Good morning, this is David Cameron with the following news updates. A memorial service will be held for two sailors who died during the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Queensland Police are urging motorists to change their driving habits after a rise in road accidents. Professor Janet Bray suggests implementing CPR training in schools as a potentially life-saving strategy. Hot and dry conditions are expected in South Australia for New Year's Eve. The Australian men's cricket team has taken a 2-1 lead in the Bora Gavaskar Trophy. The weather forecast for Cairns includes temperatures reaching a maximum of 33 degrees with light winds. Tune in to the Empower Hour on Cairns FM 89.1 for empowering stories and music. Good morning, I'm David Cameron. A memorial service will be held this morning for two sailors who died during this year's Sydney to Hobart yacht race. Roy Cordon and Nick Smith died in separate incidents at sea early in the race. Speaking to the ABC, Cruising Yacht Club of Australia Commodore Sam Haynes says it's deeply affected the sailing community. Our condolences go to the families of Roy and Nick. It has subdued the celebrations and has been something that's been on the sailing community's mind for the end of this race. Members of the public are invited to attend the memorial at Constitution Dock in Hobart at 11.30 local time. There will also be a live stream. Queensland Police have called on motorists to change their driving habits after the state's road toll rose to its highest in 15 years. Police say 95 per cent of fatal road accidents involve at least one of five deadly factors, speeding, drink or drug driving, fatigue, distraction or not wearing seatbelts. Queensland's Transport Minister Brent Nickelberg is urging drivers to take care over the New Year period. Look after your mates, get home safely, have a good night, do it in a safe way and use the free public transport that will be on offer. We know that many, many of those deaths are related to drink driving and we need to avoid that at all costs. And the safest way to do that is to use the services that are available at the transport. A national approach to CPR training in schools would be a potentially life-saving strategy. Heart Foundation Fellow and preventative health expert Professor Janet Bray says it's often up to individual schools to decide if they'll offer CPR training. Every year in Australia more than 26,000 people suffer cardiac arrest out of hospital. Professor Bray says there's mounting evidence of the value of training. We're providing CPR training in every year of school. It provides an entire generation of lifesavers essentially and we know that CPR training improves the willingness to provide CPR to someone who needs it as well as the precision of CPR to someone who needs it. South Australians can expect hot and dry conditions across the state for New Year's Eve. In the Northern Territory a hot day with some showers and storms possible is Senior Forecaster Miriam Bradbury. Clear skies are forecast as daytime temperatures set to reach the mid-30s to low 40s inland, high 20s to low 30s along the coastal fringe. For the New Year's Eve celebrations in Adelaide conditions will be clear and warm with generally light southerly winds. Midnight temperatures are expected to be in the high teens. Across the Northern Territory New Year's Eve will be a hot day with low to severe intensity heatwaves across northern and central parts. Showers and thunderstorms are possible across western and northern parts of the Top End and may bring gusty winds at times. For New Year's Eve celebrations in Darwin showers and storms should ease back through the evening but we could see some patchy wet weather lingering later on. By midnight it will still be humid with temperatures in the high 20s and partly cloudy skies. In sport the Australian men's cricket side is still savouring one of their greatest test wins before record crowds in Melbourne. Australia have taken a 2-1 lead in the Borda Gavaskar Trophy after a stunning last hour win against India. The fifth test in Sydney will see the Aussies looking for a win or draw to claim the trophy for the first time in a decade. You're welcome to pull your mic just a little bit closer to you all so we can hear your beautiful voice. There we go. Yeah. How are you mate? How was your trip? Goes alright. Goes alright? Yeah you have a nice Christmas? Yeah. Went down the water slide at Rivershore Junior Holiday Resort. Oh you went down a water slide? Yeah just on my stomach. On your belly? Yeah. Backwards. Backwards? Yeah. Was that the highlight of your Christmas? Yeah. One of them at least. Yeah. What did you do on Christmas Day? Did you... I celebrated Christmas with my cousin Jimmy. Cool. Who else? Was your mum there? Yeah my mum was there. Pam? Yeah Pam was there. Sarah was there. Great. Ash and Patrick and son Nolan was there. Oh nice. Naomi and Hans and their daughter Matilda were there. The whole gang? Emmie, Jimmy and two boys. Big crowd bro. Yes and Raf was there. Nice. Amazing. And what about food wise? Did you have a turkey? Did you have some ham? Yeah. Which one? Ham. Ham? And potato salad. Ham? Ham was Pam? Yeah. Nice man. And what about prezzies? What did you get? Got two new shirts. Nice. One of them says The Chosen and the other one is a name for Tennant Gardens and Bird World. Beautiful. So you are The Chosen One are you? Yes. Speaking of The Chosen One I've been on an absolute Harry Potter marathon this Christmas. Do you have a tradition of mine to watch Harry Potter over Christmas time? Which one? We started at number four. You know where he's got the big hair? What's number four? The Goblet of Fire. Yeah I saw that one. And then yeah we're up to number seven at the moment. Just cruising through them at the moment. Is that part one and two of The Deathly Hallows? Correct. I watched Wicked with my girlfriend. Oh you went to the cinema with Erin? Yes. Nice. Just you and her? Yes. Oh cool. Where did you sit? At the back? In the middle? At the front. At the front. Yep. And I had grilled. Oh grilled burger? Yeah. Oh man that's why you've had an amazing Christmas. Yeah. It was an amazing day here for Christmas day. It was a really beautiful day weather wise. So I managed to get to the creek for my Christmas day. What creek was that? Stoney's. You know the one that we used to go to? Ah yeah. Yeah we went there. Had a big full English breakfast in the morning for Christmas breakfast. So you went to Stoney's Creek with? I went with Jazz. Which part of the creek you went to? The bit that we usually go to. Cool. Yeah. And then came home? It was kind of really difficult climbing on those rocks. Ah it wasn't too slippery. No it was okay. Anyway. Yeah. It was a beautiful day on Christmas day. Like a beautiful day today. Look at it out there. Last day of the year. Yeah. Gorgeous weather. Yeah. We've been lucky. Much better than last year. My dad just bought me a doll from Ebay. One of my favourite characters from Puzzle. Cool. Wow. What an end of the year for you. Yeah and there's one more coming. Okay. Well we're going to do a little round up of our year very shortly on the show. We're going to talk about some of our favourite moments. Yeah. But first should we give them a song? Should we give the listener a song? Yeah. Okay what's coming up first dude? This first song is a timeless classic from 2002. Vanessa Colton's A Thousand Miles became an instant hit. Featured in countless movies and shows. Known for its iconic piano riff. Oh yes. It was her debut single and even earned her Grammy nominations. Let's take a thousand mile journey together. Let's do it. Oh yes. These songs are for my girlfriend. Shout out Erin. From Mercy. And I need you. And I miss you. And now I wonder. If I could fall into the sky. So you'd think time would pass me by. Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles. I could just see you. A thousand miles. Though it sounds like me. Think of you. And I wonder if you ever think of me. Cause everything's so wrong. I don't belong. I'm living in your precious memory. And I need you. And I miss you. And now I wonder. If I could fall into the sky. So you'd think time would pass me by. Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles. I could just see you. I could just see you. I could just see you. And now I don't want to let you know. I don't belong in your memory. And I don't want to let this go. And I, I don't. Making my way downtown. Walking south. Faces pass and I'm homebound. And I'd like to have you making my way. Making my way to the ground. And I still need you. I still miss you. And now I wonder. If I could fall into the sky. So you'd think time would pass us by. Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles. I could just see you. If I could fall into the sky. So you'd think time would pass me by. Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles. I could just see you. I could just hold you now. Thank you for choosing Cairns FM 89.1. Would you speed up to someone and then tailgate them while walking? Come on, come on, come on, come on. Would you get frustrated walking behind a toddler? Oh, Bernard. Would you text while using the power tool? If you wouldn't do it anywhere else, why do it on the road? Don't let a car change who you are. Safer driving starts with you. Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra. Hey swingers, I'm Judge from Straight on the Beach. I've got my own ad, I don't need Chris.
