The speaker had a difficult time in college due to financial struggles with textbooks. They took semesters off to work and had limited course options. They have been using Open Educational Resources (OERs) to help their students save money. However, for one course, there were no openly licensed resources available, so they decided to create their own. They dedicated time over the summer to work on it, using the Pressbooks platform. They found it easy to use and now need to focus on editing and refining the material. Creating their own resources allows them to be intentional with the content and make changes as needed in future semesters. Thanks for having me. Sure. Personally, I had a rocky college career. I struggled affording textbooks and that caused me to have to take semesters off to work and informed what courses I could take. And when. For years I've worked with OERs to help offset expenses for my students. But for one particular course, nothing really exists licensed openly. So I decided to create it myself. Yeah, I have been working on portions of it over the past few years, but dedicated time over the summer. I would set a timer every morning to write. That allowed me the rest of the day to play catch with my kids and enjoy my summer as well. The Pressbooks platform was extremely easy to use, so I didn't have problems there. Now will come the harder parts of editing and polishing it into a more final form. Yes, definitely, creating original materials has allowed me to be intentional with the images and examples I use. I also love the flexibility to change out examples and other content as the semesters pass.
