Like, how many times is a ball getting hit right to your first baseman going right through his glove on a pretty much tailor-made double play? I mean, there's no guarantee you convert that double play, but even still, that keeps it at a tie game, maybe a one-run deficit if they don't convert the double play and they get the lead runner. Maybe a run scores in the back. Whatever, I'm not going to spend a ton of time on that game, because it's a fluke play. Game two showed a lot of fight. Game three, home opener against the Giants, Bob Melvin coming back to town showed some fight, one for Peter. Again, you kind of put that one aside, and you're like, okay, what is really this Padres team? And I texted you, games two and three of the Giants series, just like, oh, my God, dude. What is this team? What is this team doing? You have a game where Tatis, Homers twice, Machado. And by the way, Machado and Tatis, the home runs they hit were, two of them were absolute tanks into the upper deck. And then the other one was, Tatis just puts an unbelievable swing on a good pitch off the plate outside, puts it in the left field corner. Like, there's not many guys in baseball that can pull that pitch and put it out. I mean, you can pull that pitch, and sure, maybe you get a little single out of it, or maybe a seeing-eye double, or whatever. But there's not many guys that are hitting that ball 360 feet. And those are the only three runs you score in the whole game. On a line, yeah. But those are the only three runs you score the whole game. And like, that ain't going to happen a lot. That ain't going to happen a lot. No, we were just saying off-air right before, like, I got the box score open. You got your top five hitters are 6 for 19. That's roughly a 317, 320 average. I don't know the exact math, but like, that's a pretty good day. You expect to win a game where your top five hitters are 6 for 19. And then you got Profar 0 for 4. We can talk about Profar later. As much as his Vor, Var, whatever they're calling it right now, you and I have been Profar apologists for a long time. But, man, it's tough watching him out there. But at the plate so far. And then, it's appalling. I mean, aside from, I mean, you can, Merrill, but he's a rookie. He's a rookie. Yeah, he was bad. He was DFA'd by the Rockies. Yeah. Sixth is wild. So, like, so, I mean, you know me. I've been a baseball guy my entire life. I do it for a living. I'm a coach now. And what I've learned in my time coaching is basically every slot, one through five, has a purpose. And, you know, leadoff guy sees pitches, gets on base, steals bases. Two guy, there's an argument to be made for your best hitter to hit two. That's kind of a new thing, a new school kind of thing. Three guy goes without saying. Four guy, clean up. Five guy, two-out RBI guy. That's one big thing I've learned since getting back into coaching is five guy is a two-out RBI guy. Who is going to get a run across when we've got two outs and our leadoff guy and our three-hitter are on base? Six guy resets the table. That's one of your guys that, you know, he may struggle a little bit with the off-speed stuff, but you're looking to get him a fastball in that slot. And he's going to turn on one, and he's going to get a good pitch, and he's going to pass the baton to the seven guy. Like, that's a guy that continues the inning. That's the big ticket for the six guy. And pro-far in the six hole is wild. With that knowledge, like, that is right. Like, Campy's been – and, I mean, you remember when we were talking to Big Boy from the Giants, that game we got to go to and get a little bit of inside baseball. And, like, we kind of – once that guy said that, like, our heads kind of turned, like, oh, we kind of got something here. Like, maybe this guy is, you know – and there's always that thing with catchers. Catchers take so long to develop because defense is such a massive part of a catcher's game. And, like, yeah, the bat may play, but, like, that's not everything. You cannot start in Major League Baseball if you're not a defense-first catcher. Or not defense-first, but if you don't have that rapport with pitchers, if you're not a guy who can throw the ball, if you don't know how to call a game. There's just a big hurdle to – yeah. Right. Yes. Yes. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I mean, big thump. I mean, dude, opposite field three-run home run today. Huge. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. Me too. Me too. He has an approach. He's a hitter. He's a hitter. He's here to catch on a day game or a weird start time game to give Campy a day off. Like, I was not impressed whatsoever. Like, yeah. Like, why is Sully not up here with the big club? Because you remember for how long we were carrying three catchers. You know? Like, and there was times when Austin Hedges was with the Padres that he was the primary guy, but then you had two other catchers who were a little more bat first that could take over late in the game when, you know, you could sacrifice that little bit of catcher defense in exchange for a little bit of thump. And, like, it worked to an extent, but it's, you know, I don't know. I've always been a big fan of catchers being a guy that values pitching in my own way. Like, I've always loved catchers and what they bring to the table, and I don't know. Higgy, you know, he's probably a great guy. I'm not going to come over here and, you know, duke all over his character, but, like, man, a Golden Sombrero in your first start when, you know, you're not bringing much defensive. They were not completely non-competitive. Completely non-competitive. But let's, okay, okay, that's a good segue. Let's go into the competitive aspect of it because, like, what was, I can't remember which game it was. I think it was, I think it was yesterday's game. Machado strikes out or pops out with runners in scoring position, two outs, makes the last out of the inning, tries to snap, tries to Bo Jackson it, snapped about over his knee. He's, like, that's competing. That's someone who is ready to compete, ready to be there and produce for a team, and when he doesn't produce, he is not happy. That's the type of, that's what we want to see. Mm-hmm. Six games. Yeah. Six games. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. World Series champions last year, Evan Carter. And guess who's joining them this year? We have no left-handed starting pitching, and we have, I mean, in terms of the plate, I mean, you've got Crony, Merrill, and I mean, Pauly's got to be a starter after that. I mean, you can't keep running Tyler Wade out there. He's done some good things, but, like, nothing, I mean, unless this dude's hitting doubles and hitting bombs, he doesn't belong in the, he's not that veteran president. He's a guy. He's a guy. Exactly. He is a bench piece. And he's a decent bench piece. Fine. But Graham Pauly, Graham Pauly deserves the bulk of, because he's the same guy. Right? He's a left-handed hitting third baseman. There is more upside to Graham Pauly than there is to Tyler Wade. Period. Exactly. Period. Let's see. We'll pull it up right now. I'm pulling up the box scores. Tyler Wade has 10 at-bats. He's batting .400 with a .938 OPS. Which means he has, yeah, which means he has two doubles and he's four for 10. That's it. That's all it means. His career, his career, he's a .220 hitter with a .598 OPS. He's not, the track record plays in baseball. It just does. He is who he is. He is who he is. And you'd be better off seeing what you have with Graham Pauly than you would with running 600 OPS Tyler Wade out there. Period. That's just it. For sure. Or, you know, Manny needs a day off from the plate or from the, whoever needs a day off. You know what I mean? That's kind of the interesting thing with the NL getting the DH is, like, nobody in the National League had an everyday DH, and it still kind of feels like nobody really has one. Like, who's the closest? Kyle Schwarber still plays the outfield. You know what I mean? Like, that's the closest guy you've got. And he's still getting regular field time. Harper, still getting, they found a place in the field for him. He's playing first base permanently. Like, it just kind of, the National League still is the National League for some reason. Yeah, dude. Off to a hot start. Yep. 22, the guy that earned the contract. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. If he doesn't, like, he's never going to be a 35 home run guy. He may squeak out 30 this year if he's crazy lucky. But that's my point is that he's not going to get to 30 without an obscene amount of luck. But he may hit 30 doubles, may hit 35 doubles, may hit 40. If you're a 40 double guy, and I'm not saying he's going to be, but this is media, we speculate, and it's fun. If you're a 40 double guy, you belong in the three hole. And if he is constantly on second base with Manny Machado hitting behind him, that's a recipe for success. That's a guy that you no longer can nibble around the plate to Manny Machado. You now have to give him a pitch to hit. And he's likely going to make you pay. Like, Manny's track record is going to play. Manny's track record is going to play. Cronenworth, and with the protection of Tatis in front of him and Machado behind him, he's now seeing a ton more hittable pitches. And he has thus far, through six games, succeeded. And that's just flat out. You don't need your three guy to be hitting 40 ball. I mean, you'd love it, but you don't need it. You need your three guy on base. You need your three guy to have a 790 OPS or above. And if he's hitting that many doubles, he's going to do just fine. And he's going to live in that three hole. I kind of like it. And it does break up the righty-lefty-righty with Tatis and Machado. So far, I'm really loving what I'm seeing from Cronen. And the defense, obviously, is going to play. You know, he's a shortstop playing first base. What's he going to do? Suck at first base defensively? No. He's going to catch the ball. He's going to make diving stops. He's going to defend well. Like, that's just what a shortstop does. So, absurd. Absurd. Yeah, yeah. I mean, even with Eggie and Pauly, like, you could do worse, you know? Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I agree. Three run ding-dong off the frickin' pole. Which, I mean, and let's get into that game because that was a pretty pathetic thing outside of that ninth inning. I mean, you're down not – you give up six in the eighth inning. Who was – let's go – Cosgrove, dude. I mean, do we even know what the bullpen is at this point? Nobody's role is really carved out besides Suarez and Matsui. Like, what it seems like is Yuki Matsui set up, Suarez closer. Do you get seven out of your starter and then roll the dice? Like, no, obviously not. Like, I mean, Cosgrove's still young. You're going to have – I mean, dude, look at Josh Hader, man. Josh Hader, before we traded for him, he had a four-point whatever ERA. Like, he was struggling mightily. And Cosgrove last year in 54 games had a 1.75 ERA in 51 and a third innings. He was a monster. And, you know, we're not going to chalk up his entire career to one outing. One outing of one-third of an inning. That's just not what we're going to do. And then you've got Brito, who is a career starter, who's now been moved to the bullpen. We're going to find out tomorrow, right? Do they play tomorrow or do they play? I believe in him every so often. But as far as a fifth starter the whole year, no. But I think this situation, if I can put myself into the mind of A.J. Prella, the general manager, and Mike Schilt, the manager, is they're giving Brito meaningful innings so that he can get used to the feel of major league pitching, of major league hitters, and being a pitcher in the major leagues, versus Matt Waldron, who saw some major league innings last year, maybe a little bit comfortable, had a really strong spring, and can maybe get them through the first month or two while they season Brito a little bit, while they season, who's the other guy, is it Vasquez? Is that the guy? There's a couple of guys that are typical starters. But, I mean, you got Waldron versus Kyle Gibson tomorrow. That's going to be, I think there's going to be some, I think it's going to be a high-scoring game tomorrow. But we're going to see what we've got with Waldron. I mean, nobody's really used to seeing a knuckleballer at this point. At the very least, he's weird, he's wonky, he's got something going on, and he's got a couple of major league innings. He's got, what did he have, five or six starts last year, four or five, something like that. He's seen it before, and again, the strong spring really does help. I think in terms of Jackson Merrill, Merrill's going to make this team no matter what, based on necessity. Waldron had to fight for a spot, and give him credit, man, he earned it. He's here. I think you have an argument, for sure, I do. I really do think it came down to, this guy had major league experience last year, let's see what we got. Let's reward him for the strong spring and the experience last year, and let's let Brito get some season. I mean, look, he went, Brito went two and a third today with no runs scored. Like, that's, albeit in an already, you know, it's already a rout. But, he's still, I mean, this is a potential playoff team, the Giants. And he goes two and a third with, let's see, two and a third, or no, I'm sorry, that was yesterday. Yesterday he did that. Not today, that's my bad. He goes two and a third, no hits, couple of strikeouts. No hits, two and a third innings. Goes seven outs, no hits. I mean, that's pretty solid. I do think Brito starts at a certain point, if for nothing else, we need some innings eaten up. You know, a la Pedro Avila last year. Like, there's a situation where that happens. But I don't know, what used to be a thin staff has now kind of become some depth. Which is more than we can say for the hitters. I mean, Darvish, Musgrove, Cease, I'll put that against anyone in the league. In a best of five, best of seven series, I'll put that against anyone in the league. Seriously. You got, I mean, you know what you got with you, Darvish. You got fucking hometown hero, Joe Musgrove, and then you got a guy that finished second nail, Cy Young, two years ago. And this does, I don't care what anyone says, this does merit something. Played on the worst team in baseball last year. Dude, look at the White Sox this year. He would have been on an island by himself this year. I'd take those three against anyone. And then you got King, Longman out of the bullpen. Again, it goes back to a lack of lefties. That's the big thing. You got a lack of lefties. I agree. I do agree. I think his stuff is so good. It's so good. If he hones that command, like, and Cease is very similar. Cease's stuff, that's, dude, his slider is disgusting. I mean, it is, it's fastball playing until the last ten feet, and then it just gets away from you. And you got no shot. Yeah, I think, I mean, coming to a new team, working with a new pitching coach, getting out of a certain scenario into a new scenario, it's always going to be different. There's always going to be a little hiccup. But overall, I think he's going to be, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if after the All-Star break, he lines up as the ace. I would not be surprised in the slightest. Easily. Easily. Let me ask you this. Who would you take? Snell or Cease? Yeah. And the lefty aspect too, it is really hard to pick against Snell. Right. He had like 60 something RBI's last year. Let's look it up. He had like 60 something RBI's batting fourth out of 100 games. That's not enough. Tons. 2023. He did. 58 RBI's. I mean, aside from like the Rangers and those types of teams. But like a team that's really trying to fill in a, that's trying to add a superstar to a homegrown team, for sure. He is the guy. We need you to hit the ball a country mile, and we need you to flip your hair and say hi to the fans. And be the, and absolutely cannon people into next week. That's what we need. It's insane, dude. It's so great. I think those guys couldn't carry his jockstrap in terms of art. No, I'm obviously kidding, but he's got an absolute gun. He's got a gun. I think that's a really good question. It is probably the most beautiful thing in baseball, is to watch a guy just take a pitch where it's put and hit it with authority. Not just like. He's not just. He's not trying to lift the ball to left field. He's just piecing the ball on a line right past the third baseman and standing on second base like, yeah. What are you going to do about it? Yep. Yep. As much as I'm optimistic about the future, I am still just mainly concerned with this year. And just have a successful year. Have a good year.
