Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and human behavior. It covers topics like gender dynamics, human behavior, social classes, race, and theories that explain societal structures. These concepts relate to everyone and contribute to changes in values, beliefs, norms, and structures. For example, class inequality is created by socioeconomic status and leads to stereotypes. In Australia, a neoliberal capitalist system prioritizes wealth over health or happiness. Sociology helps us understand these inequalities and their causes. It is important for understanding society as a whole. Thanks, Joel. It's actually really interesting because it's such a broad range of topics that relate to sociology. We use it in our everyday lives without even realising and it's become important in recent events. I would describe sociology as the study of social life, social change and the study of human behaviour. Some examples of what we study are different gender dynamics and sexuality, human behaviours, classes in society, race and theories that explain these structures in society. The concept actually relates to everyone in society as they all contribute to the changes in values, beliefs, norms and structures. For a better understanding, let's say we discuss the topic of class inequality. Essentially, class creates inequality. There are multiple theories that explain that class is prominent on socioeconomic status and there are also terms and phrases that stick to that group, creating stereotypes. Bogans, for example, are seen as low class and don't have access to the same opportunities as higher classes. There are so many factors that form these inequalities that affect so many groups and individuals, which is why it's relevant in today's society. In Australia, we live in a neoliberal capitalist system, meaning wealth is more prioritised than health or happiness. Through a sociological lens, we can see why these inequalities exist and what the causes are. It's clear sociology is important to grasp our society as a whole.
