Mia, a third-year student at TSUF, discusses the song "Se Una Vez" by Selena Quintanilla. The song represents Mexican culture in America and how Mexican-Americans honor their heritage. Selena, a Tejano artist from Texas, released the song in 1994 as part of the album "Amor Prohibido." Despite being a Tejano artist, Selena incorporated mariachi-inspired elements into the song, such as instrumentation and fast tempo. She is known as the queen of Tejano music but her music spans various genres. "Se Una Vez" is not her biggest hit, but it showcases the transition of traditional Mexican music to modern times. Hi listeners, my name is Mia. I'm a third year at TSUF and I'm currently taking Music of Mexico. This class is interesting as it inspects the culture of Mexico through musical aspects and the relevancy of music during historical moments. For this podcast, I will be talking about Selena Quintanilla's song, Se Una Vez. Okay, let's start. Se Una Vez is a single that demonstrates Mexican culture within America and how Mexican-Americans honor their lineage. Se Una Vez was released in 1994, a part of the popular Spanish album Amor Prohibido, released by artist Selena and produced by her brother, A.B. Quintanilla. Selena is a Mexican-American artist born and raised in Texas, classifying her as a Tejano artist. Tejano music is a genre that originated in the American border state of Texas. Due to Texas being a border state, many immigrants resided there, making Mexican culture popular within the state. Despite the song, Se Una Vez, being performed by Tejano artists, the single held onto mariachi-inspired aspects such as instrumental makeup, the same fast tempo, and romantic symbolism. For example, in the song, Se Una Vez, Selena uses instruments such as guitars and trumpets to depict her love and suffering. This is all common within mariachi singles, along with the fast tempo present in the song and her strong, clear voice. Interestingly, Selena Quintanilla is referred to as the queen of Tejano music, however her music spans across genres such as cumbia, folksy mariachi, tarantella, and pop. Se Una Vez is not Selena's biggest hit. For example, some of her biggest hits are Como La Flor, Amor Prohibido, and Dreaming of You, an English single. Selena has fans across Mexico and America, which is why I think she's a perfect example to illustrate how you do not have to be from Mexico to impact Mexican culture, and why she's such a good example to illustrate the transition of traditional Mexican music to modern times, as she used a lot of electrophones within her music as well. Thank you all for listening!
