The school wants to reduce chronic absenteeism. Transportation is a problem, especially for elementary students walking on a busy road. They need volunteers to walk with students to and from school. This plan will be evaluated by comparing attendance records before and after. It aligns with standards for teacher involvement in the school community and family engagement. The goal of this family engagement plan is to put a stop to the chronic absenteeism rate at our school. The biggest issue is transportation, whether by bus or by walking. We have several students that are able to walk to school, but due to having to walk down a busy road to reach the school, many students are unable to walk without adult supervision, as these students are in elementary school. We are in need of volunteers within the community that could walk students to school in the morning and home from school in the afternoon. We will set up common meeting places for the students in the neighborhoods to walk to and meet the volunteers to ensure that the students are safe walking the remaining way to school. We will know quickly on how many students this would reach as the students would be at the school more frequently, taking daily attendance that the teachers and school staff could then compare to the attendance records prior to initiating this plan, which show the overall effectiveness. As the school year progresses, we would need reliable volunteers to see a consistent decrease in the chronic absenteeism rate at this school site. This portion of the plan will reach NEPF Standard 1, Commitment to School Community Indicator 3. The teacher takes an active role in cultivating a safe, learning-centered school culture and community that maintains high expectations for all students. Also, the NEPF Standard 4, Family Engagement Indicator 3. The teacher informs and connects families and students to opportunities and services according to student needs.
