Microcelebrities are ordinary people who become famous within a specific community on social media. They share content about their interests and gain influence. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow them to showcase their talents and connect with like-minded individuals. People follow microcelebrities because they are authentic and relatable. A guest named Aidan shares his experience of becoming a microcelebrity through soccer videos on TikTok. Balancing social media with offline life can be challenging. Microcelebrities are reshaping fame by focusing on impact and authenticity rather than just numbers of followers. Hello everyone, and welcome back to MADS Media, the podcast where we cover all things social media. I'm your host, Madison Barry, and today we'll be diving into the topic of microcelebrities. So, what really is a microcelebrity, and how could you become one? Before we jump in, let's clarify what we mean by microcelebrities. A microcelebrity is a person known as famous within a niche group of users on a social media platform. In other words, it is when an ordinary person shows photos, videos, and or blogs about a specific interest that they have, and as a result, they become influential and well-known within a chosen community. So, think about the people that you follow on social media. Maybe you follow a cooking influencer to learn recipes and tips for the kitchen. You may consider them famous, but someone who does not like cooking may never know who this person is. It's truly fascinating how social media plays such a significant role in the rise of microcelebrities. Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube give individuals the tools to showcase their talents and interests. With the ability to post online, microcelebrities can create and inspire a community of people with alike interests. Social media users follow microcelebrities because they are likely to feel more like a friend than a celebrity. In other words, people are drawn to their authenticity. The authenticity of microcelebrities often offers a more genuine and relatable experience for users than traditional celebrities. Now, to talk more in depth about microcelebrities, I would like to welcome Aidan Carbonini to join us. Aidan is a microcelebrity and athlete who creates content about his passion for soccer. Hello, Aidan. Welcome to the MADS Media Podcast. Thank you for joining us today. Hello, Madison. Thank you. I'm happy to be here. So, please, share with us. How did you get involved in social media? We would love to hear your story. Of course. Well, it all started in college when I decided to post a video on TikTok of me juggling a soccer ball to just regular music. The video went absolutely viral. People were commenting, asking for tutorials, and just about who I was. And I can't lie, I loved the community and teaching others about my skills. Wow, that's amazing. So, how long did it take you to realize that you had become a microcelebrity? That's a tough one. I didn't realize it for quite a while. It was not until I was at a revolution soccer game, probably about six months after I started on social media, and someone came up to me to say hello, and they recognized me. And this really made me realize that I was making an impact on others and influencing them. That's awesome. It is definitely a special feeling to know that you're positively impacting others. So, has there been any challenges after becoming a microcelebrity? Yes. Influencing others always comes with its challenges along the way. There's a lot of positive factors, but there's also challenges. One big challenge for me was balancing social media with my life offline. I also work full-time in marketing, so between that, social media, and keeping up with relationships, it's a lot to balance. An important aspect of being a microcelebrity is consistency, which requires vigilance and authenticity. It's definitely challenging because it's likely for other aspects of life to get in the way. That is a great point to consider and very important to share with our listeners. Well, thank you very much, Aiden, for joining us and sharing your story. No problem. Thank you for having me. As we wrap up today's episode, it's clear that microcelebrities are reshaping the concept of fame. It's not just about numbers. It's about impact and authenticity. Whether they're sharing beauty tips, fitness routines, insights about a specific subculture, microcelebrities have proven that you don't need millions of followers to make meaningful impact. To our listeners, thank you for joining me on this exploration of microcelebrities. If you enjoyed the episode, don't forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share with your friends. Until next time, I'm Madison Berry, and this is MADS Media.
