Leeds MPs approve blue plaque honoring those who stopped a far-right rally. Obesity rates among primary school children are increasing due to the high cost of healthy food. Extreme weather conditions are causing floods and financial struggles for farmers in Yorkshire. The new Whitecloth Hall in Leeds is thriving after its first month. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe play is coming to Leeds next month, teaching children valuable life lessons. From the Leeds Hacks Radio Newsroom, this is Brick Radio News. Good afternoon, it's 12.30, I'm Jacob Greppage and this is the Leeds Hacks Radio News. Leeds MPs have been given their verdicts on a new blue plaque installed commemorating the anti-fascist history in the city. The plaque honours the 30,000 Leeds residents who prevented the far-right leader Sir Oswald Moseley from holding a rally in South Leeds. Richard Bergen, MP for Leeds East, said that residents could reflect on the lessons learnt back in 1936. I think what was also really important is we reflected upon the lessons to today, that we need to turn out, we need to have mobilisations against the far-right, that's what we saw in the summer. Rate of obesity amongst primary school children is on the rise. In 2022, it was estimated that 160 million children were living with obesity. Leeds-based nurse Natalie Millard said that the rise could be linked to the increased cost of food. I have a lot of patients that come in, I work in one of the most deprived parts of Leeds, and a lot of my patients, when I ask, when I do their health reviews for themselves, most of them will say they can't afford to eat healthy meals, good food, quality food. Farmers across Yorkshire have been struggling to stay positive during extreme weather conditions, which has left farms in floods. A lack of profit has left farmers with a tough decision. School farmer Jill Brown spoke out on the current issues farmers are facing. Yes, there's been a real increase in extreme weather cases across the UK, but we've also seen effects in the Yorkshire area as well. There's also been a high increase in high quality food amounts, which has put a real strain on lots of farmers, and lots of farmers are leaving the industry altogether. The newest and largest ale hall in Leeds is going strong after its first month open. Located behind the Corn Exchange, boasting four separate food vendors, two bars, and a vast range of drinks, Whitecloth Hall might be the next big thing. Staff spoke about what they found interesting about working at a venue of this size. In the past I've worked in a restaurant, I've only had one set team, but Whitecloth Hall The original West End coast of the Lion, the Witch and the Water had visited Leeds this week. It was all part of the 75th anniversary of the booth by C.S. Lewis. Director Pip Minnickle said that they can't wait for the show to come to Leeds next month. It's a story of children who flee the Blitz in London and move to Scotland without their family, and in this strange house in Scotland they discover a wardrobe that can take them to a fantasy land. And it's a story where I think the children learn a lot about their lives back in the real world from their adventures in Narnia. You are listening to Leeds Arch Radio News, I'm Jacob Grettage.
