Anthony Daly's death was connected to Burke's attempted murder, part of suppressing the local society. Daly sensed danger after finding mare coins and was later arrested and jailed. Twenty-six ribbon men were tried and sentenced, including Daly. During his trial, Daly's cousin refused to testify, despite Anthony's plea for his help. Although local recounts of Daly's untimely death are directly linked to Burke's attempted murder, it appears that he was executed in an attempt to quash the local urban society and to put fear into the towns. After discovering four mare coins while counting his defence collection, Daly feared that his life was at risk, and he was correct. Two weeks later, on March the 15th, Daly was arrested and incarcerated in Galway Jail. Twenty-six men, identified as ribbon men, were tried in Galway on the 23rd and 24th of March and sentenced to penal servitude for seven years. Daly's trial was on the 31st of March. To maintain a fair trial, the court had three informers give evidence. One of these, Dennis Daly, was a cousin of Anthony's and an esteemed landlord. Anthony called on Dennis to testify for him and spare his life. However, Dennis refused.
