The podcast discusses the integration of arts and technology in elementary schools. The hosts mention the essential standards for creative and critical thinking skills in artistic expression. They also talk about using personal experiences as sources for creating art and the use of technology tools to reinforce classroom concepts. They define art integration as teaching and assessing lessons through art concepts and technology integration as the ability to use technology in the classroom. They provide examples of how they have incorporated art and technology in their teaching experiences. They mention the benefits and challenges of integrating art and technology and how it can benefit different learning styles. The hosts conclude by discussing the real-life examples they have shared and the connections they have made for teachers. Welcome to today's podcast of Engaging the Arts Through Innovation. I'm Ashlyn. I'm Kelly. And we're going to talk about some curriculum content, better known as standards, that you would go through as if you were the teacher. Those teachers out there just listening to this today, we kind of use the essential standard to apply creative and critical thinking skills to artistic expression. And we also chose that clarifying objective to be creative art through a process that includes generating ideas and planning solutions and producing original art. Another standard that we chose was the essential standard was apply creative thinking skills again. But we clarified that objective with use the personal point of view and experiences as sources for creating art. The last standard we chose to fit in with that innovation, which was technology, was the standard of the use of technology tools and skills to reinforce classroom concepts and activities. We backed that up with that clarifying object of use a variety of technology tools to organize data and information. That could be things such as a word processor, a graphic organizer, audio and visual recording, such as we're doing right now, online collaboration tools, et cetera. We want to go ahead and do our theory and our practice. Today our whole podcast is defining art and technology integration in elementary schools. We want to specifically focus on third grade teachers, but this does not mean that this is just for third grade teachers, this is for teachers overall, whoever is out there listening. Okay, Ashlyn, can you tell me a little bit about art integration? So, art integration is when the teachers give lessons that are taught and assessed through nationally aligned art concepts, which allows students opportunities to construct and demonstrate their various art forms. Now, Kaylee, I want you to know a little bit more about technology integration. Okay, yes. Technology integration is when having the ability to perform or understand the idea of technology in the classroom. This can be performed by any teacher, as well as an easier way to instruct in the classroom alongside helping with the children that are K-12, have a better idea about the usage of technology and why it is even important. Now, Kaylee, I do want to give you a brief example of something that I have seen. I was able to teach an art lesson and the next unit that my teacher was going into was the Roman Empire unit. I was able to instruct that lesson and instruct it to a class on making shields, just as the Romans did. In this situation, I used technology because I was able to use Google Class and incorporate the idea of art. Is that kind of how technology integration works? Yes, there can be challenges and benefits to technology and art integration. They're both beneficial, but also there's been challenges that come along with this. It is a way of coming up with creative ideas to propose information to your classroom, as well as activities for the kids, and that's where the art integration comes into play. The use of both of these can benefit learning styles, slash, situations, as well as incorporating the use of technology overall. Now, something that we kind of discussed before even starting our podcast was basically the whole definition of arts and technology integration put together as one. We both gave real-life examples. Mine was in the classroom, and Kaylee's, I believe, what was yours again? Mine was also in the classroom when it came to, I went to go see the art class at my field experience, and she had incorporated technology in with her art lesson that day. So, we were able to basically go together and perform these art and technology integrations in the classroom through our field experiences, as well as mine going through tutoring lessons and all that. We were able to provide personal experiences and make real-world connections for teachers overall. Is there any other examples that you would like to give Kaylee before we kind of move on to the next episode? So far, at my field experience, I haven't really seen any challenges being used with the technology integration in the classrooms, but I've seen a bunch of benefits as for the teachers being able to pull that up and show examples for the kids using that technology, which was an easier way to help them get a better understanding of what to do for their assignment in the classroom. Right. Now, something that I thought was cool with Google Fives was if I made a set of Google Fives and I emailed them to you, Kaylee, no matter what I changed on those Google Fives, whatever email they were sending the first time with that link, those changes would still be made each time you clicked that link, where on a PowerPoint, you cannot do that. So I thought that was one way that technology integration was able to be able to perform. All right. And that is all we have for episode one.
