Good afternoon, it's one o'clock, I'm Tim Connolly and this is Leeds Hacks Radio News. NHS England are campaigning to get Winter Strong to remind those at risk to get vaccinated. This follows after 18,000 flu-related deaths were recorded over the past two years. Practice nurse Lindsay Perrin explains. People are generally in worse health than they ever were before. There's a legacy from COVID, long COVID, people have more chronic disease now. We put on lots of clinics for patients to come and be able to access the flu vaccine easily. A Witch report has found that Yorkshire has the worst bank access in the country. Nine constituencies in Yorkshire are without a single banking branch, meaning more people are having to switch to online banking. Dr Karen Horwood, a town planning lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, explained why it's tough for town planners to get physical banks onto the high street. The planning system can allocate certain places for certain uses and can try and drive a particular use of a place, but they can't determine exactly what business sets up in that location. Today is World Vegetarian Day, where thousands of people are celebrating making healthier lifestyle choices. The people behind the event claim that having a vegetarian diet will lower cholesterol, preventing heart disease and even reduce cancer rates. As well as this, the celebration promotes ending animal cruelty and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The annual event has taken place for almost 50 years as they urge people to try vegetarianism for just a day. Revive Reuse, a company committed to reselling pre-loved items at budget-friendly prices, has launched its third location in Leeds. The company chose to expand further after Hunsfoot residents requested a reuse shop in their community. Working in partnership with charities like Slate and St Vincent de Paul, Revive aim to combat poverty whilst protecting the environment. Mags Ashman is a volunteer and training coordinator at Revive. She hopes that initiatives like this will help to reduce waste. We're making essential items affordable, such as clothing, furniture, electricals, bedding, home products, that kind of thing. So the goal is to encourage more and more people to embrace the circular economy. Rather than chucking things away, just encourage people to reuse. And then when they're not using them anymore, take it back for reuse, if it's reusable or recycling. It's National Green Cities Day and Leeds City Council has put together a list of objectives to become more sustainable. Five targets have been highlighted which the people of Leeds could try and actively follow today so we can all work towards a greener future. The list includes a waste not want not, eat nutritious foods that are good for the planet, find new ways to produce, sell and serve food, supporting our local farmers and buying food sustainably. Another effort to combat this in the city was to plant 1,200 trees near the A1 to act as a barrier to the emissions from the road. The University of Leeds are currently tracking the air quality changes since these have been planted and hope for a more sustainable city. Yorkshire County Cricket Clubs say they are confident they can make an impact on their return to Division 1 of the County Championship. The club boasted the highest number of bonus points in the country as well as a convincing win over Division 2 champion Sussex. With Division 1 cricket on the horizon, commentator Jonathan Doidge gives his thoughts on what promotion means for the club. They've won a championship three times. Yorkshire sort of is championship cricket if you like and championship cricket is Yorkshire because of that proud history so it means the world I think to the club.
