The Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act of 1974 aims to prevent and control water pollution. It defines water pollution as the contamination or alteration of water's physical, chemical, and biological properties, including the discharge of sewage water. The act establishes a control board, known as the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), which guides and maintains water quality standards. Each state also has its own pollution control board, directed by the CPCB. The act imposes penalties, such as imprisonment or fines, for those who pollute water sources.
