The speaker is expressing their dissatisfaction with their current state. They are unable to do something and are constantly thirsty. They describe themselves as an allergic bird who finds worms dirty and disturbing. They envy someone who is cheerful and wishes they were like them. They prefer a bird that is less talkative. I think I'm worse. I can't turn on my perch. And I'm permanently thirsty. Burning, burning. It's murder. I'm allergic to worms. Dirty, squirming worms. What an absurd bird. You're very chirpy, sir. I wish I were. All this fervid verse, I find it disturbing so early. I prefer a less wordy bird.
