Millennials have both positive and challenging attributes. When dealing with them, it's important to ask questions that align with their goals and expectations. Instead of dismissing their ambitions, ask them about their preparations and understanding of the job. Coaching is important, especially with Millennials, who may lack experience. Ask them about their learning experiences and what they enjoy about working. Everyone has a different interpretation of work-life balance, so it's crucial to inquire about their perspective. Asking questions is key when dealing with Millennials. Again, Millennials have some very good attributes, and then they have some attributes that can be somewhat challenging, just like any generation gap. Remember your questioning sequences. Don't try to change them based on their generation. Make sure you're asking questions to create alignment with where they want to go, where you expect them to go, and that will serve you well. Now one of the common things that we hear all the time about Millennials is, you know, geez, they started last Friday, and they want to get promoted because it's already Wednesday. Now I'm sure you're laughing. There's obviously an exaggeration in that statement. One of the things that you have to do instead of saying, no, no, no, no, you're not ready, is to ask questions. What have you done to prepare yourself? What is your understanding of that job? What have you done to investigate that job in terms of knowledge and skill set requirements? Coaching is not an argument, and the reason we bring that up, especially in the generation of Millennials, is often we will hear from leaders, well, you know, he's a Millennial, and they start talking about what they're going to do, and we'll ask them questions such as, well, what have you learned from that person? Oh, I haven't sat down with them yet. It is critical we ask questions. What do you enjoy about working? What is ideal work-life balance to you? When you think about progressing in the organization, what does that mean to you? When you take some of the attributes, think about some of the typical attributes, and especially if the person's exhibiting them, is to ask questions. What does that mean to you? Everybody will have a different interpretation of work-life balance, and it's amazing. Sometimes they won't even have an answer because they will have it more as a concept, more as a theory, more as a way of life. Remember to ask your questions.
