June 27 Marveled Faith

In this transcription, Pastor Tim Hall discusses a powerful encounter Jesus had with a centurion. The centurion approached Jesus, expressing concern for his paralyzed and tormented servant. Jesus offered to come and heal the servant, but the centurion humbly insisted that Jesus only needed to speak a word for healing to occur. Jesus was amazed by the centurion's faith and declared it to be greater than any he had seen in Israel. He then told the centurion that his servant would be healed, and it happened immediately. The centurion's confession of his own sin and unworthiness combined with his unwavering trust in Jesus impressed and astonished Jesus. This story highlights the power of faith. As we go through the words of Jesus in chronological order, we come to what I think is one of the most amazing encounters that Jesus had. In Matthew 5.5, which reads, Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, pleading with him, saying, Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented. And Jesus said to him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof, but only speak a word, and my servant will be healed, for I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. When Jesus heard it, he marveled and said to those who followed, Surely I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel. Then Jesus said to the centurion, Go your way, as you have believed, so let it be done for you. And his servant was healed that same hour. Did you see it? This centurion confessed he was a sinner, yet believed that if Jesus spoke the word, his servant, who was in much pain and on whom he had compassion, could and would be healed.
