A survey shows that there is a need for better support services in schools for teenagers with diverse sexualities and gender identities. Australia's new vaping laws seem to be reducing the number of children vaping. A ban on a UN body in the Middle East could prevent humanitarian aid from reaching Palestinians. Victoria is proposing new laws to reduce traumatic cross-examination for victims of sexual assault. Health experts highlight the importance of recognizing secondary skin conditions related to psoriasis. Spain's Aitana Bonmati and Rodri have won the Ballon d'Or. The weather in the city is currently 27.8 degrees with a maximum of 31 degrees expected. Good morning, I'm Laura Dubois. Researchers say there's an urgent need for better support services in schools with more than one in ten teens identifying as gay, bisexual, pansexual or asexual. Remy Norton reports. A survey of more than 6,000 Year 8 students between 2019 and 2021 found 12% of them reported diverse sexualities, more than 3% identified as gender diverse. Teens who identified as transgender or non-binary were also twice as likely to have a disability or mental health diagnosis. Dr Jennifer Marino from the University of Sydney says the survey shows a need for child health policies at school that provide inclusion and support of diverse gender identities and sexualities. Medical authorities say Australia's new vaping laws seem to be having a positive effect on children. In July, new vaping laws restricted the sale of vapes to pharmacies and four weeks ago a requirement to have a prescription to purchase vapes was dropped in all jurisdictions except Western Australia and Tasmania. Dr Danielle McMullen is the president of the Australian Medical Association. She told the ABC early feedback indicates the new changes have led to a reduction in the number of children vaping. The news from school principals and parents is that they are seeing far fewer children vaping in schools and we are seeing that it's harder for kids and young people to get their hands on vapes which of course is our primary goal. There are fears a ban on a UN body in the Middle East could prevent humanitarian aid from reaching Palestinians in need. Israel's parliament has passed two controversial bills to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees and declare it a terrorist organisation. They make it illegal for Israeli officials to deal with UNRWA which won't be able to legally operate in Israel and will be a declared terrorist organisation in the country. The bill has been heavily criticised with fears it could make it near impossible to get any humanitarian aid into Gaza and the West Bank. UNRWA says it's outrageous that a member state of the United Nations is working to dismantle a UN agency. Sexual assault, family violence and stalking victims would no longer have to endure traumatic cross-examination early in court cases or testify multiple times under a proposed legal shake-up in Victoria. The state government is set to introduce legislation today designed to reduce stress and trauma. Under the proposed changes victims would still have to give evidence but not at committal hearings. The Justice Legislation Amendment Bill would also allow children and people with cognitive impairments to give pre-recorded video evidence. Health experts are using World Psoriasis Day today to highlight the importance of recognising secondary skin conditions related to the inflammatory skin disease. A survey found nearly two-thirds of Australian adults have suffered a skin condition and nearly 30% said they'd never seen a dermatologist and don't plan on doing so. Dr. Annika Smith from the Skin Hospital says conditions like psoriasis can be more than they appear. So we now understand that the abnormal skin inflammation drives systemic inflammation and this can impact on other organs. So there's about a two times increased risk of myocardial infarction which is heart attack and stroke and this is particularly so in patients with severe disease. Turning to sports, Spain's Aitana Bonmati and Rodri have won the Men's and Women's Ballon d'Or. The award is given annually to those judged to be the best footballers in the world. Real Madrid was named the Men's Club of the Year while Barcelona won the Women's Award at a ceremony in Paris. Really? Electric Light Orchestra? Yeah, that song was dedicated to the one and only Kieran Hansen who is listening Okay, there you go Kieran Big shout out Yeah, I had no idea that was produced by ELO It's crazy Sounds about right though Sounds very similar I have never seen the film But I am aware of the poem By Samuel Coleridge Have you seen the film? Don't think so But I'll get it on DVD Okay, yeah What about the poem? Samuel Coleridge In Kubla Khan What's the poem with that? It's called Kubla Khan By Samuel Coleridge Ummm Talks about Xanadu From Xanadu to Kubla Khan The stately dome, pleasure dome decree I've never heard of your poem No, don't worry about it Anyway, so last week on the show We were joined by the man, the myth, the legend Jonas Lutke He's a local guy who lives with quadriplegia After a skydiving accident a few years back He now runs Cairns Kite School And some Lego clay classes each week At Spinal Life Which I hear his first one on Sunday went very well So well that in fact he's setting up shop in the pier So we'll loop back in with him And I'll give you some more details of that as we go We had an amazing chat last week here in the studio And if you missed it It's up online at audio.com forward slash empower hour It's there already I've been very organised and proactive over the last week Anyway, Jonas and I were chatting I mentioned the Perry Cross Foundation Which sounded absolutely amazing So I did a little bit more research And the Perry Cross Foundation Led by Perry Cross A C2 quadriplegic Is driving an incredible breakthrough In spinal cord injury research Happening right here in Queensland At Griffith University Perry was just 19 when a rugby accident in 1994 Left him paralysed from the neck down Unable to move or breathe on his own Despite this He's dedicated his life to finding a cure for paralysis The foundation's pioneering research in cellular therapy Aims to regenerate damaged nerves And restore function for people with spinal cord injuries One of their key achievements Is the development of a nasal stem cell treatment Showing promising preclinical results This innovation could transform treatment options And offer real possibilities for recovery and independence The Perry Cross Foundation Also focuses on improving quality of life Through support programmes and advocacy And with larger clinical trials on the horizon Hope is growing for a brighter future Perry's relentless drive to find a cure Continues to inspire the disability community And his foundation leads the charge Towards life changing progress If you would like to support this vital research Donations can be made at PCSRF.ORG.AU Every contribution brings us closer to a cure For spinal cord injuries An amazing initiative DJ Jesse What's track number 3 today? Released in 2001, this track continues Shaggy's laid back style Blending reggae with smooth R&B influences It's a song about staying true to yourself And it's got that unrespectable Shaggy vibe Catch you all next week guys See you next week guys, take care, goodbye When I was younger I used to dream of being rich Had a lot of houses and cars, couldn't know which one to pitch And part of me is just in getting rich Living the fairy tale life, perfect without a ditch You think that this will bring me happiness It's at the end of every rainbow there was a treasure chest Sometimes having more is really less Take a look inside yourself, you'll realize you're really blessed No matter how you have it built There's always someone who has it worse than you Sometimes you gotta bear your guilt So don't worry, just push on through Gotta dig up all my people who've been working all their futures Or they know they gotta struggle So all my homies working on the 9 to 5 And doing right to keep themselves up out of trouble Although sometimes I know it seems impossible There is a need to find an easier solver Continue for as long as they can do You'll be sure to be a god of tomorrow I never got to have myself a house, a mansion and a bed I'm not the kind of father who'll be making that end I got myself a girl, but we'll be kicking it aside It's not enough, we're really about to pay the price again Not everything belongs, it's everything you really need It's time to dust aside and mow the beds and buy a tree Are you prepared to follow, and are you prepared to leave To persevere and trouble Although sometimes I know it seems impossible There is a need to find an easier solver Continue for as long as they can do You'll be sure to be a god of tomorrow All those realities appear to
