Gender is a term that encompasses both biological sex and societal constructs. Sex is biological and considered natural, while gender is a societal construct learned through socialization. Family, education, religion, and media play a vital role in this socialization process. Before discussing gender discrimination, it's important to understand how gender is constructed and how we unconsciously practice and resist it in our daily lives. Students, it is very necessary to know the basic concepts which are associated with the umbrella term gender. First, let us talk about sex which is the prakritic linga. Prakritic? Why prakritic? Because it is biological and since it is biological therefore it is considered as natural. On the other hand, gender is a societal construct, that is, it is samajic linga. I repeat, samajic linga. We learn to conform to the gender norms through the process of socialization. And who is responsible? Who plays vital role in the process of this socialization? The basic institution, that is, the family and then there are other institutions also like educational institutions, religion, mass media, etc. Hence, before going directly into the concept of gender discrimination, it is important to know what constitutes gender, how it is constructed and how we unknowingly do gender. Doing gender means what? Doing gender means practicing it. We practice it unconsciously in our daily life and in this process what we do? We resist its undoing. Thank you.
