Good morning, I'm Laura Devoy. Time is quickly running out for voters who are yet to apply for a postal vote. Shannon Kirkwood has the details. The Australian Electoral Commission says the legislative deadline for postal vote applications is tomorrow, the 30th of April. Although the AEC says anyone leaving it to the final week risks their postal vote pack not arriving in time. Those who don't receive a postal vote pack by Friday should make arrangements to vote in person on Election Day. More than 2 million postal vote packs have already been distributed. The AEC is reminding those who can turn up to a voting centre to do so. Pre-polling centres are open until Friday evening. Election Day is on Saturday. 18 million Australians are registered to vote in this federal election. While Australia counts down to its federal election on Saturday, Canadians are going to the polls today. It comes at a crucial time in Canada's relationship with the US. Donald Trump has repeatedly called for Canada to be made his country's 51st state. The incumbent Prime Minister Mark Carney has only been in the job for six weeks following the resignation of Justin Trudeau. He faces stiff opposition in Conservative leader Pierre Polyev. While some votes have already been counted, results won't be released until after the last polls close, which is at 3pm Australian Eastern Time. Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine next week to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany. But the move has been criticised by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, who says Russia has consistently rejected ceasefire proposals put forward by Kyiv and the US. He says there is no reason to wait until the 8th of May. Back home, a small bone found in Victoria three decades ago has led to questions about the origins of some Australian mammals. Until now, it was believed echidnas and platypuses descended from a land-bound ancestor, with the platypus becoming semi-aquatic over time. Researchers from the University of New South Wales led analysis of the bone. They found the mammals may have actually evolved from a water-dwelling ancestor. They say it's extremely rare for semi-aquatic mammals to give up the water, but they now believe that's what happened with echidnas. An amateur cyclist will today reach the end of the four-month mark in a year-long mission to raise awareness about dementia. Nicholas Tremaine, whose mother has been diagnosed with dementia, is in Queensland's Airlie Beach. He's cycled just over 15,000 kilometres since January 1st. His goal? To cycle 40,000 kilometres around Australia. Mr Tremaine says so far, the road surface has been better than anticipated. They probably need to come to Kangaroo Island and check out some of our roads, because at least getting told all the roads up this way have been pretty rough on the wet season, but so far I've been pretty happy with them. There have been a few little sections I've had to try and avoid, but otherwise I'm pretty happy. Dementia is the second leading cause of death of all Australians. Turning to sport, in the AFL, North Melbourne will challenge a three-game suspension handed to forward Paul Curtis. The 22-year-old was cited for rough conduct in last weekend's loss to Port Adelaide. Carlton's Adam Serra has been handed a one-match ban for striking, while Hawthorne's Jack Ginnivan has avoided suspension for kicking. And in tennis, matches at the Madrid Open were postponed overnight due to the power outage sweeping Spain and Portugal. Alex Dimonol is now scheduled to play tonight. Brian White, 82 years old, lives with Parkinson's disease and he's doing the Great Wheelbarrow Race up in Mareeba, Mareeba through to Dindula. I think it's about 120 kilometers with a wheelbarrow pushing it over 3 days.
