Carmelo, a friend from Mexico, immigrated to the US at 17 due to lack of education opportunities. After failed attempts, he successfully crossed the border, enduring a dangerous journey. He came to work and provide a better life for his sister. However, living in the US legally is challenging, with the constant fear of deportation and being separated from family. Carmelo's story highlights the sacrifices immigrants make for a brighter future. Hi, for this assignment, I interviewed a friend from Mexico who immigrated at the age of 17. He didn't have the opportunity to finish high school since his mother worked selling gorditas and couldn't afford to provide an education for him and his younger sister. In 2021, Carmelo, my friend, decided to come to work in the United States. He traveled from Zacatecas to Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. He was there for several days waiting for the day to cross through the desert. The first time he crossed, immigration captured him, but he tried to cross again and managed to reach Texas. The first time, along the way, he was accompanied by his friends, five other men, and a guide. It took them three days to get close to the border, but in the end, they didn't manage to cross because his friend was becoming dehydrated to the point where he could no longer walk, so they had to look for immigration to get help, and that's why they were captured. The second time they tried it, they were afraid of not being able to cross because otherwise they would lose the $5,000 they already paid. Carmelo told me that it's the worst experience he has ever had to live since. It was immensely exhausting, and many times he thought he was going to die on the way. He also told me that he came with all the desire to work so that his sister could have an education and have the opportunities that he didn't have. He said that his life changed a lot since he had to live in this country legally, and of course it is very difficult. He always lives in fear of being deported, and the most difficult thing for him has been not being able to see his family, but he prefers to make sacrifices so that they have an easier life.
