The podcast episode is about the experiences of high school students. They discuss topics such as dealing with new principals and teachers, changes in schedules, and adjustments to the new lunch system. They also talk about the issue of fights in school and how spreading out lunch periods hasn't necessarily solved the problem. The students share their personal experiences with difficult teachers and the pressure of assignments and grades. They discuss the benefits of working on projects with peers and the challenges of balancing schoolwork with other classes. Overall, they reflect on the ups and downs of high school life. Alright, well this is a podcast called Honest High School. Alright, alright. Okay, so we're just gonna, we're gonna talk. So our topics are just, you know, what is high school? How has high school been so far? Man, it's been a rollercoaster. You know, kind of started just with dealing with new principal, new teachers and all that stuff and some teachers leaving. So, it's definitely one of those things where it's a, what would I say, definitely a change of some sort. Yeah, our new principal is coming from Western. Oh, for real? Yeah, so it's gonna be pretty interesting. I know who she is, but I don't really remember her. Yeah. So far high school, like from freshman year, the whole freshman year was just a real doozy. A lot of people said that it was gonna be like a whole bunch of stressful and a lot of work, but so far it just went by really quick. I barely even remember the year. I mean, it was, I said, you know, so much was happening and just like what you said, a new teacher coming from Western. So, I really, I don't remember the star. The star from last year? Yeah. Yeah, I think. You know, before I go in the classroom. I think the last year was, it just, when you went into freshman year, when we went in, like the very first semester I have, it's, I have the, like my math would be in the first period. Yeah. But because I'm in band, and after the first semester again in December, they switch everybody's band. Right, right. It's like one first band through third band, and people get moved up or moved down depending on how good they do. And so, that changes my whole schedule. I'll have biology in the first period sometimes. I don't have it. That's how I met you last year. I got moved. And I think it's also been an adjustment for everybody kind of sort of with the new lunch. Yeah. Whenever I heard it, I mean, I was out like more than half of this year. Yeah. Because I broke my leg. But it was kind of sort of like whenever I went to the lunchroom for the first time. I was like, okay, I'm ready to eat and all that stuff. All of a sudden, like I think, it only felt like 15 minutes to me. Yeah. It was only 20. Whistle blows and everybody just got up. Yeah. I think it was first semester, it was still 45 minutes. It was A, B, and C lunch. Now, they made it A, B, C, and D, but they're only 30 minutes. But in reality, you're facing like, okay, I'm getting out of the classroom. I'm going to walk down to the lunchroom. Exactly. Some people who are always Spanish class are going to be last in line. Yeah. And people who are in history class are going to be fastest there first in line. So, by the time everybody has gotten their food, it's like almost time. Yeah. People who are in the back are now just sitting down. They have like five minutes left to eat. Now, do you know the reasoning why they did it? It was because of fights, right? It was from what I think my geography teacher told me. Yeah. It was freshman fighting. Yeah, yeah. I can see how spreading them out would help it, but in reality, it's just like you're not really doing anything to the problem. You're really just kind of trying to make it spread out, because it can still happen. Yeah, like fights still happen. It's not one of those things where, like you said, I mean, I get what they were kind of sort of doing. Yeah. But it was kind of sort of like, I've seen some fights already happen at the lunch already. Yeah. So, what stops it from happening again? From what my geography teacher also said, the reasoning not only just to spread it out was because, like when people have that extra 15 minutes to just like, okay, they're done with eating. Yeah. Then people start to talk, and then some people start to get arguments in the last five minutes. Wow, yeah. That can be, and I've seen that happen. And one of my friends named DJ, but, I mean, I'm friends with DJ, but like he, from what I'm understanding, was he went and did something to her, and she just started slapping him. And it was, and it's like that was first semester. Now, they were both softness. Yeah. And so it's like, where does this fighting come from in terms of just, what's the reasoning? Because if someone, like we're in the bigger shoes, like we have the bigger patience for this type of stuff. Right. I do. If someone were to press up on me, I wouldn't really try and push back. I would, I submit's a weird word, but you know what I mean, just kind of resent the conflict. Yeah, just like try and talk it out or something like that, or be the bigger person kind of sort of type of deal. And I've gone through that kind of sort of with my freshman year, where it was like this one dude, he really wanted to fight me after we got out of football. And I was like, I'm never the type of fighting person. Like you said, I have patients where I just want to wait until that person is done. And then, you know, just kind of sort of like talk it out or find a solution. But, you know, it was kind of sort of like, I kind of went through this whole thing at Summit. That's the reason why I transferred to Mansfield. Yeah. So, I mean, it was kind of sort of like, either I fight him or not. That's basically what I was, I was just feeling. And, yeah, but I didn't understand, you know, it's kind of sort of just about the person and what type of people are there at lunch. I think what my dad told me about Summit was the neighborhood behind it, because you live right next to it. Yeah. So, the neighborhood behind it is very ghetto. I kind of use that term loosely, but I have a lot of friends who go there. There's still like, when I came to MHS, there's still tons of people I didn't know. Like five different schools funnel into it. And then same thing goes in Summit. So, it's like a mix of whoever gets that, whoever gets here. Now, I mean, I've never been to Summit. What's it like there at Summit? Well, I mean, don't get me wrong. Some of the teachers are good. You know, I've had some great teachers there. Some of the staff, it's, we can all say that no job is going to be perfect. You know, no people in the workplace is going to be perfect. But what I'm saying is, you know, to the teachers that pick that subject or that thing that they wanted to do, it's one of those things where, like, you pick this job and you want to do it. So, other than some teachers which are complaining about their jobs and, you know, saying, oh, I don't like these kids and all that stuff. I mean, he did major in this. I'm in my 8th grade year. I think it might be 8th or 6th. 7th grade, 7th grade, yeah. And my first English teacher was Miss Beck. And she was a sweetheart. Yeah. Really nice girl. I remember. Teacher. And she was just, she would have all the patience, all the kindness in her heart. She would be patient towards the students that wouldn't. Yeah. But it came to a point, I think it was a little bit after or a little bit before the end of the first semester, and she just broke down. Yeah. The kids were just terrible. They wouldn't stop talking. They wouldn't stop. Sometimes they even got into fights and, like, arguments in class. And, you know, being in 7th grade, the emotional, like, in your head, it can get to you. I had a guy, Cody, he moved classes before me. I moved because I just got tired. I couldn't do anything there. Yeah. It seemed like for the first 30 minutes of class, it was trying to just resolve a conflict, and then it would be English. Yeah. And it gives us less time to work on our assignments or, you know, get stuff done that they need us to get done. Yeah. And I, it was annoying because, like you said, 30 minutes after the teacher gives you the assignment, then you only have so much little time to do it. That's kind of how it is in my English class now in 10th grade. Yeah. We have book club. You have that, too, right? No, no, no, no, no. So the way book club works right now is a bunch of people pick five books, and then in your group, you just. . . Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's how we do it. is we get into class at like 125, and then from 125 to 2 o'clock, it's just kind of warm-up and reading. And then for like 20 minutes, she just yaps and says, okay, this is. . . I mean, no disrespect, but it's. . . I mean, we've learned onomatopoeia for like a 50-year period. Yeah, yeah. And by the time that we're done, it's like 30 minutes left, and then she'll say, due today, but then she'll. . . It's always a pattern. She'll always say, okay, this is due next class. And so it's like. . . What do you think about just like assignments? Like your whole life is dependent on like grades. Do you think that really applies? I think. . . I think projects. You know, sometimes projects are better than assignments. Because I think what we learn from projects, you know, we learn how to work with people together and all that stuff. And all about team building, rather with assignments, you know, it's kind of sort of like there's a due date. You have to get this done, and it's. . . Like a drag. Yeah, it's hard to balance it out with kind of sort of like. . . I feel like sometimes like my Spanish teacher doesn't know I have other classes to work with. And I think when you say about projects, that's totally true. I love doing projects with people. I love them when they're fun, when they're all interesting. Right. But sometimes like you're in chemistry, and you're having to learn about stoichiometry. And it's like. . . I mean, I'm good at that. I'm good at that. Yeah. And it's. . . But it's just. . . Your mind is like, okay, I have to do this. It's just the discipline part of school. Right. But when you get to a point when it's like. . . I'm looking right now at my situation. I'm looking. . . When I see an 80 on a quiz, I'm like. . . I'm like. . . Dang. Sucks. Like some people would rejoice that they got like a 75. Yeah. They're just like. . . Oh, I made it. Basically at the end of the day. Yeah. But I mean. . . Me, I think it's just the way I've been raised. I'm supposed to worry about my grades. I mean, I'm not trying to say. . . Okay, I shouldn't. . . I shouldn't care. Yeah. Because I did that once. And it really just. . . It didn't turn out. Now, there's some kids I'm friends with in class. They don't do any of their work. Like I have a friend named Greco. He just sleeps in math class. I know. He's funny. Like he's chill. Yeah. Like outside of classroom, he's a good girl. Yeah. That's like where you would like talk to him and all that stuff. Yeah. But whenever you're in the classroom. . . He's not someone I'm going to ask for answers to. Yeah. I have my boy Samuel. He'll be. . . He's good friends with me. And I ask him for answers. And he asks me for answers. We're good study partners. Yeah. But when it comes to like. . . Because it's four periods a day. And then eight periods in total. Because we have A and B days. Right. And it comes just like. . . You're kind of alternating. Yeah. You go to school on A day. And then you do your homework on A day. And then next to B day. You turn it in next to A day. Yeah. So it's like you're constantly crisscrossing every day. Having to keep up with stuff. And like I have a binder. Some people make fun of me for it. I say it's probably the best thing I can carry. Because it's. . . I have like these flaps. I have stuff that can collapse. Bro. Not all. . . I've seen people's backpacks with their papers. They're all like crumpled up. Just everywhere. Yeah. And I think so far. . . Like the school year has gone by. . . Since the beginning of. . . What is it? August. Right. And now. . . Up until like maybe last March. Yeah. It's gone by like that. It's just so. . . But now. . . These final two months. . . They've gone by so slow. Like it's like molasses. Yeah. It's kind of sort of like. . . It's torture. Like you're already waiting for summer to come here. Yeah. I think. . . It's okay. I mean it's not like anything. . . It's just slow. Yeah. It's like each day. . . You know what monotony means? Uh. . . Nah. Okay. It'll line me real quick. In simple terms. . . It's like doing the same thing over and over. Right. Right. But. . . In like the case of school. . . It's just. . . Okay. I'm waking up at. . . I wake up at like 5.20. I fall back asleep from until like 6. Yeah. My dad gets mad at me sometimes when I don't wake up. But. . . In. . . In my defense. . . It's just like. . . I wake up every day. Usually sometimes I'll wake up and I'll just go downstairs. Yeah. But. . . I'm waking up every day. . . Going up. . . Going to school at 7. And then. . . Up to 2.55. Come home. Work on work. Spend a little bit of free time. . . Maybe eat. Play some video games. Play. . . Watch a movie. Watch Fallout. You know. . . And then. . . Then it's just. . . You look at the time. Play. . . Repeat. Yeah. And then. . . Like. . . Oh. . . Like. . . Somebody was going to tell you. . . Like. . . Just make it to Friday. Yeah. It's like. . . I find myself sometimes doing that. Yeah. It's like. . . It's not a good thing to have. Because you should. . . Look forward to tomorrow. You try not to get stuck on that. . . It's kind of. . . Sort of like. . . The way. . . How school is. . . For us. . . You know. . . With the 20 minutes. . . And the whistle. . . And. . . They're working us nonstop. We're not able to be on our phones. And all that stuff. It kind of feels like a prison. But. . . I had my. . . The last. . . You know. . . Yesterday. . . On Friday. . . I had Spanish class. I love Coache now. He's such a good guy. He's. . . He can be a little annoying sometimes. But he's chill. Right. We had a sub. She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . . She. . .
