Professional athletes face numerous consequences on social media, including criticism, loss of privacy, and mental health issues. They must be cautious about what they post as even small mistakes can have significant repercussions. However, social media also allows athletes to establish their brand and connect with fans. Young athletes, in particular, may struggle with handling social media and may face negative consequences for their posts. Excessive use of social media can distract athletes and negatively impact their performance. Examples of athletes facing online abuse include Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka. It is important to promote a supportive and inclusive environment in sports to protect the mental health of young athletes. Hello, it is Omar Salahuddin speaking, suite number 2306029. In today's podcast, I'm by myself, Lee and Ellis, where we will speak about the consequences professional athletes face on social media in the digital world that we are in. I myself will cover the consequences that the athletes face due to social media, where I will show some examples which will be talked about further on in this podcast. Also, I will mention the relationship between the athletes' social media activities and their athletic performance, followed by the results that have been studied by professionals which demonstrate the result of athletes who use social media excessively before performing and will show if the use of excessive social media will affect their performance, which I will speak about further on in this podcast. Personally, I believe that professional athletes go through a lot of pressure in the digital world with all the criticism they receive on social media, which can be very hard to deal with as the digital world is so big, it is very hard to avoid being criticized, especially as a professional athlete. Another thing is that it is very hard for these athletes to control getting criticized on social media as most criticisms that professional athletes receive, the majority is from anonymous accounts, which is even harder for these athletes to deal with, which then limits the actions that they could be taking to avoid this and make it inevitable. Also, athletes have a bigger disadvantage on social media as they will face many more consequences due to being very famous on today's social media platforms as they bring in too much attention and fame, which they need to be very controlled on what they post because their posts will get millions of views on the social media platforms. So therefore, these athletes have to be very responsible when posting on social media as they will face little privacy when posting as their posts will get millions of views so they need to be careful on what they post as any little mistake they do, whether it's a big or small mistake, these athletes are always at risk of facing consequences which can lead them to mental health if they don't know how to deal with the hate comments received from anonymous accounts and can also be put in a position of losing their career. On the other side, in the article I researched, which is called Professional Athletes' Social Media Use and Player Performance, which is evidence from the National Football League, I found that social media has become a crucial tool for professional and top athletes to establish their brand and connect with their fans, which is mentioned by Cornish and Larkin 2014, ET Wallace 2011. Following up on this, in my opinion, I believe it can also benefit the athletes as they are able to showcase their fancy brands and show off more of their lifestyle and also allows them to connect with their fans through social media as they have fans who look up to these athletes and are their role model, which is not only the bad side that athletes have faced on social media as they have many benefits of its use. Another point to mention, reflecting back on the article, is that it is harder for younger athletes to handle their social media as young professional athletes lack the understanding of the consequences they can face of their social media posts, as De Veronica 2017 identified that high school professional athletes have lost their college scholarships and professional sports opportunities due to their misuse of social media. In the article that I researched, it also explains that, in the recent years, NFL players have drawn criticism for their content of posts, said Sanson, Frederick, and Stokes in 2016, and players have been fined by their teams for the content of their posts, which is stated by Stout 2014, Rapp 2017, and Assett 2019. Another interesting point which I found in the chapter in the article, which explained the relationship between athletes' social media activity in their athletic performance, where it explains that there are two elements to the athlete's social media activity. Firstly, it is the quantity, and secondly, it is the content the athletes go through on their social media which can either determine or influence the player's performance. Which mentions that professional athletes who post a high volume on social media before a game are at risk of becoming distracted, which there is actually a study shown on the article that excessive use of social media can have a negative impact on the athlete's performance, which is another consequence professional athletes face, stated by them, JHETL 2021. A sporting example that I will give is that, in a Manchester United match in 2021, Manchester United lost to Villarreal on penalties, which caused them to lose the final. Due to that, the football player Marcus Rashford claimed that after the match he received around 70 slurs of racial abuse towards him due to the fact that the team he played for, Manchester United, lost, which is stated by an article by Sky Sports in 2021. Even though Marcus Rashford scored his penalty, he still had to face the consequences of getting these racial comments towards him in his social media profile, just because his team lost, which is upsetting in today's digital world for these professional athletes. Even though he didn't do anything wrong, but his team still lost, he still faced these racial comments and abuse towards him on his social media profile, which happens very often to all athletes on social media and have to learn how to deal with it. Hello, my name is Ellis Wilson and my student number is 2306423. Today I will be discussing the consequences that athletes face as a result of their usage of social media. The goal of the study, CEPSTA 2020, was to investigate the connection between young athletes' use of social media, psychological characteristics and virtual communication. Understanding social media's impact on athletes' mental health is essential given its extensive influence on modern life, particularly among younger generations. The study delved into how virtual communication channels, such as social media platforms, affect the psychological traits of young athletes. It examined factors such as self-esteem, self-efficiency, anxiety and depression in relation to their online interactions. The findings shed light on the complex interplay between virtual communication and athletes' psychological states. One of the key aspects of the study was the examination of the amount of the time young athletes dedicate to social media. This included not only the duration of their online activity, but also the nature of their interactions and the platforms. By analysing these patterns, researchers aimed to identify potential correlations between social media usage and psychological traits among athletes. The study likely highlighted the importance of moderation and mindful engagement with social media for young athletes. Excessive time spent on these platforms could potentially lead to negative outcomes, such as increased anxiety or decreased self-esteem, particularly if athletes compare themselves to others or face online harassment or criticism. Moreover, the study might have underscored the need for interventions or guidelines to promote healthy social media habits among young athletes. This could involve education on digital literacy, strategies for coping with online stresses and fostering a supportive online environment within sports communities. Overall, such a study shed light on complex interactions between virtual communication, psychological qualities and social media use among young athletes. Understanding these interactions enables coaches, parents and athletes to manage a good and balanced approach to internet involvement whilst protecting their mental health. Darwin 2017 explores the complex connections between exercise and self-demand by letting Darwin investigate how people understand and internalise the demands of them when engaging in physical activity. Understanding the psychological effects of self-demanding physical activity is critical, particularly for young athletes. They frequently endure great pressures to perform well, either from their coaches, teammates or even themselves. This pressure can lead to anxiety and self-doubt, compromising performance levels as well as enjoyment of the sport. Furthermore, the rise of social media has added new dimensions to the issues that young athletes face. Farrington et al. 2014 looked into how young athletes could face online bullying or bad remarks from fans if their performance forced short of expectations. Individuals, notably young athletes, are subjected to scrutiny and criticism on social media sites, which can amplify the pressure they already feel. An example of a young athlete who faced online backlash and scrutiny due to performance is England footballer Tukayo Saka. Saka, just 19 years old at the time, faced significant backlash after missing a crucial penalty during the UEFA Euro 2020 final for England. The retaliation against Saka drew considerable condemnation from football fans, who understood the unfairness and toxicity of the internet abuse. Many demanded increased accountability and steps to address internet harassment in the world of sport. In this digital age, the impact of online bullying on young athletes cannot be understated. It can have serious consequences for their mental health and wellbeing, leading to decreased self-esteem, increased stress and even withdrawal from sports participation altogether. To address these challenges, it's essential to promote a supportive and inclusive environment in sports and physical activity settings. Coaches, parents and peers play a critical role in fostering positive attitudes and providing encouragement to young athletes, regardless of their performance. Additionally, educating young athletes about potential risks of social media and providing strategies to cope with online negativity can help mitigate its harmful effects. In conclusion, I believe that today's digital world has improved as now social media platforms have taken some action. Athletes are able to restrict their comments and make their accounts private on social media platforms, which will help them reduce the level of abuse they receive on social media, therefore reducing the level of consequences they may face. Hello, this is now Lee Sosa speaking, student number 2306116. I'm going to start talking about the consequences professional athletes face on social media in the digital world by discussing the article titled Sports Fans Responsive on Social Media to Professional Athletes' Known Violations. Information about professional athletes claimed violations from previous years, whether they occurred inside or outside of a professional sport environment, was selected on purpose to represent the insulting approaches used by users on social media. In their comments, a number of people took various amounts of responsibility for the players' violations. First after the athletes were disciplined by the sports organizations, several fans questioned the players' responsibility and involvement in the claimed violations, blaming other components instead. The research results showed that supporters encouraged, raised and showed understanding for an athlete, in addition to trying to understand and protect his actions, as stated by Sanderson and Edwards, 2014. But fans also criticized the athlete for breaking the rules, calling it a weakness in his character. They said things like the athlete lacked self-control and only wanted attention from the media. The world of digital media has a lot of consequences. In order to prevent problems that could damage their professional standing and ruin their careers, athletes must practice responsibility when controlling their online profiles. Potential public criticism and violence are two of the most quick effects that athletes deal with on social media. Millions of people can view every post, comment and interaction, which may cause arguments and negativity. A simple mistake can turn into a major problem in the Internet age, damaging an athlete's name and having an impact on contracts, team relationships and the future. In a positive way, social media sites like Twitter, Instagram and TikTok give athletes the chance to interact with fans directly, develop their personal brands and expand their work on a community. Athletes can use social media as an effective platform for self-promotion to gain sponsorships and advertisements, which will increase the standing of living even after their sporting careers end. Using an article that BBC News published on 14 July 2021 and England professional footballer Jadon Sancho as an example, after the Euro 2020 final loss by Italy, where he claims that after facing racial insults, it will never win. A football player's career will certainly be harmed if racist remarks are made about on social media after he missed a penalty in a European final. The player was already extremely anxious about playing in the final. Jadon Sancho managed the situation incredibly professionally after the game, as one of his social media posts says, to all the young people who have received similar abuse, hold your heads up high and keep chasing the dream. I feel that myself, Ellis Anumba, could conclude that professional athletes must take an intelligent approach to social media communication in order to reduce any negative effects on opportunities and risks that the digital world provides. I hope you enjoyed our podcast about the consequences athletes face on social media in a digital world, done by myself, Omar and Ellis. Thank you for listening.
