Two college freshmen discuss how they manage their time and stress for academic success. They share tips like creating a schedule, learning to say no, and prioritizing tasks based on credit hours. They also talk about de-stressing through napping, cleaning, and listening to music. They discuss distractions, particularly the phone, and strategies to overcome them. They both acknowledge the need for improvement and plan to implement tips from articles they've read. Overall, they emphasize the importance of discipline and focus for academic success. Hi guys, my name is Damarion, I'm a freshman at UW-Madison and my major is kinesiology. And I'm Jordan, I'm a freshman at UW-Madison and I'm majoring in biology. Welcome to the Daily J&D Podcast. The theme for today's episode is how do college students manage their time and stress to work towards academic success. And we're going to be talking about this today because we're almost done with our first semester of college and it was a big adjustment but we found ways to manage our stress and time even if they weren't the best ways but we're still learning to. And we'll be asking each other questions back and forth kind of like a conversation, just a normal conversation between two college students. Alright so what are your tips to being able to manage your time? My tips to being able to manage my time is I like to write down a schedule before my day so I know what I'm getting into so I'm not going into the day just without a plan. I feel like this helps with assignments and just any other thing like I write down when I'm going to the gym. It just helps me plan out my day very well. I also got some tips from a website called Slack and the title of their article was 10 Tips for Mastering Time Management at Work and they recommended to learn when to say no and I took this as just learn when to be disciplined when your friends are asking you do you want to go out. You just have to say no sometimes and prioritize your work. Have you done that sometimes where you've said yes and then fallen behind on your work? Yeah I've done that too many times this semester but it's all a part of the learning process so I plan on changing that in the future. A question I have for you Jordan is how do you de-stress after a long day? Usually I have to get back from my classes. I'll like take a nap for a while and then like shower, clean up the room and then I'll start working on stuff but like while I'm doing homework I always listen to music. That helps. And then I read an article Stress Management How to Reduce and Relieve Stress and they suggested to think of the four A's which is to avoid unnecessary stress, alter the situation if you can't change it, adapt to the stressor or accept the things that you can't change because sometimes you just never, well you aren't ever going to get rid of all the stress in your life completely. Alright second question for you how do you prioritize certain tasks over others? I prioritize my tasks depending on like how many credits there are in the class so for example Spanish class is four credits and that's like my highest demanding class so I prioritize my work in that class as opposed to like the one credit classes that I have because I know like the four credit class will affect my GPA more than a one credit class so I aim to get a very high grade in my higher credit classes. Yeah that makes sense. The second question I have for you Jordan is what distracts you the most from doing your homework and assignments? My biggest distraction is definitely my phone because when it's just sitting on the desk next to me while I'm trying to work on assignments I'm constantly looking at it or I just tell myself I'm going to take like a five minute break and then it ends up being like an hour so yeah that's definitely a big distraction. Do you have any plans or have you tried anything to stop that distraction? Yeah I've been trying to put my phone like across the room for a while so then I like don't look at it and then that'll just also help me manage my time better because I'm not wasting hours sitting at my phone and yeah an article I read called College Students Time Management and a Self-Regulated Learning Perspective they just talked about all the benefits of managing your time in college like as you would expect when you spend more time studying you have an increased academic performance. Nice, I like that. So what takeaways did you get from today's podcast Jordan? I always thought I was pretty good at managing like stress and time but like when you talk about it and really think about it like I need to have a bunch of improvements which after reading articles I do think I will start using some of those tips and trying to improve just so my academics will be even better. What takeaways did you get? My main takeaway was from the article that I got that I read and it was just like to learn to be disciplined and saying no when I have to and also like the takeaway of like just the all the distractions just like being focused and like whether it's putting your phone to the side or I don't know turning the TV off if you have a TV in your room just staying focused on your work. So those are my main takeaways from the podcast. Alright, well that's all we have today, thanks for tuning in.
