Yes, welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Today, we're gonna talk about The Boy in Striped Pajamas Book vs. Film Yes We are here with Sindri, Theo and Jonas Hello, hello So, Jonas You read the book and watched the movie, right? Yes What were some things you read in the book that you didn't see in the movie? Yes, there was actually plenty of scenes that was in the book that was not in the movie Amongst others, it was that the grandfather Bruno's grandfather did not visit the camp in the book But did visit the camp in the movie And the grandmother did not die of bombing But of just getting ill in the book So, in the film, it was way too dramatic for her death Yes, but I think that's very necessary because in the movie, you don't want to get bored Yes, it gets even more tragic when she dies from the bombing Yes, because then she's killed Yes, because of the war and not just the flu or something So, you could say that it's a message behind the film about war What I also noticed was that when she died, there was a card with Adolf Hitler's signature on it And the mother said that she wouldn't want it there Yes, but the father insisted I'm pretty sure that the grandmother was against the right-wing ideologies Yes, she was much more against ideologies in the book She was more clear about her meanings in the book rather than in the movie In the movie, we had one scene with her Telling about what she thought about her son being a commandant for the Nazis What do you think about this, Till? What do you mean now? That the grandmother was against the right-wing ideologies I think that wouldn't work in their country, if that's what you mean She lives in a country where the right-wing is how they live Do you think Bruno was very naive in the movie? Do you think he's like that in the book too? Yes, I haven't read the book, but I think he's the same character in the book and the film Can you confirm? I think he was much more open in the book Because in the movie he's kind of a bit dumb In the book you get to know all of his thoughts And what he's thinking all the time So you get to know him better And understand how he experiences what is happening Do you think there were any changes in the characters between the book and the movie? Did the characters look or act different from what you have imagined? I think the father had a very cold personality And he wasn't really hanging out with his kids But in the movie they get the parts where the kids come to his office But he seems much more friendlier in the movie In the book he seems more strict Both Bruno's mother and father were much more strict About how he should talk and where he should go and not go And in the movie both Bruno's mother and father were more happy In the book they also said to Bruno strictly not to go to the striped pyjamas people Or go near that camp But I didn't recollect seeing them saying to him that he shouldn't go there They only said it's just a farm They never said don't go there They acted like they were just strange people And he shouldn't think about going to them But they didn't hinder him from doing so And the environment at the camp was different from the book and the movie Because in the book there was just one big fence around everything And one section that divided the Jews from the commanders and soldiers Because it was two different camps And they did not call it Auschwitz I think in the movie No, in the movie it's not Auschwitz, it's some other camp But I think that might be because filming at Auschwitz might not be a good thing to do Yeah, I agree with that It is much more emotional for a lot of people A lot of people died They probably didn't want it to be based on a real place Or they just moved it It is a fictional story so it wouldn't make sense There would have been a lot of angry people around if they actually used Auschwitz to make the movie So it's much more to tell the story than to show where they lived Do you think the book was better than the movie? Yeah, I would say so You get a better picture of the storyline and what is happening And the characters in the book than you do in the movie The movie feels kind of speeded up Yes, it's very sped up and it didn't get the side stories Like when Bruno went to the fridge to get some food for Schmuel When he was cleaning up the glasses, he just gave him some food Yes, and the whole scene of Bruno And also in the book there was a scene where Maria the maid was sitting or talking to Bruno in his room Where she talked about Pavel and that he was a doctor Yes And the whole scene of Bruno getting the idea of making a swing with a tire And the part where he actually hangs up and makes the swing is just wiped totally away And we were rather just focusing on Gretel and Leutnant Kotler Rather than being with Bruno But in the movie you can see he got the idea Because he laid under a tree and looked up and the camera was dancing under the tree And he could hear the music Maybe they didn't say his thoughts out loud It would be not as serious I think that would maybe be a better way to base it off of the book If you just take his thoughts and make it just like the book You have this narrator or the actor that just talks in the background With this faded type of voice in his head And that you live his life Because in the book it's like watching Bruno or watching the war from his perspective Nothing else So you think that the movie could have been better If the people that made the movie followed the storyline of the book more sloppily Yes, I think that would work much better And also what annoyed me a bit was the last scene When they went looking for everyone And when Bruno went to the gas chamber In the book it was described as very rainy and muddy when he arrived there And there was a gap in the fence And he didn't have to bring a shovel And in the movie it was dry and then started raining In the book it was much more sad, it was rainy, it was muddy He had to walk bare feet, as all of them both have shoes in the movie Yes, the atmosphere in the movie was much better It was a bit more delightful He had a friendlier atmosphere there than in the book Where it was raining, everything was muddy He had to lay his clothes in the mud And then go in the mud to get under the fence And they looked for Shmuel's father much longer in the book as well They did not get in the gas chamber before at night In the book he also said that it was raining so much That he almost decided to go back home halfway on the way to the camp Would you read the book if you had a chance, Theo? If, now that you say the book is much better than the film And it's missing a lot, I think I would read it Because from your perspective the movie wasn't sped up It felt like a good movie But if you had read the book you would have understood that Maybe the book was the better option And there's missing a lot of plot The actors didn't like it The book hyped me up to the movie And then the actors didn't do it as well as the characters in the book But did anyone notice anything in the movie that was not in the book that they have changed And just added to the story? Well, you did mention it at the start The grandma was bombed Grandpa came to visit at the camp And the scene where Pavel did bandage Bruno Then they also talked for quite a bit Which they didn't do in the movie, did they? He just said he's a doctor Not much more than that They did not get any deeper And when the mother came into the kitchen In the book she said that They should tell the father and the older soldiers that it was her that helped Bruno and not Pavel But I have a question for you In the movie you have music to create suspense and drama But in the book how do you feel? Was there any drama when you read? No, it's just the way the author wrote the book You imagine this sad place In the book they describe the house as kind of sad and run down, beat down house It's a continuing dark place It's continuously just sad through the whole story It's almost like in Breaking Bad when they go to Mexico Everything becomes orange, it's like that But everything becomes black and white That's how the vibe felt in Poland In the movie when they added just the music and all the colors Everything just didn't feel as depressing But in the book did the father get the soldiers to go look for Bruno? Like they did in the film? No, it didn't say clearly Loudly in the book you can imagine that they did In the book the father traced back the steps of Bruno A couple of days later after he went missing I think a day or two later He saw the opening in the fence and his clothes there And his clothes in the mud It was much much later he was going looking He did not look with the mother or Grotel or any soldiers at all So the scene wasn't that dramatic as in the film He didn't feel a surge, he wasn't roaming or anything I think that's right Basically just following his tracks He didn't go into the camp and scream Bruno No, he didn't It was a better ending in the book than in the movie It wasn't too dramatic in the movie I think It was more realistic and a little bit better in the film Because in the movie it was really dramatic Everyone was running And then he screams Yes Was that the ending of the book? He just found his clothes? Yes Bruno got everything brushed They just said And then no one did ever hear from Bruno again Some days later after mother and Grotel had left The father was going around just looking for him It's sort of in the movie It is set up so that the father and mother and the characters involved Is going to feel how the war affects their family Is it worth fighting this war when your own family gets so badly hurt? It's more like that in the movie than it is in the book The grandmother only died from the flu And then Bruno died It's more set up to father and mother regretting becoming a part in the war in the movie That's all That sums it up, doesn't it? Yes Do you think What would you rather do? Watch the movie or read the book again? First or again? Again Read the book It took much longer time to read the book And I sort of remember vaguely everything that happens in the book But I feel like I remember most of what happens in the book and the movies I would actually not read any of them Not now but maybe later in Sometime when I have forgot some of the scenarios I found the film to be kind of empty So what I've heard about the book I think I would read the book The book is going to give some more insight on what really happened And what the story is supposed to tell you So I think it's best to read the book before watching the movie You may be a little bit disappointed by the movie But the book gives you a very clear picture of how the storyline really is Do you think there was any upsides with the movie? Was there any scenarios or happenings in the movie that was better than the book? I wouldn't really be very biased to know what to answer there Because in the book you imagine yourself what happens And you see this picture in your head how everything is based off And that's just how you imagine things And when a movie just decides to imagine it for you It sort of changes what you have imagined What you have in mind Like the house at the camp I imagined it in my head to be black, tall and a bit run down and made out of wood Actually the house was more modern in the movie I do remember that the staircase in the book I do remember it like it is in the movie Like this half-spiraling staircase And I experienced the house in the book was much more It was not as modern, it was much older Like a hut It looked very dull And it was not as fancy as the house they had in Berlin In the book the mother and Gretel and Bruno were actually leaving to go back to Berlin But in the movie they were going to another place Because it was not safe in Berlin Yeah, they went to their aunt But I think they had to go there because the bombing Which they also added in the movie Happened in Berlin So they couldn't send them back to the ruins of their home They added it though maybe because it was more realistic That the bombing happened Yes, indeed There was a lot of bombing in Germany Yeah, that's actually quite realistic And it is smart to not send them back to Berlin Because that's a big city that attracts much attention from the... Alliance what? The enemies Their enemies So it's much smarter to send them away to a place where Not so many people are living Yes, that sums it up Our thoughts about the books and films Really good discussion Thank you for listening See you next I don't think there's going to be a next time Bye Bye
