Playing your music is going to make the weekend a whole lot better for a lot of folks, man. I'm loving your country music. Man, thank you. Absolutely. I have actually known of your music for a while. But until Nicole Zeller from Brick Shore Media put an email blast out. Then I've reached out for an interview. And here we are tonight. So I appreciate it. Man, thank you so much for having me. Yeah, Nicole. She does a great job, man. She makes things a whole lot easier for me for sure. She does. I've been working with her for a while now. And we actually met in person at the Wild Horse Saloon back in 2018. We were hanging out at the Nashville Universe Awards and got to meet in person finally. So she works with some great artists. And you are one of them. You bet. Well, man, I appreciate that. Absolutely. You're a Georgia native. Where about in Georgia? Man, have you ever heard of a little town called Rome, Georgia? No, I haven't. It's up in the northwest corner, man. They've got a lot of colleges there. I'm actually from a little town about 35 miles northwest of Rome or north of Rome. And I'm about 35 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Oh, okay. I'm up in the very northwest corner, up in the mountains. Okay. Of northwest Georgia. A little town called Somerville is where I'm from. Okay. I know where Chattanooga, Tennessee is. I've got a friend I interviewed here a while back. Brandon Davis is from Chattanooga, Tennessee. Yes, sir. Yeah, he opened for Tim McGraw a couple of summers ago. That's awesome. Yeah. And I'll tell you what, you're going to be opening for some of those folks, too, with the brand of country music that you're making. And you're exactly what country radio needs. A mix of modern country with some classic mixed in. I love that. And the baritone voice, too. Hey, thank you. I tell everybody I can't hit it. Every time I open my mouth it comes out of my nose. That's just how it works. I say every once in a while the south comes out of my mouth, too. I said 20 years in southeast Oklahoma, around Ada, Oklahoma, where Blake Shelton is actually from, and then I moved to Branson, Missouri, and been doing this radio show now for about 12 years here in Branson and having a lot of fun meeting the indie artists. That's awesome. So I love doing it. Now, you started at a pretty young age in music at just 14 years old. You started singing gospel music in church. Yes, sir. My parents had a gospel group that they traveled around with, and I got to following them a little bit. And when I didn't follow them, I had to go. I mean, Mom and Dad was leaving, and I had to go with them, you know, just being around it and listening to them my whole life. And then my granddaddy on my dad's side, my papa, him and his brothers had a band in the 60s, and they played music. So I was always around music my whole life. And then later on in the early 2000s, you said you formed a duo and you started getting attention from even a Grammy-winning producer, Wilbur C. Rimes, who is the father of LeAnn Rimes. That is awesome. Yeah, man, me and a very good friend of mine from my hometown, he actually was a closer friend to my older cousin. We linked up and started writing songs together, and it wouldn't be a surprise for, you know, I'm not kidding. We wouldn't even be broadcasting it, and we might go play. His family had a farm, and we'd sit around with a piece of guitar in the middle of a cornfield, and it wouldn't be a shock if 300 people showed up in the middle of a cornfield around a bonfire just to watch us teach and sing. Wow. And Wilbur actually came down because he was friends with Duke's dad and come down to a dove shoot, and lo and behold, we were out there with our guitars, and all these people showed up, and it kind of intrigued him a little bit. Yeah, that's awesome. Well, I was in southeast Oklahoma at the time Leanne Rimes started singing blue. I think she was about 13 or something like that back then, and that 90s country, though, is what really got me wanting to do country radio because I started doing 80s music back in the 80s when I went to broadcasting school. I lived in San Diego at the time before I moved back home to Missouri, and then to Oklahoma before Missouri, too. But, yeah, that 90s country pretty much did it for me. I'm sure that helped you along the way, too. Absolutely. That's what I cut my teeth on, man, is growing up in that generation there. You know, people like, of course, he was huge in the 80s with George Strait and Keith Whitley and Clint Black and Tracy Lawrence. Travis, being a Georgia guy, I love Travis Tritt and Ellen Jackson. Boy, me too. So that kind of music was all Mark Wills and just influenced by a lot of different people, for sure. Tracy Lawrence was actually the first person I saw in concert in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Yeah, I get a lot of comparisons to Tracy. A cool story, we sang Tracy in concert one time when I was part of the duo, and I looked up at him and motioned on a guitar pick, and he came over and he handed me one of his guitar picks and I handed him one of mine. He just smiled and waved at me and put it in his pocket. I mean, I'm sure he washed it with his jeans that night and didn't think no less about it. That's pretty cool. It was a funny little deal there. You know, he's still doing his thing in the world of country music. He's also had a radio show. I've been listening to that for a while, and then he's got a brand new single out that keeps popping up on my news feed, too. So he's still making country music. Yes, sir. So that's awesome. I think he's got a new EP coming out, too, pretty soon. Yep. You took some time off from the music industry, and you kind of felt a void in your life, but you're back now, and I'm sure glad you are, brother. Man, I appreciate it, man. We had some things going on, and man, I'm a believer, I'm a Christian, and God was really dealing with me on some things as far as ministry-wise, and also my kids were getting old. I had small kids at the time, and I was missing a lot with them. And so with Duke, the guy I was singing with, his kids were in the stuff, and I felt a call in the ministry, and he really felt like he wanted to be involved in coaching his kids' sports, which I got to do that with mine as well. But my call-in was more ministry, and his call-in was more into being a community coach and stuff like that, and it's turned out extremely well for both of us. Well, that is awesome. Boy, I tell you, they love you in Branson. We are right smack in the middle of what they call the Bible Belt here in the Branson Ozarks, and there is a lot of Christian country music here and gospel music, and I've been getting a lot of that sent to me here lately, and there is some good stuff out there, and I'm excited to be playing some of that on the radio too, mixed in with the country music that we play from the indie artists. So keep doing that kind of music, man. It is still really popular, and I'm a believer too, and God has a plan for all of us, and you're doing his work when you're making that kind of music. Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Absolutely. There's some good stuff out there now for sure. Yep. Now, you talked a little bit about songwriting and co-writing with some folks. Do you still do those co-writes, or do you come to Nashville every now and then and do the writers' round thing or any of that? Oh, yeah, man. I still do the co-writing stuff. I've written songs. I've had a lot of great writers take me under their wing and really helped me. I met some Hall of Fame guys that really stuck their neck out and believed in what I was doing and helped me along the way. Next week, we'll be in Nashville for CRS all week, and I've got a lot of stuff lined up for that and meeting with some people that I write with and stuff along the way. That is awesome. I haven't done CRS in about 10 years. It's about time. I need to go do it again. I work another gig, and it just kind of keeps me from getting to Nashville very often now. Like I say, we haven't been since 2018, but we used to go at least every couple of years, and I need to get back. I guarantee you that town's changed in the last six years. Oh, 100%, buddy. So many people move into Nashville now. It used to be, a buddy of mine told me back then, it was probably about 25,000 a year, and I'm sure it's maybe that a day now. I don't know what it is. Yeah, they used to be a saying up there, 2,500 people a day get off a bus and 2,500 people a day get on one. Get on it, yeah. Yeah. Well, you know, as long as you're living your dream and the bonus of it is getting paid to do what you love to do, there's nothing better than that. No, sir. So, that's awesome. Now, you signed a deal with a private label artist, it's called, and you got back into focusing to putting out music for your fans and something everyone can relate to. And when I talk about country music and doing these interviews, it's the stories behind the songs that I love to hear. And country music tells the best stories, doesn't it? Yes, sir, 100%. Dude, that's, to me, you know, I'm a fan of all music, but there's definitely one thing you can say about country music that you really can't say about a lot of other stuff right now, is it does have a good storyline to it, and it does touch things that are more about life today, and it always has. And, I mean, there's, you know, I'm not trying to knock anybody, I'm not going to say anything about any other music, but, I mean, you can only listen to, you know, every other song. Not everybody wants to listen to disco music every day about shaking it. I mean, nothing against it at all, I'm just saying, you know, there's really not that much of a storyline about that. Well, you can do that on the country dance floor, man. We went to a concert about three weeks ago now and saw Randall King, if you know who he is. Absolutely. Yeah, he's originally from San Antonio, Texas, but he was performing in Springfield, Missouri at Midnight Rodeo, and before his show started, they got this big huge dance floor in the middle of that thing, and those country line dancers, man, they can shake it pretty good, so I wouldn't rule that out compared to disco. It'll give them a run for its money. Rock, rock, rock, rock. And they had a disco ball on the country dance floor. How about that? Yeah. So, yeah, I love to watch them country line dancers. I can't dance forth a lick, you know, and I got two left feet when it comes to that, but I can sure play the music on the radio. That is a fun thing to do. Right on. That's what I'm talking about. I do a lot of playing music on the radio, too. And, you know, doing this show over the last 12 years, a lot of good collaborations have come from it, too. People have gotten together and actually met through this program and co-written together and maybe do some duets together. That's just a really neat thing, too. Right. Love that. Now, let me ask you this. What would be your dream gig, an artist that you would like to either open for or maybe do a duet with? Who might be some names we might know? Well, of course, man. George Strong. George Strong. You know what I mean? He's the man. I mean, dude, I've actually got to do a couple with one of my heroes growing up we didn't even mention. He actually recorded a song with me before he passed away a few years ago, Darryl Chamberlain. Okay. I actually did get to do some stuff with Darryl. But my dream would be, of course, to do something with George Cray or, you know, man. Treshie Lawrence, for sure. I mean, because I am a huge Treshie Lawrence fan, Travis Tread, anybody like that. You know, that's pretty much the top of my bucket list would be do something with Ken George. When I was living in southeast Oklahoma, I worked at a horse trailer factory, building horse trailers for seven years, and they're called Sundowner trailers. You might have a dealership there in Georgia. They've got the big living quarters in them and everything, and they would send them up to Elkhart, Indiana, to put the living quarters in a lot of them. But I got to work on seven horse trailers that Darryl Singletary owned because he sponsored them, and they built him seven horse trailers. Some of them were stock trailers, of course, and those are real easy to do. But, yeah, that was a privilege to get to touch some of the stuff that was going to go to Darryl Singletary. And he was hot and heavy in the country music scene at that time, back in the 90s, too. He was unbelievable, son. Yes, sir. He was a real cowboy. Yep, absolutely. He loved that cowboy life. So what a big loss in the world of country music. And just recently we lost Toby Keith, too, because he was from Clinton, Oklahoma, and one of the reasons I started doing country radio. And, yeah, just a huge loss. And he's got a number one album out, even though he's not with us any longer right now around the country. So that is awesome. Yeah, he was a – that's going to be – people don't realize, man, just how influential he was in country music, not only as a songwriter and a performer, man, but he helped get a lot of other career logs, too. He did. I play a gentleman on the radio every once in a while, and I finally had a chance to interview him by the name of Lance Carpenter. He signed to Toby Keith's label, and he's helped artists like Randy Houser, that I didn't know about, that he helped, and also Joe Nichols, and then the Taylor Swift thing that we got going up here in Kansas City with Travis Kelsey. He helped her get started, too. Yep. That's pretty wild stuff. Well, I want to play one of your songs. We're going to actually play three of them tonight. The first one we want to talk about is called Keep On Livin'. Tell us about this one. Man, Keep On Livin' is a song that I recorded a few years ago, and it was – it's actually one that I didn't write, but a guy – a man named Gerald Cramp and T.W. Hale wrote that song. And I mean, two legendary songwriters. And when I heard the song, man, I just really – I loved the inspiration that it had behind it, the hope that the song gave. And when it got pitched to me and I heard it, I was like, yeah, it's definitely one that feels like something I'd love to represent. So we kept that one. As soon as we got it, I yanked it up. That is awesome. Now, let's talk about that process for a second, because I play a lot of the artists that were on Blake's team of The Voice or America's Got Talent or American Idol. And they got a lot of great original music, but to be on those talent competitions, you've got to put your voice to somebody else's songs just like you're doing here when a song is pitched to you or you hear it. Tell us about that process of taking that song and making it your own. Man, I'll tell you, man, I have a lot of people ask me when I go places, you know, that they're looking to get into music or something like that. My number one rule that I try to tell everybody, and this fits with music or anything else. If you're trying to do something that's going to impact someone else, I always say if you can't feel it, they're not going to feel it. The people you're singing to are the people that you're trying to reach. If you can't feel what you're doing, they're definitely not going to feel it. So before I would just own that I didn't write, I'm definitely going to spend some time and making sure it's something that I can portray myself personally, that I can feel, number one, and that I can relate to myself. Because if I can't make people believe that I feel that song is true, then what's the sense in doing it? And I really love that song because, I mean, come on, man, no matter what's going on, I feel good, man, and it's worth living, and there's hope. And you can find hope in it, and God's good. Absolutely. And, you know, music is therapeutic. It helps people heal and gets them through tough times. And when they're having a tough time, they can go back and relate to or call up that song and maybe, you know, it's so easy now with the technology we have now. It's YouTube, it's Spotify, it's all of this other streaming. You can pop up that song in no time and get through those tough times in your life. Absolutely. Freedom Jam USA Back on September 30th in St. Louis, Missouri And Jesse Keith Whitley was the headliner He's Keith Whitley's son and Laurie Morgan's son And he brought Laurie Morgan's tour bus and everything He was borrowing her bus But had a big bus parked out there And we had a good time getting to hang out with him And take some pictures And got to meet Audra McLaughlin Who was on season six of The Voice She went further than Morgan Wallen in that season And I didn't know that So we had a blast And 100% of the proceeds went to the veterans To help them build tiny homes in that area And get them off the streets And get them employed and jobs And if they need a canine There was people there to help them with that too For their PTSD and all that So yeah, we love our veterans here in
