The painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer was painted around 1665. It was owned by Vermeer's patron and later passed to his son-in-law. It was lost for two centuries and then appeared in an auction in The Hague in 1881. It was purchased by Andries de Stombe, a Dutch Navy officer and art collector, for a very low price. The painting is not a portrait, but a tronie, a characteristic style of Flemish painting in the 17th century. The protagonist is an unknown young woman, depicted with her bust, head, and shoulders. The body appears in profile, while the head is slightly turned towards the viewer. The painting is currently in the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague.
