Indie folk pop music is a genre that combines the traditional elements of folk music with the modern sounds and styles of independent music. It originated in the late 20th century and has since evolved to encompass a wide range of musical influences from acoustic instrumentation to electronic elements. Indie folk hybridizes the acoustic guitar melodies of traditional folk music with contemporary instrumentation. Indie folk is often characterized by acoustic guitar melodies, harmonized vocals, lo-fi production, and lyrical themes that reflect personal experiences and emotions. In Chapter 12 of our book, Creating Meaning, there are several elements of music discussed. There are two elements that the genre of indie folk pop embody more than the others, the first being harmony. In music, a harmony refers to two or more complementary notes played or sung at the same time. For example, a choir may sing in harmony, with one section singing the melody while other sections sing the accompanying harmony. Indie folk pop is characterized by its emphasis on guitars, banjos, violins, and mandolins. It often features intricate arrangements and harmonies that create a rich sonic tapestry. An example I'll be playing for you to show harmony is Dr. Dog's Where'd All the Time Go? In the beginning of this song, we first hear the alto saxophone, clarinet, trombone, and piano harmonizing with one another, and then we hear the electric guitar, electric bass, and the drum set chime in towards the end of the beginning. This is an example of harmony. The second musical element is tempo. Tempo can be defined as the pace or speed at which a section of music is played. Tempos help the composer to convey a feeling of either intensity or relaxation. We can think of the tempo as the speedometer of the music. The speed of music is measured in beats per minute, or BPM. The genre of indie folk pop is very versatile when it comes to tempo. There can be tempos that are low BPM or high BPM. I'll be playing two examples for you to show you both. The first example is Ophelia by The Lumineers, released in 2016. The second example of tempo is by Noah Kahn, You're Gonna Go Far, released in 2022. As I said before, the genre of indie folk pop has a very versatile tempo. The Lumineers' Ophelia had an average BPM of 76, or Andante. Noah Kahn's You're Gonna Go Far had an average BPM of 170 BPM, or Presto. The genre of indie folk pop has had a very cultural significance and impact on the world of music. Indie folk is a cultural movement that allows recognition of indigenous communities and their heritage. It has also given independent artists a platform to voice their political views and social messages, often overlooked by mass media. Indie folk has been a soundtrack to alternative lifestyles and counterculture movements. It has provided anthems for those who resist conformity and question societal norms. The genre's themes of individuality and nonconformity have inspired various subcultures, from hipsters to activists advocating for social change. As I come to the close of my podcast, I would like to say thank you for listening to it and indulging into the world of the genre indie folk or indie folk pop. Before I leave you, try listening to a new genre. I just discovered this genre a few years ago. Let me leave you with Fleet Fox's White Winter Hymnal, 2008. I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the eye, I was following the track, I was following the flow, With a couple of red eyes down their throat, To keep their little heads from falling in the snow, And I turned around and there you go, And my beautiful hair turned me white, So let's go, baby, let's go.
