Qatar Airways plans to buy a 25% stake in Virgin Australia, which will allow Virgin to launch flights to Doha from several Australian cities. The NSW Nurses and Midwives Association has accepted a recommended pay rise of 3%. There are concerns that the push for employees to return to the office will negatively impact regional Australia. National house prices in Australia have increased by 0.4% in the first month of spring. The Prime Minister of Israel has issued a video message to the people of Iran, saying his country stands with them and believes regime change will happen soon. The Australian share market is expected to fall today. In weather, the temperature in the city is 25.1 degrees with a maximum of 31 degrees. There are concerns that the return to the office will negatively impact regional Australia. The Australian dollar is buying 69.1 US cents. The Empower Hour radio show celebrated DJ Jesse's birthday. They discussed his birthday celebrations and played a special birthday so Good morning, I'm Sophie Norris. Qatar Airways has announced it intends to buy a 25% stake in Virgin Australia from its current owner, Bain Capital. Subject to regulator approval, the deal will see Virgin launch flights to Doha from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. These flights will open up new connecting flights to destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The company said the proposed wet lease services will begin in mid-2025, providing Australians with greater local competition for their long-haul travel needs in the near term. The NSW Nurses and Midwives Association has accepted the Industrial Relations Commission's recommended interim pay rise of 3%. The decision to accept the offer came after public sector members within the union voted to accept the recommendation. The union will now enter a four-week period of negotiations with the state government. There are growing concerns the push for employees to return to the office will have a negative consequence for regional Australia. A new survey reveals 82% of CEOs expect to see working from home to become a thing of the past, with efforts underway to see a full-scale return to the office within the next three years. Speaking to National Radio News, CEO of the Regional Australia Institute, Liz Ritchie, explains why the work from home model has been so beneficial for the region. The flexibility that comes with having a truly national employment market ensures that businesses are getting the best talent and people are having the career they so desire. So it's really worrying. In fact, you know, we receive phone calls from people living in the region who are very concerned about some of the organisations calling people back to the office. New data shows national house prices have increased by 0.4% in the first month of spring and more than 6% over the last 12 months. Before capital cities posted falls in dwelling prices for the September quarter, with CoreLogic reporting prices sank in Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart and Darwin. Sydney remains the most expensive Sydney since the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020, medium dwelling prices were up 29.2% or more than $268,000 to a record of almost $1.2 million. The median house value nationally still stands at over $800,000. Overseas, the Prime Minister of Israel has issued a video message addressing the people of Iran, saying his country stands with them. He says Iran's regime change will come a lot sooner than people think. Here's the BBC's Mike Thompson reports. Benjamin Netanyahu's message seemed aimed at the many Iranians struggling to get by in a country hit hard by international sanctions and have watched their government give millions to Hezbollah and Hamas. These groups, he said, have drained the country's coffers and are leading its people into an abyss. Mr. Netanyahu claimed the Islamic Republic would collapse sooner than people thought. Israel's fight, he continued, was not with them, only their leaders, and if once Iranians were free, there could be peace between the ancient Jewish and Persian cultures. In finance, the Australian share market is expected to fall today, despite a positive start to the week in the US. The AFX 200 is set to open 0.3% lower when trade resumes this morning. And the Australian dollar is buying 69.1 US cents. This weather update is proudly brought to you by First 5 Forever, a Cairns Libraries program for under fives helping parents find your village. My name is Joe and as always, I am joined by the DJ with tunes to serve on a tray. And yesterday was his birthday. It's DJ Jesse, everybody. Thank you. It's great to be back for another show. So that's right, everybody. Yesterday was DJ Jesse's birthday, 30th of September. How did it go, buddy? Did you have a great day? Yeah, I had a great day. Yeah, what did you get up to? Well, I went to Villa Romana for dinner. Beautiful, Villa Romana down the Esplanade. What did you have? I had pizza. Beautiful, okay. And I had... Wait, what did you have for dessert? Cold rock. Cold rock ice cream? Yeah, I had mallow, cookies and cream and chocolate. Nice. And it got mixed with Tim Tams. Beautiful. M&M's and marshmallows. Beautiful, marshmallows, M&M's. Yeah. Great, great. And what else did you do for your birthday? That's not all you did, is it? You didn't just go out for some food. What else did you do? Well, I went to the aquarium and I took... Okay, so Laura, who took you to the aquarium? Kieran Hansen. Kieran Hansen, big shout out to Kieran Hansen and one of his other support workers, great. What was your favourite part about the aquarium, dude? The fish. The fish, any particular type of fish that took your fancy? The orange ones with the tail-like stripes. Oh, do you mean a clownfish? Yes. Was his name Marlin? Nemo. Nemo. Wait, is Marlin his dad? Yes. Okay, cool. And there's his blue tail fish. Blue Tang? Blue Tang. Blue Tang, you mean Dory? Yep. So you saw all those guys at the aquarium yesterday, huh? Yes. Oh man, I'm glad you had a great day. Well, I'm super stoked it's your birthday. I do have a little present for you in the car. I haven't given it to you yet, but I have got something a little special for you. What would it be? I'm not going to tell you. It won't be that doll. No, it won't be that. But this isn't your main present, by the way. Your main present is in the post. This is just a little present just to get you by on your birthday. Yeah, I wish that doll will visit me. I'm sure it will one day. Well, we've got a little song for you first, Jesse. You don't know it's on the agenda, but here we go. We've got Don McLean with the birthday song for our birthday boy, Jesse. If I could say the things I feel, it wouldn't be the same. Some things are not spoken of, some things have no name. Though the words come hard to me, I'll say them just for you. For this is something rare for me. This feeling is so new. You see, I love the way you love me. Love the way you smile at me. I love the way you live this life with me. Long ago, I heard the song of lovers singing to me. Through the days of bleak new frames, I hum that melody. All along, I loved the song, but I never learned it through. Ah, but since the day you came along, I saved it just for you. You see, I love the way you love me. Love the way you smile at me. I love the way we live this life we're in. I don't believe in magic, but I do believe in you. And when you say you believe in me, there's so much magic I can do. Now you see me and now you don't. Watch me dive below, deep down in your love lair, where the sweet fish come and go. And I might sink, and I might drown, but death don't mean a thing. Cause life continues right along. When I play this birthday song, I learn from you. You can sing. Hi, I'm Josh. Hi, I'm Malia. And you're listening to Cairns FM 89.1. Yes, Tom, I'm at Straight on the Beach and it is absolutely beautiful here today. And the good looking chefs at Straight on the Beach are pumping it out. There's great food, cocktails and coffee. And I gotta say, awesome value. It's almost too cheap. It's very relaxed here, seven days a week at Straight on the Beach. Hey, should we start off with your playlist? I know you're ready to get cracking with your own. Yeah. Yeah, okay. What have we got coming up, bro? aloud, there's a longing in the sound, there is more I could be. Darkness I leave, for a place I've never seen, it's been calling out to me, that is where I should be. We never carried days on our own, but now it's up to us to know, the weight of being so much more, we must find ourselves a place to go. On we march, with a magnet soar, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. As we walk out, without question, without doubt, in the light that we have found, it is finally clear. Our day has come, and we'll forget who we are, we are ready, we are young, we have nothing to fear. We never carried days on our own, but now it's up to us to know, the weight of being so much more, we must find ourselves a place to go. On we march, with a magnet soar, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. On we march, till we meet the door, we will light our way, with our lanterns on. Darkness I leave, for a place I've never seen, it's been calling out to me, that is where I should be. It's a beautiful track from their 2013 album Mount Fires, that talks about hope and new beginnings. I hope that one was for my gang at Red Ink. The gang down at Red Ink, do you know them? Do they know that song? Have you done that song together? Yeah, it's on in choir. Great stuff. Alright, now I'm sure some of our listeners may be aware already, but last week was the National Week of Deaf People, NWDP, here in Australia. This is an annual celebration that recognizes the contributions and achievements of the deaf community. It usually takes place in late September or early October and coincides with the International Week of the Deaf, organized by the World Federation of the Deaf. The NWDP is a key event for raising awareness about the unique culture, language, Auslan, the Australian Sign Language, and the rights of deaf Australians. The week features a variety of events, such as community gatherings, public talks, advocacy campaigns, and cultural celebrations, all aimed at increasing public understanding of deaf issues. Themes typically center around promoting equal access to education, employment, and public services for deaf people, and advocating for the recognition and use of Auslan. The event also emphasizes the importance of deaf identity, encouraging both deaf and hearing communities to work together to support greater inclusion. Throughout the week, organizations such as Deaf Australia, schools, and community groups host activities that celebrate the richness of deaf culture, from art exhibitions to Auslan classes. One of the main goals of NWDP is to empower the deaf community and promote visibility of the challenges they face, as well as the strengths they bring to society. It's a time to focus on rights, communication, and collaboration. For more details about the events, or to get involved, you can visit organizations like Deaf Australia or the World Federation of the Deaf.
