Anthony Daly, born in 1786, was a carpenter and leader of the Risenmen in Duke Aaron. Despite working for James Hardyman Burke, who he allegedly tried to kill, Daly organized arms raids and assisted commandos in fighting against landlords like James Daly. The Risenmen posed a threat to James Daly, who was known for his lack of empathy towards tenants and support for the Tory party. Anthony's brother, Hugh, was reportedly killed by estate workmen in 1819. Anthony Daly was born in the year 1786 in the Caravan area outside of Crockwell. Known to have been an athletic man, he lost sight in the night in a hurling match. A carpenter, Daly farmed a smallholding at Duke Aaron, the town that he was born in. As a carpenter, he qualified as leader of the Risenmen. He also worked for the man he was supposed to have attempted to kill, James Hardyman Burke of St Clarence. As a captain, Daly would have organised arms raids, connections and meetings, and primarily assisting the clutches of commandos. It was purposely that Daly joined the Society, because James Daly, a landlord based at Dunfamille, had victimed him from his holding. This landlord was a ruthless figure who had no empathy towards the rights of his tenants, a protestant he supported the Tory party. The Risenmen were a danger to him and his estate. Anthony Daly's brother, Hugh, was supposedly beaten to death by the workmen on the estate in September 1819.
