A train crashed near Clifton Hill station in Eltham. The front carriage tipped over and caught fire, causing chaos. Two cars at a level crossing were also involved. Some believe something was placed on the tracks. The injured were taken to Afro Hospital, where one person died and three are in surgery. Witnesses saw the front carriage separate from the rest of the train and fall over. The fire was billowing, and emergency services arrived. A young man died, but his name hasn't been released. The 742 was travelling to Eltham when it crashed 200 metres short of the platform at Clifton Hill. The front carriage tripped onto its side and a small fire broke out in the driver's compartment. The stationmaster, Tony Padilla, says two cars at the level crossing were also involved in the incident. Oh look, it was just a mess, you know, it was complete chaos and no one knew what was happening. I reckon someone's put something on the tracks and all that. The injured were taken to the Afro Hospital in the city where one later died. Three are currently in surgery. Paula Adams, who was cycling towards the crossing, witnessed the crash. And then as I got closer, the noise was just astounding. And when I got there, the front carriage had separated from the rest of the train and had fallen over. I couldn't even see the engine from where I was, so the fire was billowing from the front and pretty soon a fire engine arrived and there were a few other ambulances came. A spokesperson for Metro confirms a young man is dead, but his name is not being released at this stage. Christine Howe reporting from Deakin College News.
