He believes that news media and sports media are important forms of media content. Social media is the most important media platform for society, especially among younger people. Ray is not knowledgeable about media industries and regulation, but he mentions Disney as a influential media industry. Advertising has the largest impact on society, and Ray gives examples of targeted ads on platforms like Twitter and Instagram. In terms of media effects, Ray believes that there is a lot of manipulation and lying in the media, particularly in relation to voting and influencing people's thoughts and actions. He sees the role of media in political and social activism as a major problem for media consumers. Ray wants to learn more about media effects and why the media pushes certain agendas. Hi, my name is Ben Wegerson and I am here today in Columbia, Missouri with Ray Dickerson to find out what he thinks about a number of important issues within media and society. What is, please state your name. I'm Ray Dickerson. What is your major? Currently communications being switched to journalism. How media literate do you consider yourself? On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm going to go a cool 6.5. Now I'm going to ask you a few important areas that are related to media literacy. First, I'd like to ask you about the area of media content. How knowledgeable do you consider yourself on media content in general? I mean, it depends on like if we're going in depth, but if we're going overall, probably like a 7, maybe an 8. What is the most important media content available today? Why do you feel so? I would say media content, there's a lot of good media content out there, like of course there's got, you know, news media that's pretty important because, you know, it kind of helps shape the world. And I'd say sports media is also up there because it's very popular, it's very notable, but I'd say I have to go with those two. Which of the following areas is most important to society right now? I'm going to have to go either podcast, television, or social media, well it's probably more like social media 1 and then like television slash podcast 2. Print is also pretty important, so I mean, I'd say they're all pretty important, but probably social media number 1 overall. Can you give an example? Social media, like most people are on social media, especially younger people, and younger people are going to be the ones who shape the world eventually, so that's a lot of, that's a pretty big impact, especially with like Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, whatever, whatever they use. I don't think we'd be using Facebook no more, but you know what I mean, so, yeah. Now I'd like to ask you about the area of media industries and regulation. How knowledgeable do you consider yourself on media industries and regulation in general? Probably not high, probably like a good 3 maybe? What is the most important media regulation or industry today? Why do you feel so? Honestly, I have no idea. Media industry, I would say probably most influential, if we're going to go like, probably Disney, I guess, aren't they technically an industry because they're like the biggest overarching and they own a lot, so probably them. Which of the following affects society in the largest manner today? Ooh, that's going to be a tough one. Probably advertising, honestly. Advertising because you see it a lot everywhere, and now they have advertisements where they can like see what you do and look at, and it's like, oh, here's what you should buy, and yeah, here's what you should pretty much look at, so, yeah. Can you give an example? Oh, yeah, like Twitter, Instagram, they'd be like, they'd be listening, let's be real, they know what you're talking about, there'll be like an ad for it, and I'm like, why am I getting this ad for random shoes I was just talking about? And I'm like, okay, so, advertising's pretty big today. Finally, I'd like to ask you about the area of media effects. How knowledgeable do you consider yourself on media effects in general? Maybe like an okay five, maybe a six. What is the most important media effect issue today, and why do you feel so? If we're going media effects and issues, man, there's a lot of media effects, I mean, I feel like there's a lot of swaying of voting, and there's a lot of lying as well, and that's another thing with media, there's a lot of lies, and they can make people think certain ways and want them to do certain things, so, that's what I would say. Which of the media, which of the following media are slash is the most important problem facing the media consumers today? Definitely media roles in political and social activism, I feel like there's a lot of that, and then also, I feel like there's a lot of media consumption too, that's another thing, and it's just kind of like being forced upon everyone, and a lot of people don't even realize it, and they kind of are forced to, not forced to think a certain way, but they're definitely pushed to think certain ways, and like, hey, do what you want, but I just wouldn't let the media control me, that's just my personal thing. Why do you feel this way? Because media is stupid, it really is, at the end of the day, and if you let the media control how you think, then that's a problem, but hey, everybody does it, so. Can you give an example? News, news media, they make everybody think a certain way, not everybody, left, right, center, they're pushing you to think certain ways, certain ways about things, and I feel like it's backfiring now a little bit, if you see, like, currently, I feel like a lot of things are starting to change, there's a shift, but I'd say definitely the past 20 years, a lot of pushing you in a certain way of thinking, and doing things, and how we interact on daily life, what you wear, where you go to eat even, you know, just little things. Thank you for taking the time to be here with me today. I would like to conclude today by asking you one final question. What is one thing you hope to learn from this class? Anything I can, to be honest with you, just because, anything to add to my knowledge, because I'm trying to be the smartest I can, but definitely, I just want to learn about media effects and why, why they do certain things, why does the media push certain ways and different agendas, so, yeah. Sweet. There it is.
