Turn your Bibles, if you would, to Ephesians 1, verse 15, and we're going to read through verse 23 in a message titled, The Working of His Great Might. The Working of His Great Might. The Word of the Living God. For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and of revelation and the knowledge of Him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which He has called you, what are the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might, that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come. And He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. And we do trust the Lord would add His own blessing to the public reading of His infallible and holy word today. Amen. Amen. Everything we have, things spiritual, things temporal, everything we have comes from God. Whether they be a blessing or a curse, everything we have comes from God. The good days, the bad days, the sunshine, the rain, it all comes from God. Now, men can argue whether or not rain and sunshine is a blessing or a curse. And frankly, it would depend on what you need at the moment and God's disposition toward the saved and the lost. And that's a different discussion. But what I want you to understand is that everything that we have in this world comes from God. And specifically today, I want to focus on Thanksgiving. I want to focus on praying and loving one another. And then I want to spend a little bit of time, as the scripture does in this very passage, reminding us of what it is that God's great might has wrought on our behalf. And we'll take Paul's own outline as our guide. There's no need for me to come up with some cute three-point sermon when the outline of scripture here suffices so beautifully. Paul says in verse 15, as we take these verses one at a time, for this reason, because I have heard of your faith and of your love for me, for this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, verse 16, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. So the verses here begin a section in Ephesians where Paul is expressing thanksgiving for the mighty work of God paid for by Christ and applied by the Holy Spirit. Paul teaches us to pray for our brothers and sisters in the Lord. How is he teaching us here? By example. Paul says, for this reason. And if you back up just a minute in your text, you'll see in verse 13 and 14, the Bible says, in him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, verse 14, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory. Verse 15, for this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, which they believed in the true and saving gospel, the spirit of God has called this assembly to believe the truth concerning Jesus. Paul then says, because of your faith, because of your love toward the saints, which by the way, we'll see in a moment, is the outgrowth of faithful gospel teaching and preaching. The outgrowth of faithful gospel preaching and teaching in a congregation that believes God's word is always going to be love. That's the positive outgrowth of gospel preaching in a congregation. Paul says, because I know about your faith, I know about your love for the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you. Remembering you in my prayers. So Paul teaches us here to remember one another, to pray for one another, to lift one another up. You know, it is ironic that some of the most judgmental places on the planet, some of the most hurtful places on the planet are religious societies and assemblies. Places that claim to love God and love their fellow man and love one another, and yet love is absent from their assemblies and in its place, self-righteousness, condemnation, arrogance, deceitfulness. And you would ask, how is it that so many of these places are deceitful? They're deceitful in that they are self-deceiving. People think that they're somehow righteous before God by their own works. And so then they walk around acting as though they're perfect attendants to Sunday school. Somehow commends them to God, idolatry. And then it's easy to judge everyone else when you think that you've arrived. When you realize, at least in those societies, that salvation is not really by grace, it's by choice. So then you have the standing then to look at a neighbor and say, I'm somehow better than you are. But grace levels the playing field, does it not? The gospel of our salvation is the work of His great might. It's the work of God. We're black as coal. How are we to be white as snow? You ever seen anybody black as soot, covered in the stains of dye working in a textile mill? They don't run right home and take a quick shower and wash that off. Those dyes are set in the skin. And how much worse do you think it is than our dead sinful condition? There isn't any amount of effort you can employ to wash yourself or make yourself clean. We need the gospel of God's salvation in Christ. It is only by the working of His great might that we can pass from death to life. Not from sickness to health. The Bible says we will pass as He calls us to believe this gospel. We pass from death into life. He calls this gospel promise eternal life in the Son. And the Son gives life to whom He will. Hallelujah forevermore. We can approach the throne of mercy, not in our own works, not because of our own worth or merit, but through and by the merits and auspices of Jesus Christ, we can approach the throne of grace with boldness. Who do we think we are to even open our mouths in prayer to a holy God? What standing do you have in the court of His good grace? What standing do I have? You know, there are stories in the Old Testament, you can read about it yourself, about how you dared not approach the king in his throne room without the appropriate permission. You can read about that yourself. Read the book of Esther. You are going to get your head chopped clean off if you dare to approach the high court of a king without permission, without authorization. And yet we go to the God of heaven in prayer, and we cry out to Him, and we say to Him, Oh God, hear my prayer. And I say to you, by what standing, by what authority do you bring your prayers to God? If it's about us, if it's about anything in us, then we stand woefully inadequate. We're nothing more than interlopers, interlopers, trespassers. But He has called us and caused us to approach His throne with boldness in, by, and through the finished work of Jesus Christ. And we can approach that throne of mercy with our prayers of thanksgiving, supplication, adoration, and praise. I give God praise, not because I am worthy, but because Christ has made me worthy. I go to Him with my needs, and I go to Him in supplication because I know that I have nothing to offer to fix my station in this world, but that I can have eternal life through Him. And I know I'm powerless, but He is all-powerful. I bring my praises to Him, not because I am perfect, but because He is altogether lovely. The Apostle Paul gives thanks for the Ephesian spiritual life because only God deserves the glory for the miracle wrought by grace alone. Isn't it interesting that Paul here says, He gives thanks for you. Verse 16, he says, I do not cease to give thanks for you. Now, if this were a freewill decision that we made, if this were something that we wrought up in ourselves, we drummed it up, and all the preacher had to do was come up with a really cool way to convince you psychologically to make the best use of your freewill decision, then why on earth would Paul be giving thanks to God for the work he has wrought? Why wouldn't he look at them and say, good job? It's a fair question. But know we see that God will share His glory with no one on that great day when we stand before Him dressed as it were in the righteous robes of Jesus Christ, not a one of His people would dare look back and say, I did my part. I know I did my part. We're all going to say, all glory and honor be to you, O God. Thank you for saving a wretch like me. And it's going to be glorious, beloved. It's going to be a time. I don't know how many billions of years we're gonna spend simply just worshiping at His throne like it's new every moment. I don't know if looking into the face of God is going to be just the infinitude of it all, just boggles my mind. I like to think that the old song, the old hymn says, we'll have a grand homecoming week the first 10,000 years. Time won't matter when time doesn't matter. And let's just let our brains soak in that truth just for a second. This idea that eye has not seen, ear has not heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, exactly what God has prepared for those who love Him. We have no idea. Now that's being said in that context to our shame due to the sin in this old world. But beloved, you read that passage through redeemed eyes and you begin to realize, yes, it's sad that we haven't thought of it. We can't see it. We can't think about it. But it's also exciting to know that He has prepared a place for us that's so awesome and so glorious that we can't even imagine the bliss of being reunited with God just like we were in the garden. What an awesome thought. And so when we're giving thanks for all this, what do we do? Paul says, Lord, I give You thanks for the Ephesians. He didn't say, Good job, Ephesians. You made the right choice. No. He said, Thank you, Lord, for saving these people. That's the right attitude. That's the right way to look at this book. Once you take your eyes off grace, once you take your eyes off of unmerited favor in Christ and you start looking anywhere else for the righteousness, first of all, you're not going to find the righteousness. You're going to find self-righteousness and deceit. And I would encourage you to look to Christ. Look to Christ. Look to Christ and live. He says, if I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto Me. Who does the drawing? Who does the saving? And as Paul thanked God for the Ephesian church, we need to thank God for saving a wretch like me, like you. We don't look into our own hearts and say, look what a good job you did. You really listened to that preacher and you heeded that call. You did that. No, you didn't. God works in you and through you to do His good pleasure. Thank God He does because I'm stubborn. Thank God He works through us. Thank God He does the work. I'm glad this is, as they say, a monergistic salvation. Mono means one actor. One actor. We lay dead in our tombs of sin. We are Lazarus wrapped up in the grave clothes, away in a tomb, stinking and rotting for four days. And the Lord of glory comes by our way in His good time, in His good season. And He says to us, come forth! And the graves heed His voice. The winds and seas obey. The very elements of the earth obey. The very elements of this world, because they have no choice but to heed the voice of their Creator and Master. Hallelujah forevermore. I give thanks to God for soul salvation. I give thanks to God for the free gift of God's grace in Christ. And I'm elated to know, excited to know, that no matter what comes my way, He will hold me fast.
