The main points are: Angus Taylor, Susan Lee, and Dan Tien are potential leaders of the Liberal Party after Peter Dutton's loss. Victims of crime in NSW may receive notifications about offenders. The White House is considering foreign film tariffs. Renewable energy advocates want the coalition to reconsider energy policies. The Met Gala theme is inspired by Black Zandiism. The injury-hit Sydney Swans face a three-match ban. A radio show, Empower Hour, celebrates the disability community. DJ Jesse and Joe Alcott discuss their weekend and the show's content. They mention a fan they met and play music, including "She Looks Perfect" by Five Seconds of Summer. Temperature updates and ads are also featured. Good morning. I'm Laura Devoy. Angus Taylor, Susan Lee and Dan Tien are all in the running to be the next leader of the Liberal Party. The position was left vacant after Peter Dutton lost his seat in Saturday's election. Andrew Hastie was another person touted as a possible replacement but he ruled himself out of the leadership race yesterday. A date for the Liberal Party room where a new leader will be decided is yet to be set. David Littleproud is expected to remain leader of the Nationals. In NSW, victims of crime will be given the chance to receive notifications about their offender's progress through the custodial system. Legislation mandating a victim receive information about their rights to sign up as a registered victim survivor and be notified about their perpetrator's release will be introduced to State Parliament today. Premier Chris Minns foreshadowed the move late last year when a drug addict who had bashed a police officer and left her for dead in 2009 was released from prison. The victim was only informed days before the man was freed. Mr Minns said victims of crime advocates are supportive of the proposed changes. The White House says a final decision on foreign film tariffs has not yet been made. On social media, President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside of the US but he has since moved to clarify he'll talk to industry leaders first. A lot of it's been taken to other countries and a big proportion and I'm actually going to meet with some because, you know, there's some advantages I guess and I'm not looking to hurt the industry. I want to help the industry but they've given financing by other countries, they've given a lot of things and the industry was decimated. The Australian government and several states offer funding and incentives to productions filmed here. A community-based renewable energy organisation says it wants to see the coalition reassess its energy policies. Solar Citizens CEO Heidi Lee Douglas has told National Radio News before election results for the coalition is evidence Australians have rejected its nuclear energy policy. We really need for the coalition moving forward to have a deep look at themselves and why they've ignored rooftop solar owners across the country and to stop beating up on renewable energy. The coalition has not yet confirmed if it will recommit to its nuclear plan for Australia. Nuclear for Australia says its fight for nuclear power will continue saying the energy dilemma remains. The world's biggest fashion icons are arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for the annual Met Gala. This year's theme is superfine, tailoring black style. It's inspired by Monica L. Miller's book Slaves to Fashion, Black Zandiism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Actor Whoopi Goldberg told reporters she's glad it's taking centre stage. It's never been highlighted. So now it's highlighted and you're proud and you're proud and I'm proud and I'm really entirely proud and we're proud of the Met. Turning to sport, the injury-hit Sydney Swans have been dealt another blow with defender Lewis Mellican handed a three-match ban. The 28-year-old was cited for striking GWS' Toby Bedford during the Swans' win on Sunday. The incident was graded careless, severe impacts and high contact. The Swans are already without a number of star players due to long-term injuries. Mellicans was the only ban handed out for the weekend's matches with 21 players fined. My name is Joe and as always we are joined by superstar DJ himself, DJ Jesse everybody. You've got that right. I have got that right. We're here, we made it. It was a nail-biting arrival to the studio today. DJ Jesse and I were on our commute to the station down from Paranda and there was a crash on the range and we thought we may not make it today and we were at standstill for about 25 minutes on that range there and we were thinking well we might have to play a pre-recorded episode and we don't want to do that. But we made it in time, didn't we DJ Jesse? Yes. Yes, it was very close. Nail-biting stuff. We were still in the car when Cornell & Carr, being the band, started playing. Yes. That's not like us, is it? We're usually here prepping, ready to go, writing out your weather stuff. I know. So it could be a little bit messy today. Yes. Couldn't it? It could. You don't even know who's coming up first, do you? No. No. I'll figure that out for you shortly. How are you anyway, man? How was your weekend? It was really tiring. Really tiring? Well, what did you get up to that made it ever so tiring? Well... Some hard yakka from you, was it? No. No? What made it so tiring? Was it your late night at the Tanks? Yeah. Jesse went to see a band with his dad and Oshifa. What did you go see? Who did you go see? The Pad Boys. The Pad Boys? Yes. Where are they from? They're from Carrander. Oh, okay. They're from Carrander and they played at the Tanks, did they? Yes. Wonderful. And you got yourself some merch, didn't you? Yeah, I got a shirt and a record. You got a shirt and a vinyl. That's right. That's right. I got a photo of Jesse sent to me by Jesse wearing the T-shirt on Saturday afternoon, didn't I? Yeah. Yeah, that's right. We had an amazing instance on Friday. DJ Jesse and I were in the pharmacy and we were doing a health check on one of those bio-scan machines. And I was briefly doing mine after Jesse had done his. And Jesse has turned to the ladies at the counter, filling out the prescriptions and he's informed them that he's part of a radio show with his co-host here, Joe Alcott. You always like to introduce me with my first and second name, don't you, dude? Yeah. And he's telling them, yep, yep, I do a radio show every Tuesday with Joe Alcott. It's called the Empower Hour. And they asked, what's it about? And DJ Jesse asked me, what's it about? And I'm like, you know what it's about. And then he's like, oh, it's about disabilities. I'm like, that's right, it's about disabilities. And then a lady came over. Can you remember this, Jesse? Yep. A lady came over and she said, I listen to your show. And I was beside myself, obviously. It was the first instance we'd met a fan out in the street organically. You weren't too fussed, were you, DJ? No. No. But I was very happy with it. And the lady even said, oh, my favourite part is when he does the weather. How good is that? Yeah. So sorry if you're listening today, lady. I didn't catch your name. But yeah, no weather from DJ Jesse today because we simply didn't have time. So I'm sorry about that. But I can assure you, when we return after our three-week break, because we're going to have pre-recorded episodes, so we're not going to be able to do the weather because we don't know what the weather is. When we return, DJ Jesse will be back doing the weather, won't you, bro? Yeah. That's right. The minimum today is 32 degrees. Yeah. All right. Shoot for the people, some music. We've got a cool show coming up. We've got our disability news from around the world segment. I've got an amazing story out of Brazil that I want to tell you all about as well. First song coming up. Got any idea what it is? I have no idea. It's by a band called Five Seconds of Summer. Do you remember which song you chose? I can't remember. It's called She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. I know someone who looks perfect and it's Alana Rose. There it is. Is this one dedicated to Alana Rose? Yeah. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. She Looks Perfect by Five Seconds of Summer. The Empower Hour on Cairns FM 89.1. That was Westlife making promises they probably won't break. Swear it again signing off. Smooth and sentimental. You know what? Westlife was the first single I ever bought. Flying Without Wings. You bought a single? I bought a single, yeah, when I was about, I think I was about ten. And I loved Westlife. And Flying Without Wings was the song of the time. And I bought it on a cassette tape. I think I know what the, one of the members from that group. Yeah, which one? Brian McFadden. Brian McFadden? He, he married an Australian, didn't he? Yeah, he did. What was her name? Hmm. It's Delta, isn't it? Yes. Delta Digim. Well, I don't remember Brian. I remember Brian, Mark, Shane, Keyan, the whole lot. Who am I forgetting there? There's one more. Anyway. I wanted to talk to you about a story that I saw the other day on Instagram. It's a bit of an older story. It's from 2019, but it's amazing. It's the story of the Ferreira Pinto brothers, Miguel and Pedro. And it's a profound testament to the unbreakable bond of brotherhood and the relentless pursuit of dreams against all odds. Another Westlife song, interestingly enough. Pedro was born with cerebral palsy and he harbored a dream that many deemed unattainable. He wished to compete in an Ironman triathlon. Now, for those who don't know what an Ironman triathlon is, we host one here in Cairns every year. It's a grueling test of endurance that includes a three, I think three or four kilometer swim, 100 maybe kilometer bike ride, and then a full marathon afterwards. So Pedro's brother, Miguel, he's a dedicated lawyer and a triathlete. He was determined to turn his brother's dream into reality. So in 2019, they embarked on this very ambitious journey, founding the Iron Brothers Project. And their mission extended beyond personal achievement. They aim to raise awareness and support for individuals with cerebral palsy and collaborate with the Association of Cerebral Palsy of Lisbon to fund the essential equipment for families in need. And their dedication culminated at Ironman Brazil, where amidst all these overwhelming challenges, they crossed the finish line together. It doesn't say exactly how long it took for them here, but there are some amazing images of Miguel and Pedro, Miguel pushing his brother over the finish line and then having an embrace. And you can just see the emotion on their faces. You can imagine he obviously has to assist his younger brother with absolutely everything. So even the four kilometer swim, his brother's being towed by him on a dinghy, and then the specialist instrument that they use on the bike, and then he pushes him in this car. It's just the most phenomenal bit of footage. You can find out and you can watch it yourself if you go to Instagram, at Iron Brothers Triathlon. And it's got a full library of their photographs and images from that event. I believe they're still going. I believe they're trying to compete in some more. But yeah, I got sent this the other day and I thought I've got to share it because it's just the most wonderful bit of footage. And it really all culminates into that image of him crossing over the finish line, pushing his brother, and then embracing it. It's really amazing. So if you get the chart, if this has piqued your interest and you do want to go and see some feel-good, some wholesome footage right now, head over to Instagram, at Iron Brothers Triathlon. And you can see the footage of Pedro and Miguel doing their bits at Iron Man Brazil. Amazing. There's another Iron Man coming up here in not too long. I don't think I'll ever be competing in that, but I wonder if anybody locally who lives with a disability takes part in the Iron Man. If you do know somebody who lives with a disability and takes part in our local Iron Man, let us know and we'll get them on the show and have a chat about how amazing and challenging that must be. Because it's challenging enough being able-bodied, let alone living with a physical disability as well. That must be incredible, hey Jess? Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, what's coming up next brother? Have we got another song? Now... Now here's something silky and sweet. Dee Dee Bridges. Ooh. Featuring Nuna. Yeah, nice. For this dreamy track, let the vibe flow with Silk Chiffon. Ooh. Find out and feel lifted. Downtown cherry lifted. Watch your silk dress dancing in the wind. Watch it brush against your skin. Makes me want to try it on. Like life's so fun, life's so fun. Got my miniskirt and my rollerblades on. Stay on my side cause I'm up till dawn. Keeping it light like Silk Chiffon. Life's so fun, life's so fun. Don't need a worry if I'm the one. Don't try to feel anxious. Inside the TV. When she turns around, stops without me. I'm inside yours. And it's hard for you to turn me on. Like life's so fun, life's so fun. Got my miniskirt and my rollerblades on. Stay on my side cause I'm up till dawn. Keeping it light like Silk Chiffon. Life's so fun, life's so fun. Don't need a worry if I'm the one. These are seen particularly in that early childhood stage where heightened awareness among parents and educators already existed even in the 1970s. And likewise, it's a global trend. It's not happening just in the US. So, if it's a global trend, I would imagine that other countries may not keep up with diagnosing in the same way or at least with the data as Western countries perhaps. And it doesn't really go into what is causing it, but one of the things that could lead to it is environmental and epigenetic factors, environmental contributors. Whether it be exposure to toxins, pollutions, our diets, what we intake has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. What we consume on a weekly basis is a far cry from what we used to consume in regards to vegetables and unprocessed foods. So, I think regardless of what you may think about, like I said, the current administration, I really believe that this work that is going into understanding this rise in chronic disease within children is some really important work. And there are some key objectives from this commission that has been put forward. It's called the Make America Healthy Again Commission. Comprehensive assessment, tasked with producing a detailed report within 100 days, focusing on the prevalence and causes of chronic disease in children. And the areas of focus include nutrition, physical activity, environmental exposures, medication usage, and technological habits to understand that impact as well on children's health. And it's a concerted effort by the U.S. administration to address the growing concern of chronic disease in children. And you can find out more information. Head over. I'm sure if you can just type in Maha Commission, you'll find it. But it's interesting. And we'll be following it closely here on the show. But before we do that, we've got some more music. DJ Jesse, what's coming up next, brother? Inform the people. Tell the people. Coming up now, an emotional powerhouse that is keen. Yes. That's his job. That's his job. Got the tissues for somewhere. Only we know. Oh, yeah. That's his job. I walked across an empty land. I knew the path was like the back of my hand. I felt the earth beneath my feet. Sat by the river and it made me complete. Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting older, man. It's something to rely on. So tell me when you're gonna let me in. I'm getting tired, man. It's somewhere to begin. I'd seen a car upon a tree. I felt the front shield probably looking at me. Is this the place we used to love? Is this the place that I've been dreaming of? Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting older, man. It's something to rely on. So tell me when you're gonna let me in. I'm getting tired, man. It's somewhere to begin. And if you have a minute, why don't we go? Don't you believe somewhere only we know? This could be the end of everything. So why don't we go somewhere only we know? Somewhere only we know. So why don't we go? So why don't we go? Oh, this could be the end of everything. So why don't we go somewhere only we know? Somewhere only we know. Somewhere only we know. You know, the flu can be passed around as easily as a footy can. The smoke from the ceiling comes through my door. And the whole world turns blue. The thunder and the fire across the railroad tracks. The table for two. The weight in my back. I feel alone. As each lives in you. I've spent most every night beneath the light of a neon moon. Now you look, you're one and only. There's a window here for the lonely. But you're broken every day. Standing out of the window of a neon moon. I think of the young lovers. Running wild and free. I close my eyes. And sometimes think. Of you through the shadows. Of this mobile room. How many tears. I've sat in and cried. How many times. That I've lied. Till I'm no more. You come back someday. But I'll be around. As long as the light from a neon moon. Now you look, you're one and only. There's a window here for the lonely. But you're broken every day. Standing out of the window of a neon moon. The jukebox plays on. The drinks I drink. The words to be satisfied. Seem to say what I think. And the time inside of me. Ain't never gonna end. Oh. Oh, but I'll be alright. As long as the light from a neon moon. Now you look, you're one and only. There's a window here for the lonely. But you're broken every day. Standing out of the window of a neon moon. How much you're broken every day. Standing out of the window of a neon moon. J-Man? Um, who was that? I don't know. You don't know? I thought you were going around down in front of me. That was Misha. Oh, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go. Okay, sorry. Misha crying under that neon moon. Beautiful reimagining with heart and soul. That is a really nice song. Yeah. I've never heard it before, but I really like that. Where did you find that one? I didn't find it.
