see this within the body of Christ. So let him demonstrate his works through good conduct and the meekness of wisdom. So there should it should be seen. There's a demonstration there. But let's go on and see what James says here. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not boast and lie against the truth. Because these are within the hearts. Of people. And sound wisdom, understanding. Doesn't go with this. This wisdom does not come down from above, but it is earthly. It's sensual. It's demonic. Is what it is. Because where bitter envy and selfish ambition are, there is dissension in every evil thing. So that's a problem. And that's a problem we've seen within the body of Christ. So that's a problem. And that's a problem we've seen within the body of Christ. What we're talking about here. Again, it indicates that there's not the proper wisdom and understanding within the body of Christ. It is also an indication that Christ isn't the head there. Because if Christ was the head. These things wouldn't be. But the wisdom from above is first pure and peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and without hypocrisy. That's what Christ is the head of. Within the church. Now, the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. So, again, we look for these things within the body of Christ. For sound mindedness is in wisdom and understanding. Let's go back to first Corinthians. Fourteen. And we talked about. Peace there as we finished out James and but first Corinthians 14. Verse thirty three. It says, for God is not the author of confusion, right? That's God's not behind any type of confusion. And neither is Jesus Christ. But what is God the author of? But of peace. God's the author of peace has in all the churches of the saints, all the churches of the saints. If God's there and Jesus Christ is the head, which Jesus Christ is the head of the church. There should be peace. Not confusion of any sort. Well, while we're in Corinthians, I want to go back to first Corinthians, the third chapter. So. We'll ask the question of.
