Hi ladies and welcome to the AmazingBible.book club I'm Julie Calio your host and thanks for taking time out of your busy schedules to tune in with me today if by chance you want to contact me you can do that at theab.bc.pc at gmail.com today we are covering chapter two of first Kings with Psalm 72 and 19 David is now old in years and close to death in chapter one David's oldest living son decided he would be the next king of Israel and he gathered important men to make it happen such as Joab David's commander and Abiathar the priest both of which had been with David for a long time David's firstborn son was killed by his third born son because Amnon had raped Absalom's sister Tamar the second born probably died young because he's not mentioned much and Absalom the third born tried to take the kingdom from David he conquered Jerusalem when David and his family fled and slept with David's concubines on the roof of David's palace to show all Israel that he had now become king yet the battle was not over Joab killed him and the fighting stopped David came back to Jerusalem and reigned until he was about 70 years old his body was always cold even with blankets so his servants got a beautiful young Shunammite woman to lay with David and keep him warm as well as tend to his needs this is now the perfect time for Adonijah to act when Nathan the prophet heard about the coup he went to Bathsheba with a plan she was to go to the king first and tell him what Adonijah was doing then when talking with the king Nathan would come and tell the king what was happening in this instance David acted swiftly he called for Benaiah his warrior Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet they took Solomon anointed him as king placed him on the king's mule and rode up to Jerusalem where Solomon took King David's throne this brought fear to Adonijah and all who were with him Solomon told Adonijah that if he was worthy he would live but if evil he would die then Solomon sent him home chapter 2 verses 1 through 4 when the time drew near for David to die he gave a charge to Solomon his son I'm about to go the way of all the earth so be strong show yourself a man and observe what the Lord your God requires walk in his ways and keep his decrees and commands his laws and requirements as written in the law of Moses so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go and that the Lord may keep his promise to me if your descendants watch how they live and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel David knew when one follows the ways of the Lord he is blessed and as a king then the nation too would be blessed then David addressed issues with various people from his kingdom for Solomon to know about the first was Joab David's commander of the army when David was just the king of Judah Abner the commander of Israel's army had made a pact to make David king over all Israel but Joab killed him because Abner had killed Joab's brother in battle but David had no part in that killing 2nd Samuel chapter 3 then Joab killed David's son Absalom even though the king had asked the men to spare his life during the battle of the kingdom plus he rebuked the king for mourning his son and not respecting his own men who fought for David's life 2nd Samuel chapter 18 since David was mad at Joab for killing his son the king made Absalom's commander Amasa his commander in order to try to bring the kingdom together but Joab would have no part of that and he killed him again David had no part in that killing either David told king Solomon in verse 6 deal with him according to your wisdom but do not let his gray head go down to the grave in peace the next man David wanted Solomon to remember was Barzillai of Gilead because when David ran for his life from his son Absalom Barzillai provided for the king Shammai a descendant of Saul on the other hand had cursed the king when David had to flee Jerusalem but when he came back into Jerusalem he pleaded for mercy in verse 9 David tells Solomon but now do not consider him innocent you are a man of wisdom you will know what to do to him bring his gray head down to the grave in blood in verse 10 then David rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of David he had reigned 40 years over Israel 7 years in Hebron and 33 in Jerusalem so Solomon sat on the throne of his father David and his rule was firmly established Psalm 72 has the title of Solomon one thing about Hebrew is that one word has many meanings so this as with all the ones that had David's name attached to it could mean for Solomon or about Solomon or by Solomon the last verse of this psalm says this concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse so it seems that it was written by David about or for Solomon and it goes like this endow the king with your justice O God the royal son with your righteousness he will judge your people in righteousness your afflicted ones with justice the mountains will bring prosperity to the people the hills the fruit of righteousness he will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy he will crush the oppressor he will endure as long as the sun as long as the moon through all generations he will be like rain falling on a mowed field like showers watering the earth in his days the righteous will flourish prosperity will abound till the moon is no more he will rule from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth the desert tribes will bow before him and his enemies will lick the dust the king of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him the kings of Sheba and Seba will present him gifts all kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him for he will deliver the needy who cry out the afflicted who have no one to help he will take pity on the weak and the needy and save the needy from death he will rescue them from oppression and violence for precious is their blood in his sight long may he live may gold from Sheba be given him may people ever pray for him and bless him all day long let grain abound throughout the land on the tops of the hills may it sway let its fruit flourish like Lebanon let it thrive like the grass of the field may his name endure forever may it continue as long as the sun all nations will be blessed through him and they will call him blessed praise be to the lord god the god of Israel who alone does marvelous deeds praise be to his glorious name forever may the whole earth be filled with his glory amen and amen this concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse this also ends book two of the psalms just a note each of the five books of the psalms ends with praise also the river mentioned in this psalm is the Euphrates which I may have said in other lessons that David took this northern land but closer look at my bible map it was really through Solomon's leadership that Israel's land went all the way up to it or as my atlas of the bible lands describes it quote territory in the far north under economic influence of Solomon now that David is dead Adonijah Solomon's oldest brother who tried to take the kingdom came to Bathsheba Solomon's mother in verse 15 he said as you know the kingdom was mine all Israel looked to me as their king but things changed and the kingdom has gone to my brother for it has come to him from the lord interesting he acknowledged that Solomon received the kingdom because the lord gave it to him yet he acknowledged that the kingdom was his yet the lord obviously did not give it to him ever instead he tried to take it plus not everyone looked to him as king or Solomon would not have been king so he is not living in truth he asked Bathsheba to go to Solomon and ask for Abishag the Shunammite to be his wife this is very similar to when Absalom slept with David's concubines on the roof of the palace Adonijah is still trying to be king she went to Solomon and put in the request now in chapter one after Nathan came to Bathsheba to have her go to the king with the news of Adonijah verse 15 reads so Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him I would assume that this is the same room where king David took her I wonder what emotions were going on in her head as she saw this aged king who had her husband killed and now this beautiful woman was tending to his needs not one of his many wives I wonder if she made the request for Adonijah to get Abishag the Shunammite out of the palace when king Solomon heard the request he knew instantly that this was a ploy for Abishag to take the kingdom this infuriated him and he declared may God deal with me be it ever so severely if Adonijah does not pay for his life for this request verse 23 this started the cleaning of the old house king Solomon ordered Benaiah his commander to kill Adonijah since Abiathar was a priest and took care of the ark and because he had served David faithfully most of his life Solomon allowed him to live but he was removed from the priesthood of the Lord and then verse 27b says thus fulfilling the word of the Lord had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli this is found in first Samuel chapter 2 when Joab heard the news he ran to the altar and clung to the horns he refused to move and Solomon gave orders to Benaiah to kill him where he was for Shammai the orders were as long as he stayed in Jerusalem he would live but if he ever left he would be killed short story he left and died chapter 2 ends the kingdom was now firmly established in Solomon's hands I'd like to end with psalm 19 a psalm of David for the director of music it is a psalm of praise but it also praises the word of the Lord which the king needs the heavens declare the glory of God the skies proclaim the work of his hands day after day they pour forth speech night after night they display knowledge there is no speech or language where their voice is not heard their voice goes out into all the earth their words to the ends of the world in the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion like a champion rejoicing to run his course it rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other nothing is hidden from its heat the law of the Lord is perfect reviving the soul the statutes of the Lord are trustworthy making wise the simple the precepts of the Lord are right giving joy to the heart the commands of the Lord are radiant giving light to the eyes the fear of the Lord is pure enduring forever the ordinances of the Lord are sure and altogether righteous they are more precious than gold than much pure gold they are sweeter than honey than honey from the comb by them is your servant warned in keeping them there is great reward who can discern his errors forgive my hidden faults keep your servant also from willful sins may they not rule over me then will I be blameless innocent of great transgression may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight oh Lord my rock and my redeemer just last week we had a solar eclipse I was not in the line of totality but it got darker and I ran out to peak what amazed me was the glow in the sky around the eclipse it did not dawn on me until I watched the news how amazingly God created our universe and as I learned even though the moon is 400 times smaller than the sun it is also about 400 times closer to earth than the sun which is why they appear to be the same size for a moment we as a people were in awe the heavens declare the glory of God and so does his laws because they describe who he is and he is amazing ladies if you have heard his voice today please don't harden your heart like Davidson Adonijah instead let's be women who see his creation hear his voice read his word and obey until next time and thanks so very very much for listening
