The speaker discusses their thoughts and predictions for the Manchester derby. They believe that Manchester United should play counter-attacking football and focus on hitting Manchester City on the break. They express concerns about City's possession-based game and their technical skills. The speaker also talks about the performance of certain players, such as Harry Maguire and Raphael Brown. They discuss the importance of the match for Manchester United's top-four hopes and express doubts about their ability to close the gap on Aston Villa. They end by mentioning a wonder goal scored in a previous game and criticize Alan Shearer's comments about a player's demeanor. What's the craic? Welcome to the Earthways podcast where we're going to cover in the Manchester derby today. We are back at mum's kitchen table using one microphone See how it goes So what are your thoughts today? Everyone's sort of predicting the Manchester might get destroyed today, Bodie's saying I think I think he'd set up the team the way he did against Liverpool Not exactly parked the bus, but we'll not, I think we'll play counter-attacking football today Yeah, yeah, well I think that usually suits Against the big teams. I think everyone was saying the same thing coming into the derby game How many goals did Liverpool go on the score? Off the 7-0 thrashing Hmm, so I think everyone's saying the same today, so I hope for the same fight, the same bite, the same passion Yeah, and the same effort performance That's it, he just wanted to put an end to it Yeah, and it was a beat, it was a beat. We're not expected to win this game. I think the team picked itself today I don't think they picked too much else. I am surprised that he's not playing Anthony because On that left side, they are very very dangerous and Anthony does his defensive duties very very well Yeah Now if he is intent to play Bruno Fernandes, which I think he is, out as the right winger today and scoffed in the middle I don't know if Bruno would want to track back the 7-0 Anthony would, as effective as Anthony is He does track back, you're right, he's not as effective in my opinion No But he does put the hard yards in Oh he does, he does an awful lot of rolling and not a whole lot of tackling And when he does tackle it's like frustrating kicking from behind and bringing people down He's not great, he does the pressing side as well, but then when he's called upon to dispossess a player He can't let himself down The future, can't see the future Yeah, the prediction of the future Yeah I think if he were to have any chance today, he has to counter-attack, doesn't he? He has to contain City and try and hit them on the break But I'm really worried, like that's all he can do, but I'm really worried about Like, let's face it, if City show up today and say they will base But it's how many goals are they going to score? No, just let City have the ball, that's their game Let them play the possession, you know, base game, let them have it That's what I'm saying, I worry about that, because that is their game They're not the sort of team that's going to get frustrated, or look frustrated like Manchester United came to war We have the ball, we don't know what to do, the more you allow them to play that way And we just look for that counter-attack, they will score I think we need to get in their faces today Yeah, and again, we need to buff them off Oh, I think that's dangerous, personally, I do I don't think they're the most physical team, though No They're not, but they're technically miles ahead of us Yeah, but I think, unless I'm thinking you're not wrong I would just like to see United rock them up a bit Just go in and be really, really physical You're playing at Old Trafford, you've nothing left to lose Don't go around kicking them What do you call it, the etiquette? But when you have the chance, oh sorry, when you get the chance to play Put them work it on Hopefully go through Holland Especially Bernardo Silva and their weak midfield Because once you take Broderick out of that equation, the rest of them are quite light And if you want to beat City, you're going to need to do something different And praying that Casemiro doesn't get clotted Yellow card early I don't want to get in anybody's face, because we're as far ahead as they really do Yeah, I think he needs to sit back a wee bit Yeah, I think he needs to be calm, do it, and just protect that defence That's his first Score prediction, Mum? Do you know I'm going for a draw? Score draw, or no? Score draw, 32-8 Yeah As a United fan, I'm hoping for another nice wee 2-1 or 3-2 in the United But Scotty was the winner Epic Titanic music playing in the background But I can also see a 4-5-0 They said either day, but I'm hoping, if they should play the way they did against Liverpool I'm hoping, I'll go exactly in the same way, I'll go score draw 1-1, 2-2 Maybe even a 0-0, who knows But I can't see City not scoring Just might of our lives I'm not so deflated that we're going into the next match You know, just All around depression The wind's completely come out of our sails And the head's starting to go down More questions from the players as well Why are we playing, we're not this bad We should be better than this, and that's when the monitor gets to that And you know yourself in the RRB, it's bragging rights It's bragging rights, it's not nice to go into a big game like this And be feeling kind of the way I feel at the minute Where you're like, Jesus, don't go Inferior Man United fans have felt inferior for so long now And I don't have any optimism today In fact I think it's going to be 3 or 4-1 I think we'll score, I think we'll catch them on the break at some point But I just love that United team, this isn't 1-2-5 United team is not fit to play in Not with Jonny Allen's Playing there with Hector Lindelof They're all Jonny, they're all Jonny And then one, what do you call him, Anglo-Ire? Really? Oh yeah Yeah No, I would have had I think you're massively wrong on Maguire this season Unhandled? Yeah, I think Maguire is going to make a bad centre-back Oh, defensively he's signed I'm going to make a big call here Harry Maguire has impressed me more this season than Raphael Brown I think Raphael Brown is a very good technical player And a sheepish defender this season See the Fulham game, the Fulham game really annoyed me The amount of things he pulled out Of going for the ball from corners and set-pieces And I think it's because we're not giving him a contract The lad is just like Saving himself Yeah, I'm not going to get injured, I'm not going to hurt myself I'm not going to pull it away So I think the Raphael Brown from last season It'd be laughable to compare Harry Maguire to him But the Brown I'm seeing this season That's a big turnaround from you earlier in the season So why is Brown not playing over Maguire? Yeah, I That's a big turnaround, that's a big slip-around from you No, but I think my point was that He didn't want to play Raphael Brown over Harry Maguire So I think for the monitor The point that I was trying to make is Why does he feel that he can't put Raphael Brown Into that team? And now they see Raphael Brown in the team I'm like, what was he even an artist? Raphael Brown's hot partner I'm not going to go off on a tangent here But it's funny, the politics in football clubs Because remember the wee guy, Rooney That plays the wee Copenhagen player Oh yes He's been dropped now from his club Because he won't sign a contract And it's all in his head So, I mean And he was very good that night Yeah, he was But that was the reason behind it Yeah, and I think Isn't that not a case then To give the likes of Willie Cromwell a chance? I would say so Do you know what I mean? I suppose you don't want to lose the derby either And then, you know If we do get tanked today And Kembala plays There'll be so much pressure It's not the derby It's not the derby But I'm talking about If he is going to be the monitor For the next 10 or 11 games If Raphael Brown is gone And Raphael Brown is hot partner Because he doesn't want to get injured Then play Willie Cromwell There's no point in stealing minutes from Cromwell When he's going to be the future And Brown's the past But then again On the other side of the coin On the FA Cup On maybe progressing the FA Cup You want your best defenders out there If you have a sniff of a chance I think I think it would be Top 4 is going It would slip us 11 points away From Villa and Spurs To see how many games to play And then those games by the end of the season Those 11 games, you've got Chelsea, Liverpool Arsenal I don't see Ten Hag winning those games 36 points There's 12 games left After today 11 games left There's 36 points available for all teams So we're not asking that What we're asking is Can Manchester United close a 4 game gap on Villa Will Villa lose 4 games to the end of the season And United win every game to the end of the year No, so they won't close a 4 game gap on Villa That's not happening Once they lose today, Top 4 is gone for me We're counting on Villa To lose 4 more games than we do That's how you have to think of it That's not happening I don't understand It would be incredibly optimistic It would be the Newcastle Man United season Liverpool would win 3 points or whatever But that is it It's doable They're not playing better than we are They're in shock They've come round the corner again They were looking really bad They were lucky enough to get away from Camberwell Road yesterday They had it in front of them They were flying and then they dipped And then we beat them a few times I think it's not inconceivable To have them have another dip They've never been in this situation before I agree A club like Man United shouldn't be relying on other teams Plus when you talk about having a dip You're still applying The fantasy that Manchester United Will win the next 11 games That's the big one I don't think it's going to happen Based on the season It's too inconsistent Don't have the personnel available It's too little too late They could shock me in a group Let's see how we go They're saying there's a chance We'll be back in half an hour What are 45 minutes? 3 What a goal Absolutely a wonder goal Do you need to do more of that? You're such a critic I think I don't know when that was recorded Stupidness I think it was criticism of Shearer Somebody As prolific a goal scorer As revered as Alan Shearer Comes out and criticises you Doesn't criticise your tattoos Criticises your demeanour His demeanour on the pitch His behaviour at times I think Shearer in the FA Cup game Was calling about that It was a good bit of commentary We've all seen it In countless times this season Why he's gone through all the while Doing these celebrations After he scored one goal in a cup Compared to last season We can all see the effort And the frustration at him I think Shearer had a point It's just Indicative of Mark Osgood's season So far The goal is absolutely outstanding He should have headed the ball away from Kyle Walker And got away from him But I'll forget that Because that's hard enough to do But then he should have scored He cut out three there in that first half I think Manchester United To be positive I think they have to step back against City But they're coming in They're getting out to the runners They're closing down midfield City have chances We are getting away with it But we're getting away with it Because we're making it a very difficult, messy, scrappy game It's very complex though We're playing as a team I think City only had one real Clear-cut chance there And that was the Haaland open net That's Foden's as well That was Victor Lindloss Running out to the midfielder Foden couldn't believe his luck I think Lindloss didn't know Foden was behind him I think I pointed out at the corner there Passers-by I think De Bruyne and Doakie were playing around Look behind Lindloss Isn't he a centre-back? I know he is a centre-back He's not a wing-back He is playing like a duck out of water He's a bang-average centre-back And he's a really poor full-back But Who else could he put on? Positional awareness He doesn't have that top-left back When you've got Phil Foden and Kay Walker operating out in the wing That's going to sting him in the second half If he doesn't wake up Yeah, Walker's brilliant Would you swap them around then? Would you swap Lindloss and Dallow? I would have Lindloss in the under-23s I know Honestly I'm not heartened I'd pick Lindloss Lindloss is going to get done It's just not good enough Nowhere near He's seasoned and he's tenured And I understand why he made it to the first team But based on that performance in the first half I think that's where the issue's going to come in the second half Passer really smart coach He took a look at that game and said Look, Lindloss there for the taking Why is everything coming out the middle and the left? Put it out on the right-hand side and somebody do him And once he's out of the game Put the ball in the box Are you sticking with your prediction? City didn't take their chances in the first half No And they will get more chances in the second half They will And we had to put our chances away When we get them Mark Stratford should have been on a hat-trick now Yeah, he should be But yeah, I am sticking with my prediction Score a draw And I'd be happy with it Yeah, score a draw I'll take it, I don't know I hope I'm wrong That absolute sitter of his from Holland Is going to be Just as we say Yeah As much as I keep doing the Scousers a favour I'll take a win At the Etihad and the Derby any day For who he has available And the game it is against the team he's playing This has been good This has been really positive They're defending as a team, playing as a team They're fighting for him, fighting for the manager I think they're fighting for themselves as well I remember so much criticism after that following game It wasn't just Marcus Rashford It was the defenders It was Bruno Fernandes Who got slated right, left and centre So it's just, I think they're Yeah, I'm very positive About the way they're playing Because they're playing as a team Instead of a bunch of individuals Maynard and Gareth Mayer have done really well Maynard I think has been a lot more Tenacious today He's getting in people's faces, he's dispossessing the ball He's putting himself in awkward spots Annoying Roderick With the phones, rhythms They're not able to just string Yes they're getting chances They're always going to get chances They're playing it around The so-called best team in the world Has had two clear-cut chances At home I think that speaks volumes of how well they've defended As a team today I think we've another goal in us We will give our chances to it Especially if we're patient Right And then City will push everything In the last 15 minutes And that's when you see the gaps appearing To be hypercritical We need to keep the ball there There's times where we've just given it It's fine If they're going to have chances And we're going to be able to defend them But giving them chances is just criminal It's just inviting more pressure Than needed And we are under big pressure I'm just glad to see That if we stick together In the second half Whether City come in here And they end up beating us We haven't done ourselves injustice I'm with you Cain Because this is what I want to see With this Man United side I want them to be as consistent In the second half as they were in the first I want this to go on for 90 minutes Not 45 To actually take it That we're at this stage We have to do this to survive It's not pretty But this is good I'm inviting this I didn't want to get destroyed by Manchester United And now you've got a Man United team Who's putting the shit in And beating them at half time I'm sure a lot of United fans Have had a twin cause Between watching this game And taking it all for a walk 100% All weekend work That's why I'm glad I'm the AJ I'm not on social media I don't have to listen to anybody Do you think you'll make any changes in the second half? The only change I would make Possibly Giornaccio Is having a poor game today He's a very slight man He's only worth 19 And He's maybe stuck out now 20 to go He is good I think if you're going to put Anthony on the pitch Then there's a case for swapping Victor Lindelof For Diogo Dalo Sorry to interrupt Would you listen to Diogo Dalo And help me play well together Especially with that overlap Yeah But are they going to overlap against City? Well that's what I'm saying I'm hoping that City will throw the kitchen sink at us And we'll catch them Yeah I'm hoping that too I think Anthony will be an interesting one to come on in this game Because if you look at the positions where our attackers are getting the ball At the minute It's a lot closer to City's net Because it's breaking quickly Or Onana who's fissing balls over the top His distribution in parts has been very good today So that would suit Anthony Because he doesn't have to run then Anthony just gets picked when he picks the ball up too deep And has to turn and run it some league Because he's no piece I don't understand what the thinking was I would take Anthony on there I think Anthony could give us something That we're not getting from Garnaccio That Hallamness has just come up on the screen Oh my God Shocking Was he in two minds whether to hit it Or did he go for the spectacular goal I think he just I don't know maybe he just made the wrong decision Yeah Or he's sitting with a voodoo doll I think he made the race Now that I'm looking at him with his body language I didn't know whether it was coming high enough to hit it So he's trying to jump with his foot God that's actually further up than I thought He's bounced off his big toe We'll not want to watch that again No that's a new news isn't it Right we've got 45 minutes more to go Hopefully United can keep this up Three points today would be massive If somebody handed me a point now I would take their hand off Oh you would have done it of course at the start of the day Leave them now at 45 minutes If someone says you can have a point Please Please We'll see what happens in the second half We're back Full time the Sands As Rory would say How do you think that went It went alright till the second goal in I think we were containing them But I mean City are levels above us 100% I knew that we wouldn't keep up that consistency For the 90 minutes And I was hoping that they hit That third goal Ciarán was a force A real force I'll tell you what I'll take 3-1 Where we are at the minute I think we were saying during the second half I think we didn't get embarrassed I think it was a sloppy goal to lead away It's avoidable there The 3-1 may put a bit of gloss on City's City's win We're all expecting a tanking Me one of many I think it's the hope that kills you I think you said it very well there Hope kills you It does and it's not only that We had some quality players I think we were speaking like this during the match Some absolute dross as well What did Scott McTominay do in that match Nothing Garnacha was woeful as well Rashford scored a wonder goal And then disappeared I was thinking he'd be a bit more Physical present than Garnacha Apart from the goal Rashford offered very much But the thing about it is You give the likes of Garnacha a bye Because he's only a teenager still This first full season Rashford's there for what? 8-9 years now It's the constant debate Does he stay? Does he keep him? Open the door and throw him out And then does he turn around and turn into You know He would probably rip it up in another league Because it's totally different to the Premier League The thing about Marcus Rashford is And as I said before I could care less about his cures, tattoos His money that he earns He does not put in a shift for me No One of the constant criticisms I think we've all had of Rashford Is his effort Or lack of I don't care if he scored 5 goals or 20 goals If you're not putting in the shift On the pitch for the badge I'm not sure, is food coming off? Food coming off, and rightfully so Where do you think this leaves us In the race for the top 4? I think it's a stretch now Because we're 6 points behind Tottenham And Tottenham have game in hand So they win the game in hand That's 9 points And then 11 off It's going to take an epic fail From Tottenham It's going to take Tottenham to do with Tottenham Hopefully they will Come on, do it first Just do it bottom of the place I don't know I think what Rui kind of said It's mathematically gone I feel I have to lose 4 It's not mathematically yet It's not mathematically gone So we'll keep a bit of hope in maybe I don't know We weren't embarrassed by that I think we're all impressed By the organisation And the tactics The heads didn't drop City being City passed the ball As City do We didn't get much of a foothold You're not going to get much of a foothold Against City at home When they're winning I think Guardiola has that well embedded Into all of them When you have hope in the first half And you start hearing the way Every pass going That must be tomorrow night For the players on the pitch We weren't overawed In that first half I think us scoring the goal first Buoyed the team What encouraged me was They played as a team today Not as a bunch of individuals There's one thing you can say about them today I think Going forward What do I think about the second goal? It was a good move though wasn't it? It was Typical of Man City The first goal was Marcus Rashford's goal It was just a worldly goal But City's movement Unbelievable I don't think What do you call it? Substitution helped us today But Johnny Evans looked gassed Because he put a shift in Johnny Evans was brilliant He rolled him back to the third He rolled him back in years today That was the first half And then people have to realise Kobe Mane was only 18 This was break out season So Garnaccio was There was no real service to the front line But The only thing is Garnaccio He gave the ball away very cheaply I thought today He was very weak today Garnaccio was 19 Kobe Mane was 18 He was up against Rodri Seasoned pros I'm just glad we didn't get tanked It could have been very demoralising The little silver lining We didn't do Liverpool a favour I hope This gives a bit of A wee bit of confidence That they didn't They stood up to City for a good part of that game They passed it around 27 shots I'm looking at the stats here But how many shots were outside the box Or way off wide I don't know Garnaccio had a good game as well You can't blame him for any of those goals The big criticism is that City Improved in the second half We have nothing going forward in the second half At all There is such a gap It's not even a gap in quality Well yes there is a gap in quality But Pep Guardiola Has been for many years with City True He's been allowed to implement his system Everybody talks about systems Arteta is the same Jurgen Klopp is the same Of course they are going to be way ahead of the game All the same From top to bottom And they just keep adding quality every year We need a good damn clear out That's all we need Rush sales Buy one get one free Take this one We'll give you Anthony for free It's trying to get them out the door It's ridiculous Do you know what I mean Anthony Martial is one Yesterday I was sitting there With no recognised award Today I was thinking Anthony Martial is sitting there with 250 grand a week That's 13 million a year Gone What are you getting for it That's the Woodward era We can sit here and talk all day About Orland and Woodward We'll look ahead a wee bit here I think we have Everton next week Is that at home or away At home Or maybe yesterday Did we yesterday No They lost 3-1 Bad signal But you know we are at home Early kick off next Saturday It's a good chance It's a good chance To get a win on the board All we have to do is go into the next game Win the next game See how many points we accumulate At the end of the season And take it from there That's all we are going to do Hopefully we get a few players back I think after March There will be a few players Luke Shaw apparently is out for the rest of the season That was confirmed And Martin is Will not be back until The end of April We really need him back Johnny Evans did really well I think the shift they all put in In the first half Especially with Evans There was a crack show After 60-75 minutes Did you see the post I put up on Instagram Which one The Ten Hag interview Yeah I think I did It's my fault anyway I didn't hashtag anything He was speaking to D on Dublin And it was an environment He was relaxed in And D on Dublin specifically asked him About his system And he said Yes he has a system But it's dependent on The like of Onana And Martinez And Casemiro And that's playing out from the back And then I put a quote in Roy Keane said They cannot play that way with Harry Maguire But you cannot have a high line with a defender Like Harry Maguire So therefore he is being impeded In his style of play Because he has not got the players to implement That style of play And Roy is not here to argue Which is why we are saying All season long One player makes a big difference Huge difference You cannot have Harry Maguire leading the high line And balls going over the top And him trying to run like a coke machine He is like a cricket scorer We are all hoping for this Starting 7, starting 11 Having the best players that implement Ten Hag style Of course you are going to have an injury or two When you have the players That he has got in so far Getting injured That most vital to the way he plays It's going to look as inconsistent as we are And then the chopping changes And many sets of centre backs If I remember the numbers That came up on the screen I think we have had In 27 games We have had 23 Different defensive line ups I think that is a big clobber You think it is a defensive partnership That we have had over the years Classic, never, always fit Warriors It is what it is The FA Cup What do I think? What do I think? I don't know I think I have had home In the Cup Anything can happen They are missing some players We are missing some players It is a good chance It is and I think we need this FA Cup More than Liverpool need it Hopefully Liverpool has one big eye On their title running Should Liverpool do that every year? That would be the most Delusional fans ever Big send off for Clapton on that Just one more thing Before we go And lick our wounds here I think we both noticed this And we have had to keep We sleep after it all the time But walking down the tunnel Straight away I think you noticed it first there Yeah I did, I noticed it And I thought he never went over To the fans, but then again I don't know whether it was the City fans Or our own fans I think people are just Fed up with that whole spiel About his PR team And coming out and blaming the media And I think Melissa Reddy hit the nail on the head And said that because Of his charity work he got a bye Nobody went in on him And he alluded to A couple of things in that interview But it was Forescope It really was forescope And you've seen the players All except for Most of them are over And it's a bad look And I think that'll be highlighted Because he's been in the spotlight so much For his behaviour He puts himself in the spotlight here And then he does big speech He goes on about his Tickets for, like don't park on yellow lines Marcus And not get the media Attention, don't go out and slam Tequilas and then not turn up for training He puts a target On his own back here I think that's the line On the fan at the end of the day Whether he stays or if a new Manager comes in I'll just finish off With this If Erik ten Hag stays Bruno Fernandes Wonderful player, good career player that he is And Marcus Rashford Do not take that system he wants to play No And I think you're right If they do bring a manager Or if they're going to stick with ten Hag Then The new system, the new ownership And structure coming in Will see, should be able to see that And You're going to have to, as we had the Big heated discussion over money spent And invested You're going to have to If that's the way they're going to go That's what's going to happen Or if a new manager does come in And likes the way, prefers the way Rashford and Fernandes play And can fit them into their style of play Then we'll still get two quality players Which is I'm sure they'll hopefully give Big Jim a look at the whole picture Sell them all And invest better I think Sound investments Folks We shall leave it there Don't forget to check us out On Spotify And all your podcast listening services We will be back for Everton game Next week And the three of us will be back around the table Not a bad, not the worst result It could have been worse Hope killed us there Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend folks And we'll chat to you next week Bye everyone
