To help more students attend school regularly, we need support from the school, community, and district. The school should set up safe meeting spots for students and volunteers to walk to school together. Volunteers, including parents, can take turns walking the students. Background checks would be done on volunteers to ensure safety. This plan aligns with NEPS standards for teacher commitment and professional obligations. To meet the goal of helping more students attend school on a daily basis, we will need assistance and support from the school as a whole, the community, and the school district. The school will need to set up safe meeting spots within the nearby neighborhoods where the students and volunteers will meet at specific times in the morning to begin the walk to school. The school will also need to set up designated spots at dismissal to walk students to the neighborhood spots at the end of the school day where they will then go to their own home. We will need volunteers from the community to walk the students to and from school safely. This volunteer system could be similar to that of a carpool. Parents could take turns rotating when they volunteer. For example, a parent could walk the students each morning for a week during one month and another parent could walk students home from school one week out of the same month. If parents are unable to volunteer their time due to work schedules or other commitments, other volunteers from the community would be needed. As these volunteers will be interacting with students on a daily basis, we would need to have a background check done on them. This is something that the district could help facilitate to ensure the safety of all of the students. This portion of the plan will reach NEPS Standard 1, Commitment to School Community, Indicators 1, 2, and 3. The teacher takes an active role on the instructional team and collaborates with colleagues to improve instruction for all students. The teacher takes an active role in building professional culture that supports school and district initiatives. And the teacher takes an active role in cultivating a safe, learning-centered school culture and community that maintains high expectations for all students. Also, the NEPS Standard 3, Professional Obligations Indicator 2, the teacher models integrity in all interactions with colleagues, students, families, and the community.
