The speaker introduces the first episode of Design Cinema and discusses the concept design industry. They talk about the history of the industry and how it has changed over time. They mention that many students are interested in entering the concept design industry, but may not fully understand what it entails. The speaker compares the perception of concept art to that of video games, explaining that some students may choose concept art because they think it is easy and fun, without realizing the level of difficulty involved. They also mention that concept art involves more than just drawing and painting, and discuss the analogy of buying a sports car to illustrate the idea that people may be attracted to concept art for its flashy and expensive image. 2nd July 2018 Hi everybody and welcome to the first episode of Design Cinema, the Bocca Edition This is Phan Du speaking and if you put your headset outside I hope to make this episode clear about 2 hours of my time here to record for you I have no idea how long this is This is 1.4 Probably over an hour I guess because it's podcast So let's speak freely and relax Just pretend you're in a classroom here And just randomly speak a bunch of things related to this episode No video I'm hopefully trying to make it interesting as possible for you guys I've never done a podcast before ever So this is going to be an experiment for all of us here So I'm going to apologize ahead of time for any guy with hair coughing and so forth Because I try not to edit too much I just make it as raw as possible So you guys have a true sense of what it's like to have a conversation Alright, so let's jump into this episode And by the way, I gotta speak a lot slower here because there's no video Let's make sure the audio is nice and clear for everyone to hear And speaking slowly actually is a challenge for me Also you're speaking at a really fast rate So I have to constantly remind myself to slow it down, breathe, relax So you guys don't miss anything that I'm going to say here Alright, for the first episode I thought it would be a good idea to talk about concept design industry Because we've got a lot of students that are in the show Of course, we have a lot of professionals as well But I think we have a lot of students who are trying to make their way into the concept design industry But yeah, at the same time, the industry is quite hidden Now with the internet, Facebook, all these kind of things, all the art style, all these posts This is a little bit exposed before But the exposure sometimes is not entirely 100% either So what I want to do about this episode is talk about a few things Number one, a little bit history of the concept design industry In terms of from my point of view, how I see it changing and grow Then I'm going to head into how do you actually get in What are your chances? What are the odds? What are you actually prepared for? And what do you actually do, right? I'm going to a section which if you actually get in as a concept artist What do you do every day and early? What do you prepare for? In terms of portfolio or even things like what do you work in In the meantime, you get yourself ready for this business Alright, so let's talk a little bit about history What is this episode? While I'm studying in this school in 2009 Most of the students who applied to our school had a pretty good understanding About the concept of artworks They have done the research There are other books They have researched on the internet And kind of had a good idea On what they are heading into So we don't have to worry about them Okay, you get it You're here You know what this business is about You know the odds You know what you do every day Perfect Now, come today, 7 years later We're starting to get a small percentage of students who apply We have absolutely no idea What this industry actually is about About maybe 10% of the students who apply Just absolutely no idea But yeah, they have wonderful students With, in my opinion Extremely difficult job or career path So you have to ask What is it to do this? And I actually think This has to do with the popularity of the video games As well as film in the past 10 years Fast back to, you know 1990s or even early 2000s Before YouTube came along Before social media became a giant enormous thing That is kind of worldwide now Video games and films were quite exposed In terms of production In terms of what goes on behind the scenes And also, especially in the video game side You'll be seeing that Very nerdy business to be in You tell your friends You're working on a big video game at present You automatically get an assumption That you're a big nerd or geek And things like that Just wasn't very cool to be in gaming And then, somewhere in 2010, 2011 Where there's loads of video games that got released For example Skyrim and Fallout All these games received a lot of attention On the internet and the product game industry to mention I think that's it Back to that Only the nerds and most hardcore gamers Would know about these games But then You see on television You start to see video blogs on YouTube Having millions of followers Just talking about video games Skyrim alone Probably had I guess 30, 40 million followers Throughout all the channels on YouTube So now you have influx or exposure of video games To the mainstream audience And no longer is the video game industry as nerdy I think now, you know It's more cool to work in games So back to the poor students I think that small percentage of students who apply Would be like Oh, video games are cool I want to do it Which one will job suitable to get in There are three areas Programmer Sound design Music and animation VFX Texture And then there's concept art And I think a lot of them tend to choose concept art Because from the outside world This looks really fun and maybe Even perceived as easy Because all I need is a piece of paper or photoshop I walk on top of it Boom, you're in You're making concept art You don't have to study the hard C++ code You don't have to know Maya Animation and curves And things like that You don't have to learn this Because you need software required to become good to the art It just seems like easy way in At least from the outside In my opinion However, the truth is found that This job is equally as difficult as anything That would be in version of the product It's just perceived as Oh, you don't have to do the education You don't have to study anything It's just raw That's part of it And I think that's why so many young students Are trying to apply as a concept art Even though they know very little About what the job there is So let's talk about that What exactly is it? And it's confusing Sometimes I really need to I think This gives up Instead of applying Who know very little Concept art Think Oh, that's what you do It's just draw and stuff all day You paint a character Action scenes and all that And really That's not what you do in the job That has to do with sometimes Marketing art Or art books That mix a bunch of stuff together And I'm going to go over that later In the part 2 What you actually do But But It has to do with I like to use analogies of cars Okay Crazy like that And you want to go buy some sports car My guess is The sports car This person want to buy It's going to be probably Ferrari Lamborghini Maybe a Bugatti But probably something like Ferrari Lamborghini Very high chance Everyone of those 2 brands Now Does this person know anything about the car? Probably no But do they care? No Why do they buy the car? Because it's expensive It's very flashy And so you have money But in terms of knowing history The buyer doesn't have to care They don't even know where every Ferrari are made You know They don't think they care All they know is It's freaking nice looking It's sexy And cost a crap load of money And most people cannot afford this car So therefore When I drive the car Everyone knows I have money And that's what That's their purpose In terms of why they buy this car Totally fine Totally legit No problem there
