The Empower Hour is back for 2025 with a special guest from Esteem Care Services. They discuss disability advocacy and social media. The show also plays Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" and promotes safe driving. Good morning. I'm Laura Devoy. Western Australia's peak environmental body has accused the state's gas industry of gross negligence after Santos was fined for an oil spill. An oil pipeline rupture caused about 25,000 litres of oil condensate to be released into the Indian Ocean off the Pilbara coast in March 2022. Santos pleaded guilty and was yesterday fined $10,000 in order to pay court costs of almost the same amount. In a statement, the Conservation Council of WA says the ruling highlights the risk of catastrophic oil spills and is another example of the oil and gas industry getting away with trashing WA's nature for the lowest possible price. Canine hookworms are becoming increasingly resistant to drugs across Australia. Benzimidol-based dewormers are commonly given to dogs to treat gastrointestinal parasites, but researchers from the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney have found almost 70% of hookworm samples studied showed genetic mutations that can cause drug resistance. They say it's an urgent issue for pest and public health, as hookworms can cause anemia and malnutrition in dogs and disease in humans. Sydney rail commuters are facing more disruption after rail unions scheduled a new round of industrial action. The protected action includes reducing speed limits and bans working with contractors and would start next Wednesday and last for three days. The rail union says it's part of a bid to resume negotiations that broke down as workers threatened to upend New Year's Eve festivities. The union and the NSW government have been locked in a pay dispute for months. The Prime Minister has wished the outgoing Canadian PM Justin Trudeau well after he announced his resignation. Mr Trudeau will step down from his position as soon as the governing Liberal party elects a new leader. He's been Prime Minister for nearly a decade, but has faced increasing pressure from both within and outside of his party in recent weeks. Speaking to Channel Nine, Anthony Albanese said he's enjoyed a good relationship with Mr Trudeau. Justin Trudeau I regard as a friend, and I wish him well. He has served Canada well for a long period of time as a long term Prime Minister there in Canada. Firefighters have extinguished a blaze in a grandstand at Melbourne's iconic Caulfield racecourse. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6.30 this morning. No one was injured, but the extent of the damage is not yet clear. Police have established a crime scene and fire is being treated as suspicious. Overseas, Taiwan says the number of cyber attacks on its territory by China doubled last year, averaging 2.4 million attacks per day. The BBC's Celia Hatton has more. China views nearby Taiwan as part of its territory and has stepped up its strategy to reclaim the democratically governed island. Taiwanese authorities say they've fended off most of the cyber attacks on the island's defence, telecommunications and transport networks. But Taipei says those attacks are becoming more sophisticated, raising the question of how long Taiwan can continue to thwart them. The cyber attacks fall into China's grey zone tactics that increase pressure on Taiwan and exhaust its resources without actually declaring war. Turning to sports, in tennis the Nasi Tokenakis is through to the second round of the Adelaide International after a three set win over Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka. Christopher O'Connell and James Duckworth won their matches in straight sets while Adam Walton beat fellow Aussie Winky Hitchikata in three. And included in there is a chat with returning guest Raven to the regular listeners out there. You remember from Raven from I think it was October last year, he came in and told us about life that he lives in his shoes. And he's back now that he's got a job with Esteem Care Services. So we will be chatting with him. And yeah, talking about his social media journey and life as a disability advocate. So we've got all that to look forward to to enter into 2025. And that's gonna be happening over the next 50 minutes or so. But first DJ, let's start off the new year with a show stopping track. What have we got coming up first, dude? Groovy. Up first, we're bringing you an anthem of resilience and hope. Here's Kendrick Lamar's Grammy winning track that became a... Sensation, a rallying cry for a generation perhaps? This is Alright. All my life I had to fight. All my life I. Hard times like God. Bad trips like God. Nazareth, I'm fucked up, homie, you fucked up. But if God got us then we gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. Can you hear me? Can you feel me? We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. Can you hear me? Can you feel me? We gon' be alright. And when I wake up, I recognize you looking at me for the pay cut. But how much longer looking at you from the face now? I'm like 11, need some room with the face now. Give me, now let me tell you about my life. Painkillers only put me in a twilight. With pretty bitches and it's a highlight. Now tell my mama I love her, but this what I like. Lord knows, 20 of them in my Chevy, tell them all to come and get me, reaping everything I sow. So my karma come and have me no preliminary hearing. So my record, I'm gonna be dancing in silence for the record. Tell the world I know it's too late. Cause God, I think I'm gon' break it. Trying to sound my face, it's all day. But you see what I say. When you know, we've been nerving down before. When our pride was low, looking at the world like, where do we go? And we hate poor, poor. When the killer's dead in the street for sure. I'm at the peak just so. My knees getting weak and my gun might blow, but we gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. If you hear me, do you feel me? We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. If you hear me, do you feel me? We gon' be alright. If you hear me, do you feel me? We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. I can reach you. That's all, that's all, that's all, that's all, that's all. You can't keep me, I got something back for y'all. I rap, I'm black, I'm tracks, I rap for sure. My rights, my wrongs, I write till I'm right with God. And you know, we've been hurt, been down before. You can hear me, you can feel me, we gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. We gon' be alright. You can hear me, you can feel me, we gon' be alright. I can reach you. That's all, that's all, that's all, that's all, that's all. You can't keep me, I got something back for y'all. No need to talk to people. You can take it or not take it. I'll be right in your face. Those nights in my brain. I'm Devlin Mariah and you're listening to Chance FM 89.1. Would you speed up to someone and then tailgate them while walking? Come on, come on, come on, come on. Would you get frustrated walking behind a toddler? Come on, Vernon. Would you text while using the power tool? If you wouldn't do it anywhere else, why do it on the road? Don't let a car change who you are. Safer driving starts with you. Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra. Hey, swingers. I've been laid off from work, my rent is due. I can't go, need brand new shoes. So I went to the bank to see what they could do. They said, no, it looks like that love's got a hold on you. But it's too tight to make up. I can't get an unemployment pension. But it's too tight to make up. I went to my brother to see what he could do. He said, brother, I'd like to help you, but I'm unable to. So I called my father, father, oh, my father. But it's too tight to make up. Oh, my hand, my hand, my hand. But it's too tight to make up. I can't even qualify for my pension. We're talking about breaking up. Oh, down in the country. And that's an old kind of despair. From down on Capitol Hill we tried it. But it's too tight to make up. I said. But it's too tight to make up. Oh, money, money, money, money. We're talking about money, money. We're talking about money, money. We're talking about money, money. We're talking about money, money. We're talking about money, money. We're talking about money, money. We're talking about money, money, money, money, money. We're talking about the jealousy. And that old man that's over the hill. Now what are we all to do when money's got a hold on you? But it's too tight to make up. Oh, money, money, money, money. But it's too tight to make up. Oh, money, money, money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. Did the earth move for you, man? Did the earth move for you, man? Did the earth move for you, man? Did the earth move for you, man? But it's too tight to make up. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. I'm talking about money, money. So I got to kind of play a part in that transitional phase and bringing new life into the business which was absolutely amazing. It really was like a new dawn I think you could say and there was a real energy in the room when we first started in the sense that we're bringing something new to the disability sector and to the wider Cairns business community. Yes, that's great that you're back in. Sorry, I'm a bit distracted there because you can obviously hear that the mics aren't quite there at the moment. Give me a sec. What I'm going to do is Laura, I'm going to get you to swivel your mic over to, yeah that's it, and Jess just swivel your mic over to Laura for a minute and here we go. We play our musical chairs. Raven? Can you hear me now? Oh my God, that's so much better. I think the mic might actually be the one next to me. Technical difficulties, okay. I've done that so many times myself. Alright, here we go, let's give it one more try. Give that one a go, Raven. Did we make it? We've made it. We've made it. Okay, musical mics back to the original owners please. There we are. Wow, what a way to start. What a way to start the show. So yes, Raven, back into the workforce for us, took a little while out there, didn't you? I did, I had about I'm going to call it a new gap year because the gap year that I had last year in 24 was not exactly a gap year, but I took, yeah, gap year worked on myself after my last role at ABC Radio, I really did just need that year to kind of reset. I've grown so much, and yeah when we started with the STEAM care, there was a real energy in the room when Laura and Harvey got there, and we all kind of sat there. We knew that this was going to be the beginning of something big, I think you could say, and I think Laura was very excited. There was a real energy of something new, something different, and something that was really going to benefit care. So yeah, I hear that STEAM care has gone through a bit of a transition recently. Laura, I'm going to move over to you for a minute because we're just going to, can you tell us a little bit more about STEAM care and the services you provide, and are you a nationwide business, or are you a local business? I believe you focus in Queensland mainly, is that right? Yeah, so we're in Melbourne, Brisbane, and here in Cairns currently, and not ruling out any further growth we might. Harvey and I came at a STEAM I would say the end of November? Yes. So I was mid-November, you guys were mid-November, am I right? Yes. So Tavi came on as a new manager at STEAM care services as to my role as a little bit of all sorts. I came on board to do business development but now I'm the in-between of it all at STEAM. And I love it, and both of us have worked in disability a long time, but also I personally live with this at home with my children. I've worked in this as a support worker for many years. So that would have sort of segwayed you into this position pretty nicely, right? Yes, it did. And I always had dreams of something new and fresh and different. And one of the things that I found really important is not to just say we're inclusive, but to be inclusive. And that's our biggest. Most of our staff have disabilities. We are way over 50%. Wow, okay. 50%? Yeah. Oh, fantastic. And the aim is to be 85% at the bare minimum. Wow. That's amazing. So the services that STEAM care provides, you provide support coordination, you actually provide support in-home. What other services do you provide? So we have a property. We do indeed community access, in-home care, support coordination, anything you can think of. So there might be some listeners out there who aren't aware of what a SEAL property is. Yeah, so it's supported independent living. So our participants live in a home and our workers support them in being able to live by themselves. Okay, right. That makes sense. There's many SEAL houses around the country. Oh yes, there's so many. Sometimes I wonder if there's more houses than we have participants nowadays. Yeah. Yeah, that could be true for a couple of spaces out there, not just the SEAL space but other ones as well. But okay, amazing. And how did Raven's employment with the STEAM care come about? How did that... Was it love at first resume or what was it? I think it started when I first worked as a support coordinator and I was at the STEAM and I was Raven's support coordinator for a little while and then one day he came in for a visit and he was like I'm looking for a job and we were like alright, well we'll find you something. So it actually started with that but it actually started before that. So I was approached by our former manager and she said hey, we're looking for a social media expert. By this stage I'd already taken another role and I was like nah, I'm happy doing what I'm doing but thank you, good luck guys. A few things happened in the weeks prior to that and I remember saying to one of my good friends I think I'm going to have to go back and beg for this job and I remember my friend was like good luck with that and we all kind of said and I remember having this conversation with so many people, oh they're probably just going to laugh in your face because you turned it down the first time. And I remember asking the GM for that meeting and that whole weekend I was like, I remember I DM'd her on Instagram and I'm like hey can we talk and she was like yeah, I didn't say what I wanted to talk about and I remember I was like oh my god, oh my god, what's going to happen, what's going to happen, what's going to happen and I remember we went into what we call the therapies room now and we sat down and we had the meeting and she was like so what do you want to talk about she thought I wanted to move into a silk I think she thought that I'd like burn my bridges at home and needed to get out of there because she's like so do we want to talk about a silk then I'm like no I need a job and she goes awesome we'll work it out and you can start hopefully in a few weeks and I'm like wow, because I undervalued myself to a point after the last couple bad experiences that I'd had with employment I undervalued myself to a point where I believed that they were almost going to be doing me a favour by employing me because with the disability employment system in Australia that's how you're made to feel that they get paid to have you and they're doing you a favour so I spent a lot of time thinking that and then to be told hey no we actually really want you, I was like wow, and then a whole bunch of things happened the company went through some transitions I started about two ish months after that and then one day we just got told that Laura was coming and I was so excited I cried with excitement because Laura and Tavi and particularly Laura had this energy and it's an energy that a lot of people don't have but it's something that I do have, this excitement this, I think it's almost like an ADHD energy and it's something that Laura's nodding away over there it's something that I don't find a lot of the time in corporate life, it's very hard to find and when you find two bosses that embrace this energy and bring it to the table it's really special and I've been there ever since it's one of the best jobs I've ever had in fact it's the best job that I've ever had, I don't get phone calls in the middle of the night I don't get stories on weekends I don't get random emails at four in the morning being like there's been a bush fire, we need someone to cover which is what I got a lot of my other jobs this is back in your radio days it's been really interesting bringing that radio perspective into disability because I'm always looking for the next story and the next thing that's going to go bang NDIS, I'm always looking for what's happening in the NDIS space I can predict things before they happen which is really handy, sometimes I'll say to Laura, I think this is going to happen and she'll go I don't know, and then like a week later it'll be on the news and we'll be like predicted it well I want to know next week's lottery numbers if that's alright Raven that'd be great so I wanted to quickly touch back on what you said about being somebody who lives with a disability and feeling that way about employment and about how that feeling of the employer doing you a favour by giving you a job, you see it a lot in the media that employers are paying $3 on the hour how are there any other jobs that you've had that you felt that you're there based on your merits rather than them being given some supplementary money because they've hired you so when you say my merits is there any other jobs where I feel like I'm not just there because they've been given money so I'm really fortunate in that the experiences I've had with employment have been fairly positive but what we see a lot is employment agencies trying to railroad people with disabilities into jobs where there's a bonus program so one of my biggest experiences was just coming out of COVID in 2020, 2021 a very large department store in Australia was running a program with one of the disability employment providers to get people into work and I already had a job, I was working in the disability sector and the employment agency rang me up and they're like we want you to do two days a week at Kmart greeting on the door and I'm like why and they're like but I'm like why and they're like because there's a program and there's money in it and I'm like why? I have a job I'm happy and they're like yeah but there's money in it and I'm like they're like we've got this big initiative and everyone knows what I'm talking about, this initiative was plastered all over Facebook I wasn't going to mention the name but it was all over Facebook, it still is now they're still using a lot of the ads and stuff because it was such a big initiative it's one of the biggest initiatives I've ever seen, it went right across Australia but I've never seen anything like that and we see it a lot, last year during my gap year I was actually invited to work in what you'd call a pyramid scheme and when I looked into it it was because the owner of the pyramid scheme was working with the provider and the employment provider and they were friends and I'm like how is this okay and they started wanting me to pay money into it and when I said no then my disability employment provider was like but why? We're giving you the opportunity to work and you're saying no so I was really shocked and that's when I started to realise that these federal government programs that are getting subbed out have a lot of issues with them It's nice that you're in the caring hands of Esteem Care Services. It's really been like a slow down moment for me because I came into the office like almost paranoid about what was going to go wrong because I've had so many bad experiences elsewhere. I remember on my first day I set up a filing cabinet system where everything that I did I was printing out and I was filing and I was keeping it for an audit that no one had ever told me about that didn't exist that I'd imagined in my head was going to exist because I was waiting for it and then suddenly I started to realise that nothing's going to go wrong and I've had some bad experiences elsewhere but no one's out to get me so to speak because when you have three or four failed employment experiences which is what I had over the last couple of years where people say hey we want to employ you but then you get there and it's voluntary or there's subcontracting or something just goes wrong it does something to your psyche and it does something to you as a person which sounds kind of jaded but it changes the way that you see things. And you're still very young you know and you've had a lot of experiences in the employment space already with the adage of also living with a disability as well in the employment space you know it's a lot different to somebody who doesn't live with a disability I would imagine what we're going to do is we're going to play some more music and we're going to come back to the conversation very shortly DJ Jesse typically would introduce this but he's just gone off to the toilet so up next we have a hypnotic blend of electronic beats and soulful vocals we've played this one before on the show it's Joe Goddard with Gabriel and then after that we'll be coming back to talk to Raven and Laura a little bit more about Raven's social media influence and how his page is going but yeah this track is coming up next.
